I really do find it funny, though sad, that people got incredibly mad at the episode because of the fact that it basically made people feel like their "fan theories" on how the show will go/end were... well mocked. They felt like "Now it won't happen because they did this." and that's all they're mad about. Also, I never noticed how "Quality" wasn't a part of the machine, that's a really cool detail.
I didn't like it because it insulted my intelligence using meta "jokes" about story writing, from a show that's had a sharp decline in writing for some time. Most people don't care about theories, because they don't have them. Most people just watch the show to enjoy it.

I feel this episode was sort of vent art for the creators, let them get out their stress in a creative way but also make one that is able to be seen by their audience so they can get an understanding of their thoughts

@@captainjakemerica4579 I think he's saying that the Simpsons often resets after each episode so each seems like it's a filler, like Morty's mindblowers or interdimensional cable. and that worked out great for the Simpsons writers. However, the writers of Rick and Morty want the show to have structure and character arcs, something the Simpsons doesn't have. and I am a fan of both but Rick and Morty is better in my opinion.

I was trying to get my friend to watch it and I told him about the dragon episode, I can tell you the look on his face was amazing, he turned to another friend of ours and questioned him about it, he became more horrified. He watched it though. I think he thinks I'm weird. I have no clue what the point of that was, sorry for wasting your time have a good night mate.

When the characters explained that this episode isn't canon, I thought of Matpat and laughed.
It was as if Dan and Justin said "don't even bother theorizing about this one, Matty."

They don’t do the typical “set up of events for an epic conclusion” schtick. They go for the most unpredictable and awesome of the plot twists. S4 finale definitely redeemed itself.

I personally love that Rick explained the Bechdel test in a way to make us understand that the makers of R&M understand what the test is and why it's a thing, just to make sure that we understand that they're not making fun of the test itself.
The episode shows that the test is stupid. You can do a sexist story that passes the test, as Rick and Morty do. And you can make a story for example about a woman who tries to escape from a toxic relationship in which she doesn't talk with any woman, and it will be a lot more of the taste of a feminist.
@@harlizuga that depends on the way you interpret the test. The way it's classicly described is definitely stupid in this way, but what the test is actually for is to check if the female characters are actual characters instead of just objects to be interacted with.
The intention of the test is reasonable, it's just that the best-known interpretation of it is stupid
The only thing that’s very clear in this mental labyrinth of an episode is that they’re lampooning it and calling it stupid, generally any way you try to apply a “test” to story writing is easily bypassed and like in this case, you can always write a story that completely reverses it’s intent and still pass it, likewise you can usually do the opposite just as easily and still not pass it. Stories along with any art have infinite contexts so hard rules don’t work well with creativity

Too Many Cooks the best 80s sitcom ever. Sadly went off the air in a time before the internet due to trying to please much too large a fanbase. Really too bad that it never made it to dvd because the masters of the episodes tragically were lost in a warehouse fire. At least they were able to stitch together all the opening credit scenes and they can still be seen on RUclips.

Two random thoughts came to mind and they just linger in my mind:
1) There's no hidden meaning to "the fifth wall", it's just "the fourth wall plus one", rendering the concept silly in a Monty Python kind of way.
2) A show that comes to mind having an incredibly creative and daring first season then getting sabotaged by network greed taking it over is Ren & Stimpy on Nickelodeon back in the early 90s.

It isn't the first time he has done it though. He actively and fervently prays, then renegs in the time splitting episode with the testical monsters "please oh god hear my prayers - F u god!" He's pragmatic and understands that he doesn't know everything, so the ol hail Mary while not his go-to, is a viable last resort in the sense that it 'might' work.

I think the side-story with Beth and Summer killing the scorpions is also about how you can technically pass the Bechdel test, but do so in a half-assed, non-sensical way. That writing up something lazy just to pass this test shouldn't really be considered an achievement and wasn't the point of the test in the first place.

Hi Matt Pack, I actually don't think the story clock structure is absent at all in the interdimensional cable episode despite Rick referring to is as a one-off. In that episode, although the title is "Interdimensional cable" the true story clock narrative follows the relationship between Jerry and Beth. If you map their progression throughout the episode it matches the structure Dan Harmon uses almost perfectly- but what makes it different from some others is that they used it as a base, so they can then have their other characters (Rick and Morty) do anything they wanted and deliver as many random jokes and ideas that the audiences love.
It creates the illusion that the entire episode was random joke, while at the same time providing a fulfilling a character arc within Jerry and Beth behind the scenes subconsciously.
the A plot of those EPs IS the cable their watching, the B plot is just there to do something with the characters that wouldn't partake in such event
11:00 my interpretation was how solely focusing on whether or not something "passes" the bechdel test (duvernay test, vito russo test, ect.) as a metric of quality often doesn't make for a good story (or often even good representation). the bechdel test was coined as a humourously low bar that should be ubiquitous in most media and treating it like a boolean for whether a show is "good" or "bad" at representation misses the point. plenty of media with good representation doesnt pass it. plenty of media with bad representation does (morty's "story" is the example of this).
im not going to pretend to know what the actual intention of this scene was but i do know rick and morty has a great deal of female writers. i dont think it was entirely roiland and harmon venting their frustration, as your graphics kinda suggest.

That episode was *literally* about this channel. The real fifth wall break is the fact that a fictional show not only referenced the real world, but referenced and reacted to theories about said fiction in the real world, and the reactions to those theories in the real world. It's bordering on sixth wall.

You should have included the fact that the "bechdel test" was originally a comedy cartoon made in 1985 by Alison Bechdel. She also said "The Bechdel test was a joke... I didn’t intend for it to become a real gauge’. Love these R&M theories, great videos :)

I honestly feel like this might be the most important rick and morty episode in the entirety of the show. After you went in depth with it, I not only 100% agree with your points about it, it also gives me a certain amount of closure no matter what direction the show ends up going in. No matter how it ends, this episode is here to make a statement and even tease an alternative ending. It also makes me feel like fan fiction is actually a good idea in this instance.
I wish there was a way to say to them, "Ignore us! You have a beautiful show for all without our (fans) OR Adult Swim's input." I hope they don't get tired...I really do love Dan and Justin.

I don’t think the ticking clock, which makes it so that “they can get there because if it’s too easy they won’t get there” isn’t about constraints making writing easier. I think it’s about how a literal ticking clock as a writing tool is an easy way to push the plot forward and build tension.
I think the biggest issue is the reason we loved the show is because it really has no hard and fast rules and anytime the show starts to pigeon hole they scrap the arch and start again. even when they miss the mark with me it is always building to something or allowing the story a vehicle to explore. they will continue to control the story, they don't have to do anything so they can do everything. this is so complicated but so simple so it never will get stale but you have to let go of the arch because it could change or dissolve completely. the idea is the story isn't important only the Characters. I think there is only 2 or 3 episodes that once was enough of a watch but even those episodes are good. you have to sacrifice pleasing the fans to keep the fans if that makes sense.
