    • @naturalexplorer
      @naturalexplorer 2 года назад +1

      That's earlier than I thought. Used to see them every 2nd or 3rd Saturday at the Narrabeen Antler probably in 1977 (maybe late 1976). These were the early days for sure and they grew into a cult like following from there. I thought this was likely their origins but Chatswood in 1974 says these origins are at least 2 years previous.

    • @ianoz1
      @ianoz1 2 года назад +1

      @@naturalexplorer Jim, Rob & Andrew formed "Farm" when they were still at school. They did mini-tours in coastal NSW as a trio. I met them in the latter half of 74 when they were at uni. I was their vocalist for a couple of months then life happened, but we parted on good terms. We lost touch, but I knew the owner of a printing business that backed onto the alleyway behind Rob's house where they rehearsed and he'd update me on the shenanigans, like when their new gigantic singer first shaved his head.
      Flash forward to early 78, and I'd been hearing things about this new band. Curiosity got the better of me and I went to see them at French's on a Tuesday night. Blown away by what I saw and heard. Became an immediate fan. Only then did I recognise them (Jim, Rob & Andrew looking very different from how they did in 74). Over the following 4 years, I got to see and hear a lot of things on their way to success and was so happy for them. They remain the nicest people, despite time, the "road" and the "industry" having a habit of turning angels into arseholes. I last caught up with Jim & Rob briefly 5 years ago and they were still the guys I knew from back then.

    • @naturalexplorer
      @naturalexplorer 2 года назад +1

      @@ianoz1 Great stuff. Those early days were really raw, loud and super energetic. They had a cult following on the northern beaches and full on in those early 3 - 4 years. They became a lot more commercial as it all exploded but whenever I saw them later on they still always put on a great show.
      I was just looking at their concert in Chicago which is more fall on than this one. The energetics and the power to harness energy amazing after all this time. From all the guys. Really impressive.

As good as the epic shows I remember from the early 1990's in Chicago. I was following the set lists along the tour, and I appreciate how they varied their sets for the different shows. Not a disappointment per se - but I would have loved to hear "Dreamworld" one last time, but that takes nothing away from what was a magnificent show in every way! Midnight Oil Play Surprise Sydney Show With New Bass Player Adam Ventoura
    by PAUL CASHMERE on FEBRUARY 18, 2021
    in NEWS
    Midnight Oil broke in their new bass player Adam Ventoura in Sydney last night.
    Adam replaces Bones Hillman who died from cancer on 7 November 2020. He has toured with Ian Moss and came to Midnight Oil’s attention when he was recording at Jim Moginie’s studio.
    Peter Garrett said in a statement “It will be a moment heavy with emotion to go onstage without our long time brother in music, but Bonesy always made it clear he wanted these gigs to go ahead without him so we know he will be with us in spirit”, said frontman Peter Garrett. “We’ve just started rehearsing with Adam, who, amazingly, has been living under our noses in Sydney. There’s something primal about his playing that caught our ears that makes the band sound great.”

    I grew up watching the Oils in pubs around Sydney... Besides the brilliance of the music writing, the lyrics, the performances, it was also a band that made us "aware" about greed , the corps ect..
    And I always found it funny, sometimes , someone , at a gig, or online in this modern today, , says they'd wish Garrett would stop talking between some songs , and forget the politics, and just do music.... LOL.....
    I guess sometimes, it proves some people don't know whats in front of them, nor consider even the message....... Well.... at least FTW, they know good music.... ;)

    Credit must go to the ' new ' Bass player who has learnt all these tunes
    He was obviously recruited into the Band due to his capabilities and compatibility.
    Notice he gets a microphone and Rotsey doesn't. LOL!!
    OMG!!!! The beginning of Blue Sky Mine nearly goes into " In a gadda da vida " by Iron Butterfly. Fair Dinkum mate!!!! It's uncanny ( X- Men )

    I remember an interview - they needed a new singer and Peter Garret turned up in a very small car like a Honda civic - they all said this is the guy !!

      @@c.t.b. ah ok, it reminded me of a pose Peter Garret did in a clip once, maybe he just replicated that which is a bit pathetic. I was thinking of the fan pyramids at New Model Army gigs as well, they're still on
