- Illness, disease and plagues were a gloomy part of everyday life in the Middle Ages. Living conditions for both the rich and poor were very unsanitary and life expectancy was very low. Leprosy and syphilis were two common diseases that plagued daily life. How did they handle treating disease, centuries before penicillin was invented? A single woman’s body found in Dixon’s Lane in York is going to help Malin Holst find some answers. Medieval approaches to disease may actually have been a little more advanced than we might think.

We have an ex leprosarium here in the center of Amsterdam. Opposite Rembrandt's house. Only the original stone gated entrance remains, with sculpted figurines of people suffering with the disease. You had to knock to be let in, but before the door would open, a bell would toll to let people in the vacinity know there were infected people nearby. What a time to be (just about) alive.

I can't imagine how fearful people must have been about disease. Even worse, how they couldn't do much of anything to stop it. Helplessness to me is the worst feeling of all.
I cared for a patient with Hansen's Disease back in the 1980s as a Home Care nurse. She looked like a normal healthy individual. You would not know she had this disease if you were not told. She was an elderly lady and was successfully treated and cured with multiple medications. We should not continue to hold this disease in contempt any longer.
I am thinking leprosy included several skin ailments. Hansen's being one. Syphilis probably existed since biblical times.
@@elpidiogonzalez8193 recently it’s been shown that syphilis, like the plague has been around in some form for 100,000 years or more. Especially the plague, recently a Neolithic burial site of serval humans were found to have died from it. This is several thousands of years before we thought possible for these diseases to exist.

I mean, the leprosy itself has been a thing for millennia. It must've taken hundreds of generations, possibly even millions of trial and error before they got it right and actually figured how to at least contain it without the help of the almighty god.
They didn't really understand.... But I believe ancient scientifists had their own way too....
Well I think they understood that certain things were contagious… even if they didn’t know how or why. But they began over trial and error to try and decrease the spread.

Just caught this. The medieval syphilis phenomenon was an eye opener. Thank you for your time and effort. How anyone survived to adulthood during this era amazes me. Of course, they died of old age before 30.
Actually the statistics are skewed by a very large child mortality. If you survived childhood you had a pretty good chance to reach middle age, and if you were lucky you could reach your 70's or even older. Of course, you had to be lucky and avoid getting any infectious diseases or be killed in violent conflict. But still, there were a lot more older people around in the middle ages than people think.

If they did survive to adulthood they lived as long as we do. The death age seems so low cuz so many children died

Interestingly the bacteria that causes leprosy is also found in armadillos in the US and other countries with them. Mycobacterium laprae (Hansen’s disease) is a zoonotic disease, meaning it can be spread from animals to humans but it’s a rare transmission.

I don’t think, for all its editorial contribution, the music is completely destructive to the content. But it absolutely has mix volume issues!
Tuberculosis was terrible, too. In addition to affecting the lungs, it could infect almost any part of the body, with horrible, painful and fatal results. Respiratory tuberculosis is on the rise in crowded populations, is antibiotic-resistant now and difficult to treat. We can no longer be too smug about our ability to fight bacterial diseases, and are in our infancy about anti-viral treatment, mainly we rely on vaccines, if they can be developed in time.

We take so many modern things for granted nowadays. Getting a simple cavity filled very often prevents eventual infection/loss of that tooth. Back then that very well could kill you if you don't pull that tooth out before an infection sets in. Back then an abscess wasn't a death sentence but it was very dangerous. Roll the dice, you may or may not get lucky and survive.
Even things as simple as nose spray. No, a stuffy nose usually won't kill you but that one time the nose spray keeps your nasal passages open enough to drain and prevent a sinus infection would prevent death back then. We think of things like nose spray or allergy medication as simple comfort, kinda things. They suppress minor symptoms. If we get a sinus infection, a simple course of antibiotics fixes us right up so we don't think of minor symptom suppression as terribly important. Now, we use nose spray to breathe a little easier and don't even think of what it might prevent.
100%. We take so much granted especially as Americans. Lets make progress but also acknowledge where we are in history and how lucky we are to be here and not there.

Yes, the humble nasal spray will help keep your sinus passages open enough to drain. That helps prevent sinus infections. Just an FYI. People also got colds etc in the Victorian era. They also burned lots of coal and wood in poorly ventilated homes.

They proly had to take the syphillis part out because their old documentary on the syphillis enigma theory has long been debunked.

Yet this documentary still starts by saying "the true story of syphillis" lol..

The living death means that person was completely excluded from society and was even given a mass standing in a grave to symbolize the lepers social death.

Although armadillos particularly the nine banded armadillos do carry leprosy and are fairly prevalent in the US namely in Texas as well as other southern states, what most people don’t know is very few humans are susceptible to catching leprosy from armadillos it’s a very small percentage that’s able to get the disease at all. And it’s curable now long as it’s caught in early stages as you cannot cure the deformities that result from it

I had no idea leprosy was curable! Just last year it gave me a chill seeing an armadillo cross my path. Now I would the little guy!
I’m glad that have those signs on the lab doors reminding entrants to show respect for human remains. It’s important that we study them, but we should never forget that they are us. I have the same reverence for animal remains because I don’t believe that human lives are intrinsically more valuable than those of other animals. They love their mates and offspring and grieve when they lose a loved one, just as we do.

I find it interesting that (40:30 ish) I've come across these same people in the current epidemic that shall not be named. Some people are completely terrified of disease, but it seems most people accept it as part of life and something one'd like to avoid, but most choose to carry on with life.
