    I am from Holland, isn’t that weird? So in Dutch, Geddy is saying thank you very much. De Slagwerker means The drummer, or the percussionist. I know you mentioned that you thought you reacted to this particular song before, but this is your first time checking out this version. As a slagwerker myself, I really appreciate this drum solo. Beyond the pieces of eight part, the solo is completely different than all of his prior ones. And I am confident you never heard a drum solo like this before. I know I never did. As for the DW kit, people did not like the sound of the kit on R30. This one sounds great! Also, I think he could hear that he definitely improved his swing as time went on. Chad Smith had mentioned in an interview and he had a very difficult time doing the Buddy Rich tribute as well, because swing is a completely different style of drumming then rock obviously.

    Regarding the fretless bass guitar, and this is purely a layman's perspective, but I would hazard a guess that Geddy did try to play it being faithful to the eccentricities of the fretless configuration, but that it just didn't match well with the rest of the music, so he called an audible and played it like a regular bass guitar while still paying homage to it, however brief. Then again, I could be wrong.

    • @JustinPanariello
      @JustinPanariello  Год назад +1

      according to the S&A documentary, Geddy wrote it by himself while he was tracking some other song (waiting on Nick R. ...) just jamming on this new bass Fender sent him.

    Hey J., you probably know this, but Neil Peart was introduced to Freddie Gruber, renown jazz drummer, by Steve "machine gun" Smith of Journey. Neil was taken by Smith's evolution after having played and learned from Gruber. Peart studied with Gruber in the 90s to "smooth out his technique and developed a more "circular" movement with his drumming. Also, one of Neil's earliest influences was Gene Krupa, famed swing drummer and innovator.

    Neil's higher toms are all attack and not much tone. Maybe has them tuned a little high, but that's why drummers always complain about the DW kit. They sound a bit choked. Compare this drum sound to any show where Neil was playing the Ludwigs. Night and day. The Ludwigs have the perfect balance of attack, tone, and resonance. The Tama drums sounded quite nice too. DW would be a distant 3rd with Slingerland bringing up the rear. No I'm not biased because I own a huge Ludwig Super Classic kit much like Neil's Roll The Bones kit. lol Bought them right after that album came out in Blue Shadow finish.

    I agree on the fretless, it's kind of a pointless exercise. And it is totally his aggressive style of playing, not the musical context (I don't think). If you listen to Pino Palladino's playing on Pete Townshend's Give Blood, it's rocking tune at a good clip tempo-wise, but it is still undeniably a fretless...
    I hadn't heard this drum solo in quite a while... I kind of enjoy the tonal stuff he does during the 3/4 section..but honestly, does ANYONE actually like all the electronic "junkyard" style sounds he's using before that? I just don't understand that stuff...it's totally irksome to listen to...and it's just the same stuff from an earlier solo with different sounds.

  • @IMNOTGEDDY
    @IMNOTGEDDY Год назад

    I think the drums sound fine, but what do I know I play bass? All I need to hear is the kick and the snare. Yeah Geddy's only using the fretless because that's what he was using when Nick recorded him using when he was doing vocals. I didn't even know it was fretless from listening to the song.

  • @russellsnodgrass7534
    @russellsnodgrass7534 Год назад

    He may not have utilized the nature of a fretless to its full extent, but that particular instrument inspired that particular song, so..... That's cool!
    Neils solo here is one of my favorites, a bit more improvised for the time in some parts, the dude is just awesome!

    What stands out to me on this drum solo is some thing that Neil discusses came out of his lessons with Freddie Gruber, which is the motion of his arm in between the stick hits, you can especially see it when he’s bringing around his right hand for a delayed hit When he’s doing some syncopation. You can tell he really worked on the motion of his playing and it was important to him because he felt it gave him a more fluid sound.

    Honestly Neil sounds a bit bored here, a little tired. I just wish he would let loose like back in the old days, but I definitely understand at this point with the long tours and his age he couldn't keep up with his younger self
