- It's time to start going through a variety of common viruses, so let's start with the most common one of them all, the one that most often causes the common cold. It's called Rhinovirus, and it is a member of the picornavirus family. What does that mean? What are these like? How do they operate? Let's learn all about rhinoviruses!

I figured out the main risk factor for COVID19. It's blood pressure. Areas most affected. Lungs smelling part of nose heart even feet. Have most ACE receptors.
Men often have higher blood pressure race also a Biological factore .
Lowering blood pressure might reduce ACE genes

I wish people would do do their research and take viruses seriously. Instead of dismissing the CDC and medical community more people should be willing to learn that viruses are not to be toyed with. Im here after learning of the polio virus and its effects. Whether it polio, rhino, corona, flu, ebola or any other virus listen to the science for your health and those around you.
I think we will eventually, at some point in the future, figure out away to create a vaccine for the Rhinovirus. Maybe with some type of future tech that doesn't currently exist. Anything is possible in the future, we just don't know what will happen. I am trying to be positive.
May I just say you are an absolutely amazing human being for sitting through that “discussion” with Jesse Peterson

Which of the following viruses usually causes a mild rash in children, but is considered an important tratogen:
A. Rubella v.
B. Polio V
C. Rhino V
D. Influenza V .
Rhinovirus duh
Nice explanation. The more i learn about viruses, the more intrigueing they become.
Ever wonder what would happen if a cells own RNA got absorbed in a viral onvulope
Cells have DNA.
Well.......
I guess there must be some mechanism by which a virus recogonizes its own genetic material.
If u talk about bacteriophages, during the LYSOGENIC cycle, it sometimes happens that a part of the bacterial genome gets into the genome of the new virions and gets transmitted to other bacteria.
(addressed to Professor Dave, though not a direct reply so Ozzy&Drix2001 can see it) Don't cells always have some transient mRNA?
yes of course, but their genetic material is DNA
No
I currently have Rhinovirus and it is so bad i had a sore throat a bad cough runny nose and tiredness :(
It sucks having a rhinovirus
Thanks again Dave!
This guy deserves some kind of award for what he does!
Why does science have to be so complicated and confusing?? 🤣 this video is bringing me back to my Grade 11 Biology class, which sucked 😳 I appreciate the info and I’m so grateful we have people like you who understand this stuff, cause I do NOT 😂
I wish science was simple. I’m in so biology right now, and we’re going over the stuff we learned in regular biology, except we’re being told stuff like “remember that cellular process that you got confused by in biology? That was an extremely simplified description of the actual process, time to learn it for real.” It sucks, I’m so confused all the time, but it’s also fun to learn new things
Great information Professor Dave! Thanks so much!
hi prof D. I have a very important question... iv had a bunch of theologians claim that mountains act as pegs that hold the earths crust firm.. as far as i know that is NOT correct.. buut they throw in big words like isostasy and blah blah.. what is your take on the subject of mountains having a function such as acting as nails ,for the ground..
Just 1 virus particle can cause an infection? That's brutal.
I'm glad they're relatively harmless.

On one hand we know how viruses work. Yet OTOH it seems pretty crazy how they work.
Great videos professor Dave! Question. You mentioned that non enveloped viruses are particularly immune to detergents. Rhinoviruses are non enveloped, so why does washing hands make a difference in its control? I know you mentioned that rhinoviruses are less hardy than their other picornavirus brethren, and you said that low pH and temperature exceeding 33C are enough to destroy them, but the hand-washing environment of soap and water isn't usually that inclement. I'd be curious to know the chemical mechanism through which washing hands etc helps?
Still no answer. Oof.
Maybe thats why they said it kills 99% of germs. Besides you are still washing the virus off your hands. And soap helps this cause it makes water wetter.
@@12outland12 soap makes water... wetter...? 🤔
@@zcecp49 yeah it technically does. Soap breaks up the surface tension of water. This causes the water to spread out and more easily cover the surface of whatever you are getting wet. Think about it, soap itself is not slippery. But when you add water, the soap prevents the water from sticking to itself and instead sticks to your hands making them wetter. Seriously google it, it is true.
Washing your hands work because of the mechanical action. Soap and water removes oils on your skin which the virus may stick to, which whilst it doesn’t kill the virus, flushes it away from your hands
Do you have a video that explains why some infected people are asymptomatic, while others are not?
It's probably because of the viral load and how good your immune is
But I am not a scientist
I’ve always wondered the same
In my case i believe i don't get anymore colds and flu,but very rarely, because of my allergies. As a child and young man,i use to be sick all the time, specially in the winter, but around 35 years of age something triggered allergy to all forms of pollen, and since then i don't catch anymore colds,it's like i became immune to them.
If I went to live in the woods all by myself, and never have contact with another human (grow my own food, etc.), then I would never have a cold?
Maybe, but you would be very lonely and probably lose your mind.
then you will get diseases from natural causes
skun, as long as you had ample sunlight you would never get sick.

I remember the 1960s when you had the common cold science lab where you can go and isolate and play chest and what have you. They were doing studies on the common cold it's a shame they closed it down because you could have had a vaccine by now for most common colds

Nice to know!
if 1 kg water at stp occupies 1000cc, then if i extract h2 and o2 from 1 kg water and store h2 and o2 in liquid state, which will occupy more volume? 1 kg water or sum of two liquids?
Liquid H2 would be 1.5 L on its own.
Clark, that there is an RV... But, don't you go falling in love with it now, because, we're taking it with us when we leave here next month.
Would looove to talk to this guy about current ongoings
if the common cold can't withstand 33c+ how can they survive in the body which at the lowest should be 36c?, i do know we get a fever to geat up the body and fight it, but my question still stands
I'm not Dave, but...
1. Because of their exposure to outside air, the tissues of the upper respiratory tract are often significantly below core body temperature.
2. The core body temperature threshold for hypothermia is typically around 35 °C.
3. While in the body, rhinovirus is constantly regenerated. The virions don't have to "survive" for long to maintain the infection.
You have helped me cause I have RV right now

Is "tutorial" the right word for these videos? Typically that word is used when giving instruction, this is education, offering information--not instruction... I would go as far as to call him a "private tutor" (as its his own project), but even still, does tutorial really match??
Wikipedia: A tutorial is a method of transferring knowledge and may be used as a part of a learning process.
@@ProfessorDaveExplains thanks for the reply. I think Merriam-Webster does you even more justice:
1: a paper, book, film, or computer program that provides practical information about a specific subject
2: a class conducted by a tutor for one student or a small number of students
I get cold almost every month. I'm fucking sick of it.
Thanks for plain, simple info without agenda mate!
I have been on dialysis since 2014 and this year was the first time since I started that I got a cold. Or at least I think it was a cold. May have been that which shall not be named.
I think 3 or 4 coronaviruses are responsible for cold-type infections.
Please make getting a transplant your immediate priority (if it isn't already). Long term dialysis has many serious risks that patients in the USA are not really properly informed about. So I heard: ruclips.net/video/yw_nqzVfxFQ/видео.html

Why would these virions release histamine that iirc helps the immune system deal with them?
If I heard right, it's not virions but infected cells.
@@jika327 yeah i think that is correct. I think also (could be incorrect) cells can kill themselves aswell when they become infected, but, as I understand the virus takes over the cell and is unable to do so.
That's why virology is really important in the study of cancer because it would be great if cancerous cells killed themselves
I have a question about corona virus: In Holland the contamination rate should be around 3% by now. Shouldnt that be much higher after a few Months based on logic? If it is really 3% by now, would it have spread over the world like it Did? I think the contamination rate must be much higher by now which would declare a lot of phenonema, but not recoqnized by authority...though hardly tested, they keep saying 3%..
Yes
Sir can you explain how RNA got negative and positive signs,I mean whats the logic behind this
I dunno what you mean.
@@ProfessorDaveExplains i mean why it is called positive or negative RNA to be more particular on what basis we call them
Oh, positive sense means ready to be translated, negative means complementary to the transcript so negative sense must be converted to positive prior to translation.

IIRC, some decades ago the US Army conducted a hand washing experiment to see if the incidence of cold-type infections could be reduced by increasing the frequency of hand-washing.
2 groups of several thousand soldiers either washed as usual, or washed at prescribed times in addition to their normal routine.
The answer was yes.
