As of about this time this year, the CPLs in Deshler are exactly 100 years old. Their first purchase of CPLs included the ones in Deshler, during Q4 of 1924. Great video!
Cool trains! The bird is a cormorant or anhinga AKA water turkey. They catch fish by diving from a perch. We had one visiting our reservoir in Flemingsburg, Ky a few years ago.
Busy railroad town, that Deshler! On the manifest trains, I spotted the following fallen flag markings - DME (part of CPKC), SSW (part of UP), MRL (now back inside BNSF), NYC, NYC Conrail, CP SOO and KCS! A couple of those cars are far from their original home tracks!!
That was by far one of the best videos. Not only did you get lucky with the two trains following each other, but you showed a bit of the town and parks. I feel like I spent a day vacationing in Deshler.
Another excellent video Brian… Those old color position signals and all the standard signals were a nightmare especially when the sun was on them… Later towards the end of my career those LED’s were awesome…. You could see them in the day from a mile or more away….! “Smoke Em” brother…! 🚂🚂Greg
One AWESOME Union Pacific double stack train and three AWESOME CSX mixed freight trains at the wye. The Canadian Pacific and Norfolk Southern locomotives pulling the grain train was very COOL to. Thanks for sharing JT!
Thank you. Great train videos as always. Appreciate the view of town too. Be good if they could re use those old historic signals at museums and railway display sites rather than send them for scrap.
Perfect first train. UP with an American flag mural and oh yes, a double stack. Made my morning 🌄😊You captured some beautiful scenery here.you got a horn salute cool.❤Those old train signals were cool to see! Loki wants to sleep. Thanks for a great video Mr JT. Be blessed.❤
Wow! Excellent catching all the trains in Deshler, Ohio, I like them, they're awesome, @JawTooth, Brian, thank you very much and have a nice day and night.
Hey jaw tooth awesome trains. Definitely a railfans town with tracks all over the place. Id love a house right by diamond so id never miss a train. Have a great railroad day 🚂🙋♀️
Awesome location! Love those old signal's, hope they never replace them and keep them maintained. It saddened me when they replaced the old signal's on the Louisville to Nashville main line, the new ones just lack the character and have them solar panels above them, I'm sure their more efficient but have the modern day ugliness!😊👍
It's kind of odd, but from ground level they are difficult to see, but in the locomotive cab, even with the sun, they are much more visible to the train crew than they are to us on the ground. However, from ground level, if you have an old Polaroid sunglass lense you can place(hold) in front of your camera lens you can actually see which lights are lit, the caveat is you might not be able to determine what color is being displayed on the signal unless you know the color setup. That's how I'd view signals trackside from ground level. As the trackside signals are designed to be viewed from the locomotive cab, not the ground.
Awesome video. Cool train meet and a nice horn salute! Nothing like the canal ridge salute! Those green tank cars caught my eye and i checked the placard and they were carrying nickel oxide. Of the many uses were air bag propelent to rear view mirrors. I just noticed on that 2nd to last train there were kittens that were climbing over the rails and looked like they were going to go near the passing train. Love the night train too! Thanks for the video Brian stay well roll on
Thanks for watching! Happy Thanksgiving! Thanks for the Super Thanks again Mark! Yes, I saw those kittens. When I tried to get close to them they ran into the brush. They were not tame at all and they are afraid of people. I just got back from a couple of soccer games that the girls had. Lillia got 2 goals today. Thanks again Mark!
@JawTooth your welcome Brian, good for Lilia! Feral cats are just like any other wild animal. Some areas here have problems with them. They do fix and release programs to control the population.
Thank you for this video from your railfanning trip to Deshler, Ohio on 10 October 2024, Jaw Tooth! I enjoyed watching the trains in this video. You were in the right place at the right time (at 28:03) to catch that second train that came off the east/west tracks to head south after the first train had come off the other interchange track from the east/west line. I also enjoyed the tour of downtown Deshler, Ohio. I agree that some of the buildings in Deshler, Ohio would look good on a model railroad. Like you I am curious as to why there are some doors on the second floor of the one building that when opened would allow someone to fall 15 feet or more to the sidewalk. I wonder if the doors once opened out to a balcony that was attached to the front of the building. (Posted on 26 November 2024 at 1709 CST.)
It’s your birthday? Well happy birthday! You mentioned walking so much; I have a E-bike I use. Perfect for rail fanning. On/off road type. Goes pretty much anywhere. Just a thought
I would bet that is a rare occasion for two train heading in opposite directions would go south on the Toledo Sub that close together. Great luck Jaw Tooth!!
Interesting seeing UP units that far east! UP lines mostly stay west of the Mississippi and none go east of Illinois. May want to consider filming those CPLs at night! Then you can really see the colors stand out. Thank you Brian for another great video!
Sometimes they even had balconies in front of those doors. I remember seeing some buildings like that with guarded balconies with tables and chairs on them for relaxing. Just don't see that much anymore.
Amazing video WOW. Super location and great trains. Interesting town too. I enjoyed everything about this one. Happy birthday! You even added a night train on the end. Stay safe, take care. ❤
Great catches today, glad you got the train for the 1st time on the track off to the left, and then one coming out... that was wicked lucky. Looks like you used your old camera for the evening shots today. Was thinking about the new camera and I think you need to add some more red to the picture. That might fix the faded/bleached look. Don't know if you have the ability to do that. Just a suggestion. Keep the videos coming. I miss when you don't post, like yesterday. Watching is part of my morning ritual... Thanks Jaw Tooth and BE CRAZY!!!
Another awesome video JT and if I don’t get to see another one from you between now and Thanksgiving day I just wanted to wish you and your family a happy Thanksgiving and as always you stay safe out there and watch your back and we’ll see you on the next one
That's interesting that you mentioned how flat it is in Deshler. Here's a fun fact about that part of the state-it was all under water at one time, part of a larger version of Lake Erie during the Ice Age.
Thank you for the Super Thanks! I just got home and noticed this. I really appreciate it a lot especially with the gas prices today. Thanks again Mark!
Thank you for the architectural tour of Deschler, v. interesting. In England UK we tend to raze lovely old buildings to the ground. I loved especially the doors leading to a nasty drop! Those doors remind me of Lord Vetenari's office in the Discworld novels, except his door was to get rid of the undesirables! Great colour light signals, I do hope they keep them going. Also, is it my imagination but I have not seen an articulated car carrier in a while, have they all been scrapped!
Can see why u need CPUs down your way went to job your way few years back got off 75 making good time got on road called rattlesnake ridge and sure enogh it was like a snake coiled up look to your left see were u just was great luck catching 2 trains at the y love it 👍 😊
The drive through on the building looks a lot like the bank drive through windows from the 70s. They also had a green tint to them because the glass was multiple layers thick - designed to stop most bullets and give the teller time to hit the floor/flee. If not a bank, a business that did a large volume of cash businesses like some local utilities back then when you could drive through and pay your bill.
Watching you in Deshler with the various tracks reminds me of a question I posed some time ago, and haven't yet found an answer to! What are the minimum/maximum curvages for rail tracks, and what would be the minimum/maximum speeds on a curve for each? I know from playing model trains with my sons (a long time ago!) and my grandson more recently, that curve pieces seem to be fairly wide, with NO right-angles, and so I assume this is true of REAL tracks as well? Also, is there a finite length to trains? Some seem to go on and on forever! Thanks for a thoroughly entertaining view of several trains in this post! Need I say that I enjoy each of your posts. You have a wonderful way of explaining railway trivia!
There isn't a maximum length for trains in this country. I have seen them three miles long. I don't know what the maximum curve radius is. Some curves are too sharp for 6 axle units. There is a spur in Winchester Ohio that doesn't allow 6 axle units
You beat me to the bird ID, Scott. We have a lot of cormorats and mergansers out here near Buffalo, especially near the Niagara River. I see them alongside the Niagara Falls CSX line regularly in North Tonawanda, NY
Do they have oil and grease on those curves? It doesn't sound like they have one of those units.. Happy Birthday!❤🎉 Great video! The last train's lights looked like molten fire! ❤️💯

It's kind of odd, but from ground level they are difficult to see, but in the locomotive cab, even with the sun, they are much more visible to the train crew than they are to us on the ground.
