Back in 1985 or 86, at the end of his first season with Lotus, the year before Lotus got the Honda engine, I had to go to Los Angeles airport, to a Brazilian airline (Varig). It was early morning and, upon approaching the counter a woman there caught my attention (very hot). Then I noticed two guys at the same counter.
When I got there, I looked at the man next to me and mentioned that he looked like Senna. He just smiled and said he heard that a lot. Then I looked behind and saw several suitcases with the Quantas tag, just a day after the Australian GP, so I turned to him and said that he was Senna, and he admitted.
I told him then that when I was watching the Estoril race, when he was battling Piquet hard for first place, that I knew he was going to run out of fuel before the race ended. He, a bit annoyed, said that I knew, his box knew, everyone knew, except himself, as his car computer showed that he had enough fuel for another 1.8 laps while he was on the last lap.
I apologized and said that I didn't mean to know better but that every time he raced the way he did he ran out of fuel. I also said that I believed he would win the championship the next year. He asked why did I think so and I said that he was getting the Honda engine, which appeared to save fuel and that would allow him to drive hard. He said that he hoped I was right and we parted with "good luck" wishes.
On May first 1994 I got up at 4 AM to watch the San Marino GP, as I always did to watch Senna race, and saw the accident. I was expecting him to get out of his car and storm back to the pits, utterly pissed... then I learned he died.
That night I flew to Mexico City, where I was working on a project for Tequila Cuervo, and on Monday night I watched a show called "Caliente" on Mexican TV.
The show host, for that particular episode, invited several guests but they all must have had some contact with Senna one time or another.
There were two Mexican racers that raced in some formula (2,3, 4, I don't remember) and raced for the best team in the category at the time.
They recounted the day when the team boss informed that this Brazilian was joining the team but that they shouldn't be concerned, as they would continue being drivers 1 and 2 while the Brazilian was paying to race.
They said that they saw this kid arrive at the team box, wearing a racing suit without any sponsor patches, get in the car a go for it full force, returning with only the steering wheel in his hands.
They remembered an interaction between Senna and the team manager regarding tire pressure. It was raining lightly, Senna came to the pits and requested them to increase tire pressure to 25 PSI all around. The team manager said that the tire pressure was (if I remember) 20 on the rear and 18 in front, refusing to change it. Senna said that he was paying therefore they should do as he asked, and they did. He started putting two seconds per lap over every other driver. At the end of the deal, returning to the pits, he was asked "how come?". He then explained to the team manager that with lower pressure, when the tire touched the ground the threads would close (that category used threaded tires) and, by increasing the pressure the threads would remain open, expelling the water more efficiently. The team changed the tire pressure rules.
Finally, in a very long story (sorry), one of them asked Senna why did he changed the racing line when it rained, and gained so much time over the others. Senna said that the usual racing line was full of oil and rubber, a bad combination with water, so he would move to the clean less favorable racing line because he could get better grip there, and take the curves faster.
It took me ten years to watch F1 races again after Senna's death.

I didn’t watch F1 from 94 till 2006 .. but man I wish I met him , grew up in Brazil .. one day someone I was talking to said something to me about , oh you’re Brazilian and he was talking Pele. I said to him , instead of talking pele , just say Ayrton Senna to a Brazilian you meet ... saw him months later and he said to me . Fernando, if you watch Top Gear, with the three funny guys (Geremy, Richard and...) you may have heard a comment by Geremy. He said that he was never a Senna fan and that he liked Villeneuve, that Villeneuve was sometimes espectacular while driving. But the, he says, he participated in the production of a BBC documentary about Senna, which was when he got t know about the Brazilian. He said Villeneuve was sometimes espectacular when driving a car, but Senna was espectaculat every time he got in a car.

Brit F1 fan here. I was just old enough to catch the last few years of Senna in F1 and I remember the day we lost him. For the first time in my life, I felt this great sense of dread. It was as if all the rules had changed, and something utterly precious and magical had been blinked out of existence. He brought so much joy to my weekends and his racing was something that my whole family enjoyed. Respect and love forever.

when the film SENNA was in theaters in 2010, I went to watch, the emotion and the commotion was in the air, it could be noticed that everyone was affected... I myself did not hold back the tears for several times, the most incredible was that at the end of the film my immediate reaction was to stand and clap to the idol in respect to his story, and the most incredible thing was to notice that my reaction had been also the reaction of many others, it was a unique moment the moment of SENNA FOREVER 😥everyone clapping their hands in tears, never imagined that this could happen in a theater, watching a movie, and I've not seen that again... I think that translates what Senna represents to the Brazilian people - a Legend, a Hero.

He was fast because his flow was so relentlessly perfect. His ability to pick up the patterns and set up the car, his mind is driving far far ahead knowing the track and his body is controlling the car right now being able to make all the corrections without ever losing focus on what’s out ahead of him. He’s doing this with far far less than split second decision making and complete precise corrections. In other words the man was highly intelligent

A very interesting topic.Watched Senna at Adelaide in 85 into Lotus. He was going through the first S see sawing the streering wheel but he was quick Experts talk about human reaction times but these guys are way ahead of that. The 2 best drivers I ever saw on Race cam were Schumacher and Mansell (yes Nigel) both seemed to know exactly what the car is going to do and reacted before it did it . I was watching a video about a pilot who did see the same thing. He anticipated where his opponent would be & set his sight at that point. He upset the establishment but was a lethal fighter pilot.

He drove a few laps and that was all it took for him to be faster than the actual IndyCar drivers. They actually changed their style to be like that of Senna. He did the same with the LMP cars and a few other classes but he said that he didn't like them because they were too heavy and not as agile as F1 cars.

He could brake very late and not so hard as other drivers in order to carry more speed through the corners. It was Williams fault for not making a single piece steering column that was to Senna's liking. They welded an extra length to the original design instead of making a longer single piece. He should have refused to drive without a single piece, longer steering column. That was his only mistake.

    • @hristoitchov

Max Verstappen is no where near the level of Senna. Max is an agressive driver who pushes hard without calculating the risks. Senna was almost one with the car, he was pushing the car but knew exactly how the car would behave. He knew exactly what to do to defeat his opponents. The closest I have ever seen to another Senna is probably Marq Marquez, his riding is almost unbelievable at times. People hate him now but in the years to come after he is finished with the sport people will realise how good he was. Senna afterall got the respect he has after his career ended. 😪

The quote about transcending consciousness and driving off of instinct is very real. You might not take this as serious because I did it on forza motorsports 4, but there was a rival challenge where you had to race 11 miles on mount Fuji in heavy traffic and the lightest tap on another car or the rails would make your lap "unofficial". I actually set a record of #49 out of about 900k people I believe. It took me try after try but eventually I would start completely zoning out and my vision in front of me would turn into like this blurry tunnel of just crazy unconscious focus where i would be driving amazingly but like half out of my body almost. If you don't believe this go look at the leaderboards for the mt. Fuji touge challenge. #49 with a fwd eg hatch.

senna develop some corner technologies, Less distance road, he driving on the fastest lines track. Quickest route to drive any corner, he pass corner 1 just on the exact lines to take corner 2. Our he change the balance car more to front to the back, with acceleration, hits breaks. Someway other way he’s looking to move his head to right view or left view, this is the way you going.

    • @mirial2108

I'd say he was just more consistently on the limit throughout the whole corner, and braking later and taking more speed on the way in without any compromises on the exits relative to the others. I believe this is only achievable with a car that rotates very well and is therefore closer to the edge. He also seemed to look further ahead sooner than most of the others which suggests his style was more 'fast-in/fast-out' much like Schumacher. I never thought it was possible to be anything special if a driver was employing the same method and lines like everyone else in the way they teach at a typical driving school.

Ayrton senna created the first simbioses ever between a man and a machine, the was just the other half of his body, that would breathe with him through the engine performance, until today NOBODY but NOBODY drives like Ayrton,he could start the race like it happened at same because of the engine died on the worm up lap he stared on the last place of grid and obviously he won the race, that was AYRTON SENNA DA SILVA.

Gerhard Berger once said that Senna was very quick in slow corners. That would explain why he was so sucessfull at Monaco and other tracks with slower corners. He could squeese a little more out of the car in corners with his driving-technique. Like Fangio, Jim Clark and Michael Schumacher who were all famous for there precise and fast driving through corners.
But you also have to say that Senna always drove in top-teams (McLaren) or at least in competitive teams (Lotus, Toleman). And he only had a top driver as his teammate once with Alain Prost. All the other drivers were either pay-driver (Dumfries) or second rated (de Angelis, Berger, Andretti).

@@sticky-fingers The TG183 he drove in the first three races was crap. But the TG184 was a big step forward and a quite competitive car. Not a top-car but a solid midfielder.

    • @sticky-fingers
      @sticky-fingers 5 лет назад

@@TOFKAS01 Toleman was a young team (with a short story) and back in the days, only the first six scored points, so with 24 cars on track "solid midfielder" cant be called competitive IMO.
Without exceptional weather conditions at Monaco and Ayrton's amazing talent, his final championship result would be under 10 pts.

Sena was the greatest. However, he is being made more then the best because of his accident. No doubts he was one of the best ever ever. Don't forget Michael Schumacher. He was even better and has shown this even in direct competition to the god like Sena. I do not want to say that someone is better or worse, but a lot of this god-like thing ist mainly due to the fact that he lost his life at the race track. This makes people more a legend than pure performance without sudden drama. Senna still is one of the best. He introduced a completely different approach to formula 1. This approach to some extend was brought to perfection by Schumacher who opened up a complete new dimension of formula 1 racing.

The only reason Schumacher achieved what he did was because Senna died and there were no other drivers, or cars, that could stand up to the Schumacher/Ferrari combination.

I'd say that Schumacher is a better, or perhaps the best at being a competitive f1 driver. There are many aspects to that. Senna, on the other hand, was just IMO the most talented driver of anything on four wheels. For many driving enthusiasts, and racers, I suspect Senna is highly revered. Seeing him drive was like that scene where Wade Wilson deflected and split bullets. It was superhuman at times. He isn't without fault. Overly emotional, and rash sometimes. That probably cost him some wins and championships. This is something Schumacher did better. Schumacher maintained his cool and was calculative, and yes also manipulative, all for a win. He could maintain what I think of as technical perfection lap after lap. No magic though.

@@crunchtimeeats347 You must remember that Schumacher had full support and preference from Ferrari, while Senna was always head to head with Prost, not getting preferred treatment. On top of this, Senna was Ballestre's (FIA president at Senna's time) favorite target, and that man would hurt Senna every time he had the slightest chance. In that race when Senna and Prost crashed at the first turn, Senna, being the pole sitter, asked to start from the left, as it was his right. Ballestre denied and Senna told him that Prost, being on a cleaner surface, would pull ahead of him and get to turn 1 ahead, but that he would push to pass and they would crash, as it happened.
In one of the few races that took place in Rio, instead of Interlagos, after the presentation/warm up lap, Senna couldn't start because of a clutch problem. As all cars started, he ran to the pits and started in the reserve car. In a few laps he was up front, as if he were the only one racing while the others were just cruising but, at the end of the race Ballestre decided to disqualify him because he raced with the reserve car, giving the victory to Prost, the second place.
