I have a Power Mac 7600, I have a G3 upgrade and adapter along with my 604 120 cpu. I got mine up to 60 but much beyond that is a no go. I wanted to go 66 mhz fsb.. no joy. That much I remember but at 330 mhz my 7600 absolutely screamed. Not very far behind a full blown G3 333. But of course not quite. I love your channel, not boring that's for sure.

Since making this video I actually picked up a 300MHz G3 card for cheap and decided to install it into my 8500. I loaded the thing up with just over 300MB RAM and also an SSD. I really like the 8500 form factor and decided to make it into a total powerhouse haha.

Very cool stuff. I still have a real affinity for the 4xxx-9xxx series Power Macs and Performas - grew up with a Performa 6400 as my family's main computer, was a great machine.

I have good memories of the 6400 as I used those in the AV lab at school with Avid video editing hardware. I want one eventually but no room at the moment.

Thanks for posting this! One of my childhood Macs was one of these PM 8500s! I don't have it anymore, which is sad, because I've been wanting to get one again to try and upgrade it to the max (RAM, HDD, CPU etc).. Maybe some day...

I absolutely love this tower design which is why I bought this one. I'm going to load it up with more RAM and VRAM and also toss in the PC compatibility card. If I find a cheap G3 card I might go that route but otherwise I'm happy with the 604.

Replacing the 40MHz for a 50MHz oscillator will do the same and is cheaper. Desoldering the original oscillator may be a bit tricky for some. If you want to go the full mile, you can locate the multiplikator resistors on the board and play around with them for a different multiplier. Back in the days i have modded a 180MHz board to 250MHz (4x45 -> 5x50). One 200MHz board could barely do 275MHz (4x50 -> 5x55) with a bit of additional cooling. Typically the CPUs have a lot of cooling with the stock aluminium block. Sometimes 60MHz bus clock will work stable in the PM8x00 and PM9x00 systems. Bumping a used 200MHz 604e to 250MHz would add around 50% of worth to the card. I had quite the success with that until the G3 came out.

It's tempting but I don't want to burn out the processor accidentally.

Hi Paul, I have a request. Is there any way you could play "A Day at Work", the old shareware Mac game, on your channel? I've been struggling to set up sheepshaver to play it (I'm young and never grew up with old computers, I have no idea what I'm doing). But there's no videos of this game anywhere, and I'm very curious about it, as the description makes it sound kind of like a poor man's Grand Theft Auto game, but I believe it was made by a teenager in his spare time. It's free on MyAbandonware and Mac Repository if you're interested. :)

Hey Paul, sweet video :D. Concerning what you said at 9:40, my guess would be is that it has to deal with silicon quality when comparing two identical processors. Like today, when I overclock, if I was to purchase two of the same processor I'm not guaranteed the same overclock. The manufacturer most likely knew this and provided reasonable frequency steppings so the user can experiment and find a clockspeed that is stable.

Yeah this is something I kind of read about at some point and a CPU's clock advertised clock speed is the "reliable" speed it was tested to function at whereas it varies how high it may actually run at. 0.5MHz steps seem a little excessive to me but I suppose back in the day if you were absolutely determined to run at maximum...
