Hey Ryan...Frost usually builds up in your freezer when moisture or humid air is working its way into the fridge or freezer then frost builds up around the coils. Maybe check the gasket around the door and make sure you are getting a tight seal. Limit the number of times you go into your freezer each day. Ive noticed in some of your videos the fridge door swings open when you are driving that may indicate a week seal as well. If warm air gets trapped inside the freezer it will rest around the freezer coil and freeze turning into frost and ice build up. Anyways i hope this helps. Keep up the great Vidoes Bro.
It's also just an inherent flaw of that freezer design. The freezer being in the same space as the regular refrigerator is one of the top reasons these fridges don't last very long. The big temperature differences seem to be the root of a lot of break downs. There aren't a lot of other choices for a van, but in household applications that design should generally be avoided.
it was doing that to mine and then leaking water which i was super worried about my floor , i fixed it by just lowering the temperature on the whole unit

Vanlife and RV living is HUGE here in Florida. RV lifer here! Regarding your freezer, you’ll have to turn off your fridge to completely defrost it. It’s a pain because you’ll have to empty your fridge of anything that’s perishable and pack into a cooler, but it’s the most efficient solution. Use a couple old towels to soak up the water. Beware of those fire ants. They are nasty little buggers!
or if you make the defrost process when you will be in colder weather during the trip to Alaska you can keep the food outside of the van so it won't spoil while you wait the fridge to defrost 😉
We live about 30 miles North of Tampa and there are several free camping areas near by, including our huge back yard (which has water & electric). We just found your channel, starting when you were at your friends house in Miami.
Hi, if you have an issue with food eating ants, go on line or find some peppermint oil. Get a spray bottle and put a very small amount into the spray bottle with a good amount of water. Then spray it where you may have ants coming in. Your van will smell nice and the ants hate that peppermint scent. It works for me
Dude props to you for living the van life For me, just knowing I might have a bunch of ants in my van (I realize they were outside but they were on your feet inside the van) that would be curtains for my van life. I’d have to call it and just sell the van. But good for you dude I mean it’s not my kind of thing but it certainly takes courage and a strong will to live that life I would assume. Wish I had it in me quite frankly. Safe travels dude

Not a tip for defrosting but for keeping frost free: put some kind of moisture absorber in there. I was defrosting my home freezer weekly for a while because it would screw up the fridge as well. I put about a half box of baking soda in each area and havent had to do it in 9 or 10 months now. I actually didnt even think the baking soda would work (although it got recommended multiple times) and that Id have to get one of those chemical moisture absorbers, but it worked fine. To my knowledge, theres no easy to defrost without turning it off. Good luck. Keep us updated.
You can always get a propane gauge so you know what your propane level is; also gas stations will refill your propane tank, which is cheaper than exchanging it for a new tank.

For the freezer, the legitimate way to defrost is to empty everything out of the fridge unplug the fridge let the ice melt clean, clean it out and then put everything back in. The MacGyver way 😂 to defrost the freezer is to basically heat the ice. So you would need a blow torch, the the kind you use for crème brûlée, you can find them in Walmart. Heat the ice and it would melt. You need to know that’s a messy way though you need to put down some towels and then just chuck the ice out as it as it melts. I would suggest emptying everything out of the fridge and doing it the proper way, especially if your fridge smells, give it a good clean with some water with bleach in it, then let it dry completely and then use baking baking soda in your fridge so put a baking soda container in the fridge and it would soak up all of the smells.
Oil clean up- Make a little funnel from a old water bottle and pour the oil back in the same bottle it came in is what I always do. It may save you a couple baggies or a disaster if one ever explodes on you, safe travels brother.
Ryan, If you go to a U-Haul or a propane dealer they will fill you take more completely. Those tank swap out services like Blue Rino only give you a partial tank. It is so much cheaper to fill your tank, per lb of propane, and they will fill it more. Give it a try. Cost less and more propane!
Youll.have to defrost your fridge and freezer. After it's thawed spray the freezer with Pam, you can remove the ice fairly easily when it gets icy again..👍
Thanks for sharing Ryan. I’m loving your journey to Alaska. Cracker Barrel is the place to go when on the road. I love all the cooking. Thanks for sharing buddy.
Sweetie, you should save the thick broccoli stems; peel the stems & slice into thin strips & salute with onions, celery, mushrooms & pepper strips for a great stir fry.
This road trip is awesome!! Great idea! I am one of your biggest fans. I can't wait till you get to Alaska!! That alligator meat looked yummy. That is crazy expensive too.

Would of been cool to meet you, Next time you around here I can show you around the Miccosukee tribe if you didnt stop by. Yep you need to defrost the freezer every 6 months approximately. An alternative is boiling water in small pan or hot water bottle and putting it inside freezer area for awhile to soften ice up then use an ice pick to chip away ice. ♥️🙏
As a Paramedic I tell my patients that got bitten by ants or mosquito's to place a small smear of toothpaste on the bite. By the morning the bite and the itchiness will be gone. Let me know how that works out for you.
I'm not a pro. But I used my clothing steamer to remove the frost from my mini fridge freezer. Worked like a charm. The wet heat melted it away like hot butter. It will melt fast so as my second favorite stoner would say. Dont forget to bring a towel!
About the freezer, get some freeze dried food or fresh and eat it as you get it. Use up all the stuff in the fridge. If you can remove the fridge, do so and set it outside wide open. If you keep it in there, be EXTREMELY diligent with having towels and wringing them out constantly. It'll take a couple days to defrost by itself without a fan or heater to accelerate the process. DO NOT STAB IT TO BREAK IT UP. Hit up a friend's house to do it?
Ryan, take all the food out of your fridge and put into a cooler with ice. Turn off your fridge, get a shallow pail for the melted ice to accumulate in. Plug in hairdryer and melt the ice buildup on high. After it melts, dry the freezer and fridge with towel, then turn fridge back on. Do this periodically when you start seeing an ice accumulation.
Love your rig! Yes, you need to shut down the frige and thaw it out. Use a cooler for your food while doing it... That frost glob in the freezer will hold all kinds of smells. I think once you thaw and clean, it will be scent free. Toss in an opened box of Arm and Hammer in the future! Good luck. Keep up the good work.
I know this might be random, but watching you make the breakfast burrito... one tip i would say is to put it back in the pan and heat after you wrap. gives it better grill texture and keeps the wrap closed and less likely to have the ingredients fall out! :)
I had alligator meat before, it's delicious! Tasted a bit like a mix of chicken and fish, it's a very delicate meat so maybe nuggets is not the best way to taste it but it still looked real good! It's so nice of you to make a peace offering to the ants after that little war you guys had lol 😄
Ryan, try putting in a cup of charcoal in the fridge for about half a day after cleaning your fridge out. Also a good thing to do when you're leaving your van behind when flying home or something like that when your fridge is empty. The charcoal helps with the smell a lot.
You might try boiling some water in the smallest pan you have and setting it in the freezer. It should melt the ice or only other option would be take everything out and put in a cooler and turn the refrigerator off while driving.
If your freezer looks that bad then you may have a bad door seal... Or you need to defrost more often. Remove everything... Melt the ice... Turn it back on and repack refrig
Bad Odor in the fridge- Vinegar and also ground coffee can work wonders, just put it in the fridge, the bad smell will be completely soaked up. . Nice vid ;)
😎👍 Thanks for making it longer and to fix your freezer turn it down and put boiling hot water under it every 20 min. Yeah you can turn it off too... Also for as short as you cook you can leave the handle on your pans..
leave door open, turn fridge to off or lowest setting, and use hairdryer on high.....don't forget to put a towel down to catch the water....done in 15-25 minutes, and no need to remove food doesn't take that long, might need to chip at it with butter knife while blowing with hair dryer
Kinda bummed never got to meet you but still enjoying these anyway. We had the same clouds up here in Palm Beach County yesterday, surprised it didn't rain. Glad the weather was nice enough you didn't need the AC for a night. Looking forward to the rest of the videos.
To defrost, you will probably have to turn off your refrigerator and take your food out to store in a cooler for a short time. You can use a hair blow dryer to speed up the defrosting and put a pan below it and towels inside and around the outside as well. I don't know if any water would leak around to the back of the refrigerator, and I don't know much about van refrigerators, but if you can pull it out at a campsite to let it defrost and rinse it with a hose to speed up defrosting that would be good too.
For me alligator tastes like summer sausage but better... it's much tastier than summer sausage imo. I took a trip to Louisiana back in early 2000s and I came across alligator meat. I've been looking for it but I'm way up north in Milwaukee Wisconsin. I'd have to order it online but not to keen on making it myself. One day I'll have it again 😁. I'm also not keen on waiting every few days for a video from you. 😆 I liked when you posted daily. Love your channel. May you have a safe journey across the nation 🙏❤️
put some cheese in the crease when youre done folding the quesadilla and then put it back on the hot pan. the cheese will act like a glue to keep the burrito closed. love your vids, cheers
If you’re going through GA, stop by Valdosta, about 30 mins past the FL border and try La Taqueria next to a gas station right off the military base. Pretty good small business spot for mexican food👍🏽
Hey ryan i live on road also without running water. The cleaner seventh generation is non toxic for food surfaces. Smells odd but awesome for cleaning anything like dishes or utensils ni rinse needed. Been doing it for years.
For the freezer, don't try to scrape the ice out before it thaws. I tried that once and punctured the metal tubes for the refrigerant. that makes the whole thing useless, fyi.
Thank you for the recommendation I am LOVING the Tazo Glazed Lemon Loaf. If you crack egg on flat surface you will have better odds of no shell on one handed cracking lol.
Just use any acid to make buttermilk. Lemon juice works really well, but use a full fat milk. If you don't have buttermilk, you may use plain yogurt or mayonnaise with a little more acid. Put a little white vinegar on the fire ant bites and the sting should go away.
Hi Ryan I’m loving your videos just a handy tip for safety when driving you should have a lock on your fridge to stop it swinging open when driving safe travels mate. 😊
Hey man, just wanna offer another tip, it has to do with when you were talking about the pan handle tip lol. Crack your eggs on a flat surface and you'll greatly decrease broken yolks and rogue shell pieces.
Ryan, i travel with peeled hard boiled eggs. NO mess to clean up. Great Value is my fav. They are the softest and easiest to chew. Just add Morton Sea Salt. Alligator tail is my fav. Cajuns know how to fry them.
we went to harbor freight and got a lightweight heat gun to keep in our RV. yes you have to take everything out and line the bottom with towels and its a pain but if you will be parked somewhere early enough and staying overnight you can wring the towels out really good and dry them outside overnight but for some reason these little freezers always frost up. Also the more food you have stored in it the more it frosts up. Do you have space anywhere for a small yetti? they work great for keeping cold foods. Um Alligator needs to marinate in creole seasoning ohhhh it's soooo good. BLM Land in Fla??? We have a lot of it. also most counties have free camping areas.
that's right turn it off n clean it good n put box of baking soda once all clean. we used to wipe frezzer compartment with super hot rag every week or so to keep that from happening n we kept stuff in freezer such as frozen vegg or everyso offtn ice cream l9l but we also put meat packaged in there like 1 I pound square oack of ground beef pork or chicken breadts
Your fridge needs air to circulate. Probably have stagnant funk. My thought would be the back of your fridge doesnt have proper airflow or its turned up too much. 🤷🏼♂️
In Sevilla (a souther city in Spain) there is a Feria called Feria de las Naciones where a lot of countries come every year with traditional foods. In South Africa's stand I tried crocodile and zebra. Crocodile tastes like chicken and zebra tastes like beef. A really cool experience and a bit expensive.
What kind of smell is it? Could be gas escaping, that would explain the frost too, or it could be a bad seal, if your fridge door opens very easily then it's probably not sealing well and thawing it out won't really do anything, since it will just freeze again in a couple days. As for thawing, by far my favorite method is to blast the ice with a hair dryer. With that compartment I would blast the bottom and sides until the ice came loose enough to dig it out of there, so you don't have water everywhere. Or you can just blast it until it all melts. I usually did it that way before I got a modern anti frost fridge and it's way better than waiting, because you can just take the food out, blast it with a dryer, wipe it down with vinegar (really good for cleaning and removing smells), then you're ready to put the food back in like 10-15 mins, so nothing will go bad.
love your videos! thank you for the amazing content, and hopefully i run into you in my van when i decide to go east since ive stayed west my whole life
I used to work in a bar restaurant and we sold Alligator Bites, lot of prep and marinade in beer a spices. When it's all said and done too much trouble.
As a floridian it is ironic* with all the gators we have it's hard to buy gator meat but you can usually roll up an buy gator bites at various spots in the glades. When cooked properly and paired with the right dipping sauce it can taste pretty good ! I know ppl say it taste like chicken but I don't really think it does. I think it has the consistency of chicken ? With a more seafood mixed in taste ? It's hard to describe but I'm glad you got a chance to try it. Cheers 🍻 . Ps in Florida never leave your van door open unless you have your mesh or something stopping insects. They are invisible until there's 100s lol and once there's 100s it's a nightmare. Oh and nothing can stop the ants , if they found something they like that's a done deal. You did the right thing by moving LOL.
Instead of using cooked bacon, you can just make fresh bacon w/o oil (bc there's a lot of fat on it already) and then throw the eggs in after. You save on cooking oil and also don't have a massive mess to clean up. Also, baking bacon is a nice alternative.
Only 1 seasoning you are supposed to use when you are down here in Florida. Everglades seasoning it tastes good on literally everything. You'll find it at any Publix or Winn Dixie maybe walmart idk
Hey Ryan. Another tip…go to a place that actually fills the LP tanks (ACE hardware does this). They’ll fill to a full 20 lbs. blue rhino and other tank exchange companies fill to 15 (as of 2008). At ACE they weigh it and fill in front of me so I know I’m getting a full 20. FYI. Night and day difference in tank life.
Hey Ryan...Frost usually builds up in your freezer when moisture or humid air is working its way into the fridge or freezer then frost builds up around the coils. You should also put box baking soda, help to relieve the smell in the fridge
I turned my fridge warmer to keep ice from building up so quick. Great trip you're on.
Get some bungee cords for you fridge, I think that should stop your door opening all the time. It could be why your freezer keeps frosting so much. 👍
Food looked great! Thanks for posting, I've really enjoyed your videos. Oh...(when is the last time you cleaned your stove...? LOL 😀) Cheers!
in baking area there is powdered buttermilk its In resealable can . vingar or lemon juice will make buttermilk
May you have a safe journey across the nation 🙏❤️
hello fellow milwaukee human
put some cheese in the crease when youre done folding the quesadilla and then put it back on the hot pan. the cheese will act like a glue to keep the burrito closed. love your vids, cheers
If you’re going through GA, stop by Valdosta, about 30 mins past the FL border and try La Taqueria next to a gas station right off the military base. Pretty good small business spot for mexican food👍🏽
You could always use a blow dryer to defrost it, but have some towels and plastic down because it’s gonna make a mess
First video and I can tell you genuinely felt for the ants. Well done on the offering, I like u I’ll keep watching
Im so obsessed with the crunch from your fried "chicken".
Just found your channel. Love the series and adventure to Alaska!
Hi Ryan I’m loving your videos just a handy tip for safety when driving you should have a lock on your fridge to stop it swinging open when driving safe travels mate. 😊
Hey man, just wanna offer another tip, it has to do with when you were talking about the pan handle tip lol. Crack your eggs on a flat surface and you'll greatly decrease broken yolks and rogue shell pieces.
where i used to work we had a paint scrapper that wed heat up an use to clean them but where yours is plastic id be careful
Love your videos! I always look forward to your new uploads. Sending positive vibes and support from the Philippines!
that's right turn it off n clean it good n put box of baking soda once all clean. we used to wipe frezzer compartment with super hot rag every week or so to keep that from happening n we kept stuff in freezer such as frozen vegg or everyso offtn ice cream l9l but we also put meat packaged in there like 1 I pound square oack of ground beef pork or chicken breadts
Your fridge needs air to circulate. Probably have stagnant funk. My thought would be the back of your fridge doesnt have proper airflow or its turned up too much. 🤷🏼♂️
I'd recognize my home town anywhere! Hope you enjoyed your time in Naples! and yes that Cracker Barrel is always packed!!!!
Maybe you can put a few pieces of velcro on the side and door then use the top velcro when driving. Good 🤞.
Put charcoal on your fridge it helps get rid of unwated smells
You should of gave them ants some of them alligator nuggets.lol🤣💯
I’ve always defrosted freezers with a blow dryer on hot. Then you don’t have to remove everything, just put a towel underneath
love your videos! thank you for the amazing content, and hopefully i run into you in my van when i decide to go east since ive stayed west my whole life
You want see his doodle?
When you come to tampa you can park on the water past the howard franklin bridge on the st pete side
Very cool lol i live close to the cracker barrel!! Glad u could stop here on ur way to alaska. Safe travels bro 🤙🏾
I used to work in a bar restaurant and we sold Alligator Bites, lot of prep and marinade in beer a spices. When it's all said and done too much trouble.
Watching from Tampa, Fl following along! Good luck brotha
I grew up on a 10,000 acre plantation in Florid. Battered fried gator tail is the best, and it doesn’t taste like chicken. Lol.
I love that you fed the ants. 🐜
Keep that crisco bottle and when it's empty it can be your used oil jug. When it's full then toss it. Also try some alligator stew!
Vegetable oil is good for land in small quantities, helps the soil breath
Have a great and safe trip brother!!
We have traveled to Florida four times lol from nevada we stay in two cars with our cat and dog
