  • At annual Tesla AI Day event , Tesla CEO Elon Musk revealed the company's prototype robot meant to revolutionize their assembly line. The robot was only able to walk on stage and wave to the crowd. Then Elon and his team showed what they hoped for the production unit to look like once it’s ready.

      Yup.. nothing above and beyond. There is a big difference between just talk and being late. People don't appreciate how insanely complex some of these processes are and how difficult it is to get done at scale and at profit.
      The cyber truck hold up is due to the steel, which is vastly different from their existing cars. They need the time

      100 years? no man this is going to be heavly invested by companies who want to cut the costs. robots can be easily replaced by parts or whole. while people will be fired. because it costs more money to have humans around.
      Health care, dental care, eye care etc..
      vacations
      sick pay
      Court case scenarios like someone got hurt or something being bullied or mistreated.
      Bots will just do the job without talking back.

      @@TheMeanArena Don't think they're safe, these things can easily be made into killing machines. Check out the video where they do parkour, doing backflips and everything. I think they sold the mule one to the military tho, but not a 100% sure about that.

      People dont get that building the body is the easiest part, the brain is the main issue.
      there is a reason they are using FSD as a base, and not building a new system from scratch. it already collected data from the real world, from thousands of cars.

      Asimo could never scale and was a proof of concept. Budding robot companies now have precursors to work from speeding up development and Musk is good with mass scale production especially leaning on tech his companies already have.

    Seems like they're struggling to make it walk without falling, while Boston Dynamics have robots running around and doing parkour. It seems less like a new push for revolutionary AI and more like Tesla wanted to see if they could make their Tesla AI computers into full robots instead of cars. This seems like a prototype, not something you show off at a convention.

      BD robots fall all the time, the footage we always see is of those moments everything comes together. Additionally, BD has been at it for a very long time compared to the Tesla team who has only been at it for a mere fraction of the time. At the speed they're going, I anticipate crazy things in the near future. Plus they have their factories as actual test grounds for when they get there. This will only increase the development of the machine as it will see real world challenges and they are overcome.

      Boston dynamics doesn't use deep learning as far as I know. Just classic robotics algorithms for the motion. This robot does, which potentially makes it more flexible but also very complicated to put together. Honestly, just like for self-driving car, I'm not sure current AI tech can achieve this reliably. We're just not there yet.

      Ai have been integrating with us since 50s at least. We have been upgrading our cyborgs thru our phone systems for years.     anyone notice that in the robots view it showed the box being placed next to a sitting man, then in the real footage the man was standing up & to the side (not to mention the man was sitting down as the robot initially approached)

    Toyota and Honda have been cranking out robot iterations for years. The only thing compelling to me is the idea of testing humanoid forms with life support sensors for early Mars missions, and resuing parts easy-to-obtain/design/develop.

      Big difference between what the two companies are doing. Boston has a huge robot with hydraulics that’s many times more expensive, isn’t being designed for mass production and can’t work on its own at all. This is integrating a complete AI system that works on its own, uses motors and can be mass produced.

      Boston Dynamics have been working on their robots for decades, while this robot was built in only a couple of years. It's not so much about what the robot is capable of yet, but more showing how far they've come in such a short time. Give it a couple of years and they'll have caught up to BD, then the competition will really begin.

    10:25 I love Tesla but I beg you to use FK (Forward Kinematics) in the training stack.
    Animation emulation is helpful to use IK but actual humans are always generating motion from the top joint down the stack or something closer to FK (Forward Kinematics)

      Vive trackers are pretty much the cheapest accurate mocap solution you can get. There isn't much of a reason to use anything else. Disney used them to track the cameras their screen sphere thing for they used to make the Mandalorian.

      Valve Index controllers are useful due to their finger tracking ability and outside-in tracking method. Its basically a mocap studio for ~1000$ if were talking full Valve Index kit, excluding Vive tracker pucks.

      Honda's Asimo was a tech demo aimed at the public.
      The exposed Tesla bot is an early development version from February aimed at recruiting engineers.
      That's why they showed the one with a covered body as that's the current version, they're iterating rapidly.

    I would say the more impressive thing about this robot isn't the hardware, but the amazing software being developed here, plenty of cutting edge AI tools (vision, navigation, control of actuators etc.) being developed and honed to real world application. The potential here is enormous.

      Yes, Elon gets it.. it's about usability and price. Once again, other companies are coming out with flashy tech demos, while Tesla creates something that is useful in just 6 months. Because this was made with an end use case and price in mind, by leveraging their AI/manufacturing and battery tech.
      If people don't see the direction this is going, then the competition probably won't either. Just like Tesla overtook GM and Ford when nobody thought they could, they're going to sail past any possible competition.

    What learning path would I take to get into this type of technology? I am currently going to school to be an electrical/computer engineer, but would it be better to go for computer science w/ A. I. Emphasis (Programmer)?

      A.I would be computer science. But the hardware is mechanical/electrical engineering. The machine vision will include optical engineering.
      I would focus on math, physics and computer science.

      what you see in the video requires inter-disciplinary knowledge to pull it off, but if your goal is to land a job where things like these are made, i would definitely suggested doing masters in any discipline that deals with robotics.

Other than the lack of fingers, it looked much more polished than Optimus. How come the one that copied from the Tesla end up with a better stage demo?
