I met Gazza today on the street in Bournemouth listening to a busker . He looked so at peace with himself. I couldn't help but go and speak to him and tell him what a legend he was to people of my generation. He was an absolute gentleman and I had my photo taken with him - then he asked me " Lend me a fiver mate to give to that busker"...Like an idiot I put my hand in my pocket to give him the fiver then that wide grin came on his face - he was joking. Gazza if you ever read this Cheers mate...Not often you can say this to another man but I love ya mate...and thanks for making a 50 year old a very happy man today.
Off the pitch, a tortured and sad soul which he's fought but often defeats him. On the pitch he was free, burst of pace and he went past people for fun, hard to shake off the ball, skillful, strong, creative, sublime at times and scored the most wonderful goals. He was unique, the best attacking midfielder England produced and if it wasn't for his injury who knows. He outclassed, outplayed and played with passion to boot. He was a truly gifted footballer who grabbed everyone's attention because you knew you were going to be entertained. You can throw in some names before and after but he was on a different level.
I totally agree except for the part about tortured and sad. He was the polar opposite an extrovert, loving, friendly happy go lucky soul of the party who was brimful of passion and expression, always smiling no matter what life threw at him and was great with everyone for the most part. Yeah he had his demons sure, and im sure hes doing the utmost not to let it get him down. Its testament to how many people love him, and how much of a joy this playful perhaps emotional sentimental sensitive character gave to many of us. Most of the other people just hide it better, but he was transparent thats why we love him.
One of our greatest ever players, we don't have anyone like that now. There will never again be any footballer with a character like that, not for England anyway. Such a great lad.
True legend, one of the best I've ever seen...Wish Gazza gets out of this hole. We lost a great player for alcohol as well in Brazil: Socrates. And Adriano seems to be following the same path...
I was 8 when i was watching on TV the english euro 96. Im from Poland, but couz my team was not in the finals i was suporting english team. Mostly (if not only) becouz of Gascoigne. I loved the way he played, and the emotions he had. Im so sad he wasted his talent... In the semifinal i was crying with him.
just the little you see in this video is enough to say this dude was something special and to have come from England, they must have enjoyed watching and supporting that kind of football. Their current crop need to step up. This dude's style of play is pretty unique i mean his goals look like he had Moses Staff parting the red sea. Would have been great to see that from a England player. I feel maybe the new crop are so talented as individuals but just need the confidence to be themselves on the pitch and not worry about what the papers are gonna say (good or bad) the next day. Just do your thing. #nopressure
The great thing about Gazza was the excitement of not knowing what he was going to do, but knowing that it would be very entertaining. One of the game's great characters and a truly brilliant footballer, which is too often forgotten amidst the silliness.
Geneous !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Gazzaaaa........I love you. Am an indian fan. 1990 -fifa WC.. could have been englads. Germans won only b'cuse of luck.. Best english team ever. 1990.Gaza,D.Platt,Linekar...Gazzaa rolling with the ball..Platt's headers sometimes goals post will burst... Linekar speed..amazing ..era..its been 22 years..Am indian from india.. I admire Gaza.I want english team to win WC.. Please make it happen Lampard,Gerrad,Rooney etc..
I remember WC 1990. England was surprisingly playing good mainly because of him and David Platt and a small guy on the keft side named Parker. Damn, it's like yesterday, time flys...
I know that. I never took credit for making this video - I saw that it wasn't on RUclips anymore so I dug through my Hard Drive and just put it back up so that others could enjoy it.
Great player, and by a mile the best character in the game, shame we won't see the likes of him again I don't think, too much money in the game now, character gets iun d way of profit.
jon lynch THE ENGLAND TEAM HAVE NEVER HAD A PLAYER LIKE GAZZA , NO EVEN CLOSER TO HIS PASSION AND FOOTBALL, GERRARD,ROONEY, OWEN ETC YOU NAME IT, NONE OF THEM HAD THE CHARACTER AND PASSION FOR THE ENGLAND SHIRT.
True, they have a fear of failure, no spontaneity in their game anymore, its been horrific to watch since Euro 96, which was the first tournament I watched and remembered, such a shame, back then it seemed like we'd always be around, now it seems as tho we have more talented players throuout the squad, but the character isn't there. Whole new culture needed from grassroots up, play for love of the game.
Ya know when you grow up you really take for granted what you have. You look at the England team now, and ya think where is the passion and flare. Gazza was awesome in his day, gave his all, took risks, and just played like he loved the game. I honesty have not seen passion in an England Team in years. When you look at the England Team today compared to the team of Italia 90, there just looks like no spirit. Gazza took games by the scruff of the neck, and despite win or lose tried in style.
Gazza, if only you went to Man United under Sir Alex Ferguson and not Tottenham in 1988 from Newcastle. You truly would have been the Messi of English Football.
irGuilty Doubt it. My generation (I'm 27) idolize Gazza, and he'll never be forgotten. As for Rooney, on his day he;ll destroy teams, he's just played in a different way and not use as a CF.
irGuilty sorry mate but there's just no comparison. Not even close. Rooney is a good player, always has been, a competent striker with a decent record. Gascoigne at his peak was probably the best player in the world, he really was. I think this generation forget how talented Paul Gascoigne was because of his off field demons but as a footballer he would have walked into any team in the world especially at his peak. He's arguably the most gifted footballer England has ever produced. You should read what Bobby Robson said about him at World Cup 1990 and Lothar Matthaus. Gazza couldn't sleep so went down and started playing tennis at 10pm the night before the semi against Germany with some American guys, 2vs1 (as you do the night before a semi final). Robson flew outside and went ballistic and shouted at these two very confused yanks "Do you know who this man is, he's playing in a World Cup semi final tomorrow". The morning after Robson was fretting about how to deal with Lothar Matthaus and considered dropping Gascoigne despite him being the England star player of the tournament. Matthaus was widely considered the most complete central midfielder in the world at that time, briliant at both attack and defence and had basically been Germany's star man. He won several games for Germany on his own and in a lot of ways, carried his German colleagues. Most footballers and management considered Matthaus to be the best central midfielder in the world at that time. Robson wasn't sure if the manic 23 year old could handle the pressure (especially after his tennis stunt) of handling the best player in the world. Gazza had been tearing teams apart left right and centre but Robson needed him to focus on keeping Matthaus out of the game as much as bringing his wonderful skill and creativity to the game. He pulled Gazza over and said "Paul, I need to talk to you about Lothar Matthaus", before Robson could say any more, Gazza quickly interrupted "I've got it sorted boss", Robson replied "But Paul...", Gazza interrupted him again and said "Dont worry, I've got this one boss". Matthaus never got a kick in the entire game. Gazza was all over him like a rash. Matthaus had met his match and was unable to release his talent on the game. Gazza on the other hand, not only had Matthaus in his pocket, but was running the game single handedly. Everything England did well that game had come through Gascoigne. Matthaus has subsequently admitted on several occasions since that game, that he just couldn't get near the ball. Gazza was quicker, more determined, stronger and far more skilful. Gazza's performance was probably the greatest individual performance in an England shirt, despite the loss. Perhaps Beckham's against Greece is the closest but it's still a mile off. At the end of the tournament, both Matthaus and Gascoigne rightfully took their respective places at centre midfield of the FIFA World Cup Best 11, where they will be forever remembered as the two greatest central midfielders of that generation and probably the two best players of the tournament. However, when it came to it, Gascoigne vs Matthaus, there was only one winner, it was Gazza. I've heard that they've struck up a bit of a friendship out of mutual respect for each other. A class that we don't see often enough nowadays. If you want some light enjoyment, you should search for Gascoigne vs Matthaus on Google Images. The pictures tell the story.
irGuilty I think both are on same level. great unfilfilled potential. though Rooney been a top player longer (cos hes been more disciplined and luckier with injuries) and achieved much more. both should of been best win world. both could of got in any team at there best
i tell you something the name MESSI comes to mind....same as messi not much fancy tricks but speed and intricate footwork which allowed him to walk past defenders like they weren't even there!! ANYONE ELSE AGREE???
Will Waterman They're a different generation, but Messi has the protection of referees, top quality pitches, science and technology. Paul Gascoigne was still one of the old generation. Pre-technological football etc. I imagine if you put Gazza in modern football, he would have been even better. If you put Messi in football back then, he'd have struggled.
The memories god I remember this kid gazza came on the scene late 80s as a young lad for Newcastle he was brilliant talent, he could have gone to man united but chose spurs wow how he must of regret that move no disrespect to spurs but compared to man united spurs are nothing
Mark Pritchard at that time, Spurs was a sound decision... Man Utd was rebuilding under Fergie and the outcome of that was not known yet! But looking back, it would have been some story if he was part of that rebuilding at manchester.
Gazza was without doubt the best player in the world from 1988-1990. You know, it's true that he never fulfilled his potential, but then again, for all Wayne Rooney or Ryan Giggs have won, they've never reached that sort of "zinedine zidane", "Pele", "Maradona", "Messi" pinacle in world football
probably the best english player ive ever seen. Proves that you cant count medals a player has to prove his quality. Gazza has never won anything major but ill take him over a player like scholes any day
Gazza was a lot faster than given credit for .Sure he didnt have the lighting pace of Ronaldo or Messi but he was pretty damn fast. But the injury in the FA Cup final robbed him of his pace.
Whatever he did off the field, few midfielders in the history of the game have been able to play the game like him. Was probably the most gifted player on the planet for about 5 years after Maradonna and before Ronaldo. Was always only half-fit yet he went head-to-head with Gullit and Mattheus, the consensus 2 best players in the world, and he made them look like bums. He made everyone look like a bum. Against the best int he world it was like a grown man playing against his kids in the garden.
I have to agree with the guy. Wilshire is no where near Gazza's level but they are similar and he has that kind of deceptive burst of pace and dribbling skills similar to Gazza. For me Gazza is the greatest since Bobby Charlton if only he hadn't done his knee in he'd of been one of the best in the world.
his is what this guys said " Nautilus1972 An alcoholic has nobody to blame but themselves. Just read his book. He really is daft as a brush and never grew up mentally." NAUTILUS 1972, GAZZA AS ENGLISH PEOPLE CALL HIM IS THE REPRESENTATION OF FOOTBALL, HIS ALCOHOL IS ONE THING BUT FOOTBAL WAS BEAUTIFUL WHEN HE PLAYED, EVERY GAME FELT LIKE THERE WAS A CHANCE TO WIN and as a fan you want that the chance to win, so please don't tell me about a book and alcohol, respect the MAN who had a problem and let us close our eyes and picture the greatest football player in England. Paul Gascoigne
If He hadn't Had That Injury when he had that Great Season after World Cup 90 it could have been all so different Mid 20s is where Players usually hit their Peak He Wasn't the Same after and Only Did Ok at Lazio, At Rangers He Did well but The Scottish League isn't as Tough a League, After that it was just trying to prolong his Career as Long as he Could!
Obviously he may never be as good as Gazza, who was absolutely breathtaking, but give Wilshere a few more years and he'll be very similar. In terms of dribbling he's probably the best England has.
I disagree. His football at Boro and Everton, despite his clear issues with alcoholism, was some of his best. He was care free, pressure free etc. I mean, obviously at Newcastle and Spurs he was on fire. Rangers got the tail end of his physical peak. Arguably it was his move to Spurs that really caused his issues though. Venables just let them all have a piss up every night. I'm not saying that Venables is to blame, but Gazza needed someone hands on, who would bollock him and keep him in line.
Was always curious as to what England would have been like if Gascoigne, Le Tissier, Collymore, Barnes, Waddle, Rocastle and even Ian Wright had all been together on the same pitch, with all of them putting in their best performance.
So I don't really remember gazza that well, i was born in '91...but the guy looks fantastic: close control , dribbling ; attributes you'd associate with other top European players. To the fanboy below don't compare him to Messi though that is just daft, no one can be compared to him with Maradona being the exception
the greatest english player of all time ! sad short career, women, drugs and booze, otherwise a MESSI before messi had existed.. miss gazzas magic ! best ever goal was the one against scotland followed by that freekick at wembley against arsenal

If Messi had scored some of these goals and they were scored in the internet age, we would be hearing about it for months. Great player.
quality player, never heard or seen much of him before but starting to regard him as a top player or at least one that had the potential to be so
Best england player ever, one of the best players ever, pure legend

True legend, one of the best I've ever seen...Wish Gazza gets out of this hole. We lost a great player for alcohol as well in Brazil: Socrates. And Adriano seems to be following the same path...
Great player, great music.
An absolute genius - loved watching him at Rangers.
If he'd signed for Man U and had some control in his life he would have been the best player ever.

he had it all...
WE LL NEVER SEE A PLAYER LIKE GAZZA WEARING THE ENGLAND SHIRT AGAIN NOBODY LIKE HIM HIS PASSION CHARACTER AND FOOTBALL ARE VERY MISSED.
He drinks, he smokes, he never gave a fuck and only used half of his talent; yet he's still better than any other english midfielders out today.
Genius.
great compilation. well done
I remember WC 1990. England was surprisingly playing good mainly because of him and David Platt and a small guy on the keft side named Parker. Damn, it's like yesterday, time flys...
This charming man by the smiths as well😀👍👌
what a legend... hope you get better Paul
The best player of his generation, and to think that he never met his full potential... crazy!
I know that. I never took credit for making this video - I saw that it wasn't on RUclips anymore so I dug through my Hard Drive and just put it back up so that others could enjoy it.

OMG, Paul's brill

perfect song for mr. gazza :)))
A thick pissed up Geordie, and one of the greatest players this country has ever produced.
gazza was the man ma fav rangers player ever
0:05 making the great Ronald Koeman look stupid...not many people do that.
Gascoigne made a lot of people look stupid, the majority of people who tried to tackle him.
Great player, and by a mile the best character in the game, shame we won't see the likes of him again I don't think, too much money in the game now, character gets iun d way of profit.
100 per cent agree.

you right they arent footballers anymore they became models, singers, etc Beckham brought that shit to the game.
Played for my team, Rangers, best player I've ever seen.
Even as a dane I just love gascoigne!! he maradonna and laudrup make football worth watching

my 2 favourite things in the world....
the smiths and spurs...
well done.... coys
As a frenchie I would have love to see King Cantona in the same team than Mr Gascogne. 2 fantastic players with a fantastic temper.
Gazza, if only you went to Man United under Sir Alex Ferguson and not Tottenham in 1988 from Newcastle. You truly would have been the Messi of English Football.
i've heard the name of course but i didn't know him very well, i haven't seen any video, i think, now that i did i can say this man was a genious, wow
Easily the best English player I have seen. Could take a game over all by himself....
Definitely but people will only appreciate wayne Rooney when he retires.

Wazza never near gazza...I'm United Fan...
Really well-done vid.
i tell you something the name MESSI comes to mind....same as messi not much fancy tricks but speed and intricate footwork which allowed him to walk past defenders like they weren't even there!! ANYONE ELSE AGREE???
John Barnes was very technically good as well. Rare to find technically gifted English players. I think Sterling can be as good.
Gascoigne was better than Messi.
I'm sorry, but Gazza was nowhere near Messi's level. He was one of the greatest this country has had, but Messi is the best ever
Will Waterman They're a different generation, but Messi has the protection of referees, top quality pitches, science and technology. Paul Gascoigne was still one of the old generation. Pre-technological football etc.

InvisibleYetVisible Messi is levels above Gascoigne.
Awesome.
Zidane has been quoted as saying that Gazza was one of his favorite players growing up.
this video shows why paul got so much media attention--- he was a footballing genius---
get well soon gazza

Paul Gascoigne IDOLO!
Was always curious as to what England would have been like if Gascoigne, Le Tissier, Collymore, Barnes, Waddle, Rocastle and even Ian Wright had all been together on the same pitch, with all of them putting in their best performance.
And Scholes And Rooney.
English's most talented player...of all time.
So I don't really remember gazza that well, i was born in '91...but the guy looks fantastic: close control , dribbling ; attributes you'd associate with other top European players.
To the fanboy below don't compare him to Messi though that is just daft, no one can be compared to him with Maradona being the exception
the greatest english player of all time ! sad short career, women, drugs and booze, otherwise a MESSI before messi had existed.. miss gazzas magic ! best ever goal was the one against scotland followed by that freekick at wembley against arsenal
ye...a friendly man...man to man ..the moment the third one comes in he makes a fool out of you...(Winter, Aaron about Casgoine)
hard to believe - but apart from his skill he was as strong as an ox....
genius
