Thanks! I'm just starting to learn how to identify trees and I liked how the video was short, got to the key points right away, and made them easy to remember. Something that would make it better would be to have a close-up side by side comparison of the leaves, so we can see them in the same frame without rewinding.

Been dropping and sawing trees 40 years in eastern virginia here and just put a 32 inch dead tree on the ground i was sure was a white oak from the shaggy bark but the wood is redder than regular red oaks,i mean red like cedar. never seen one like it,can't wait to get it on the saw mill it has very uniform growth rings and nice thick medulary rays,will quarter saw it.

I'm in California and wanted to know the difference because I bought red oak in Santa Maria for my smoker and wanted to see if the oak I have in the back yard is the same. I'm in the bay area and I go South twice a year and pick up red oak on my way back. That red oak is not cheap out there but it sure gives the meat a great scent and flavor. Thanks again!
Are you in Indiana. We recently bought a lot filled with tress. Some need to be cleared to build our home. We are looking for a sawmill that might be able to use the wood. We think they are vary old Oak trees. Any recommendations?
I am down and around Eastern Texas, the only trees I can confidently identify based on bark, leaves, and (I guess) seed pods (that's what I call them) is Sweet Gum and Sycamore, oh and Short Leaf Pine trees. Idk why they call it a short-leaf pine, they don't have leaves, they're called needles, but whatever.
In this instance there is no relation to why that beech tree is hinge cut next to a white oak. Tom had done some serious hinge cutting in his timber the previous year. He had a lot of young beech trees (little timber value) so he aggressively hinge cut them throughout his woods to help with cover and browse for deer and turkey. In other instances he girdled bigger ones that were potentially competing with more valuable trees (oaks)
The reason I came here is I bought a house. And I'm suddenly finding myself with a 100 yr old white oak tree on property and it is massive. It hasn't been neglected. But it needs a little bit removed from the canopy.

That slope must produce a lot of nice and variable mass, saw some Shagbark Hickory behind the White oak and an American Beech tree, nice forest!
