Meet 71-year-old Ismail Galant better known as ‘The Voice’, born in a vibrant area called Claremont, in Cape Town, SOUTH AFRICA.
The mother city of Cape Town is known for its beautiful and unique culture, history, and traditions, preserved by those before us. The Nederlands Lied is a unique type of singing, it is the main item in the Cape Malay Annual Choral Competitions and can only be heard in Cape Town.
Our Cape Malay ‘JAWWAP!’ crew was afforded the opportunity to sit down with a living legend, for an exclusive and detailed interview in which he ‘karienkils-it-up’ and recollects precious memories around his upbringing; and more importantly, the understanding and love for the Nederlands Lied, his 45+ years in Cape Malay Choirs, his thoughts of his beloved family and supporters; traveling experiences and shares classic stories about how things have changed with the times and more!
Ismail had a winning streak for several years, from the tender age of 16 & sang classic Nederlands songs such as ‘Vriende kom luister’, ‘Ag Rosa Lem’, ‘Oraal’ ‘Ewaglustig’ and many more. He was also a Soloist, Coach, Comic Singer, and later an Adjudicator. ‘The Voice’ also mentions his ongoing treatment of Dialysis.

The raw and untold stories depicted here were inspired by our Galant and Diedericks Families, formerly from Claremont and District Six in Cape Town, SOUTH AFRICA; by our self-published and best seller book: Imam Haron’s BILAL ”Let them hear, let them listen!” (where we have encapsulated our father's memories of the 1960s, Hajji Abduraghmaan 'Pinkie' Galant, a student of the Anti-apartheid icon, the late Imam Abdullah Haron who was incarcerated for 123 days without charge and in isolation, he was brutally tortured and killed in September of 1969, written in true Cape Malay style, by Fatima Galant Abrahams, with supporting footnotes and a glossary to better explain to the reader);
as well as by our Madrassatu-Sobiereen,
our Pinkie’s CHOW Community Food Drives,
our rich culture, history, and traditions preserved by our forefathers.
Despite everything they have gone through in the past, a joyous spirit remains.
