Number 4 doesn't make sense: for starters Ponyo is set in Japan while I believe it was stated that Kiki's town is based on northern Europe's architecture so it could be safe to assume it's set in a western country. But even if they were both set in Japan, by looking at the technology (I'm specifically thinking about the car models you can see in the movies), Ponyo seems to be set in the XXI century, while Kiki looks more like it belongs in the 1960s or even before.

Spirited away was my favourite ghibli movie and after hearing how it has a connection to prostitution, it makes a lot of sense. I might not have the same feeling while watching it again but it will make me feel more sad because of that connection.

yuu星 from what i saw in another comment, this movie was based off of a manga that the author wrote about his life after ww2. his sister perished from starvation so he wrote it as a form of coping (since he felt a lot of guilt) and a memorial. sorry if it not the best or most accurate description.

To be honest, I like the way Miyazaki manages to talk about serious topics in a subtle and light way. It actually makes movies like Spirited Away more valuable to me because of the deeper meaning. It doesn’t matter if you’re a child or an adult, you can always find something interesting about these movies. And the thing is: The movie itself can still stay the same, you can still see the unrealistic stuff as real, but, on the other side, it makes you think about the sad reality.
For example, to me, No-Face is still an unidentified creature that actually never really harmed Chihiro and became quite nice in the end, but, at the same time, I know that he can stand for a man who wants to take a woman’s virginity for money. (In a video about him someone also said that he could represent human nature in general and act like different kinds of people in different situations.)

I cry when I watch Akira, everytime. They were just a group of boys and on a bike ride to took them to human hell. Grave is about the past and yes, it's sad Akira is about the madness of human's today and tomorrow. Something Philip K. Dick could of written had he seen( witnessed) the horror of Hiroshima and Nagasaki during WWII on a more personal level.

At the end, there's a kind of post-credit thing: a picture of the whole family together (With the mom) and a new baby (Which I'm not sure if May's okay with). But all that said, the family is fine and happy.

In Totoro, the mom didn't actually die neither did the kids because if you see the credits it shows mom returning home in a taxi and the kids playing with the little boys and so on.

The my neighbor totoro one has its flaws.
1. There’s pictures of them with their mother coming home,
2. They walk home with granny and the kanta
3. It wasn’t mei’s sandal , she wore one without flowers on it. I checked.
I think they explicitly say in the film that the sandal from the river didn't belong to her. I don't know how someone could say she drowned, and use the shoe as evidence, when it shows the literal opposite.

Almost every word she said about the true incident matched up with wikipedia if you were wondering
Totoro being a god of death has been rebuked by a ghibli representative. According to him he is tired of listening to totoro being a god of death. He definitely says that totoro is not the god of death, and mei and satsuki is alive and well. In addition when miyazaki was asked about mei and satsuki’s present status, he said that they all married and are grandmas now. On the other hand, spirited away as a brothel was half proven by the director himself. However, he did say in the interview(which was in 2002 i think) that this did not mean that the bathhouse is actually a brothel, but just had few similes and metaphors related. Leprosy patients in mononoke hime is also half proven by ghibli, so i think we can believe it. By the way, the different endings for both castle in the sky and spirited away is officially bashed by ghibli.

The Totoro theory can be debunked if you actually pay attention when watching the damn movie. There's a scene shortly before Mei runs away where it specifically shows what Mei's slippers look like, and they are not like the one found in the pond

In Totoro, It is speculated that Mei IS dead, because after Mei and Satsuki are reunited, they no longer cast a shadow.
The lead animator addressed this and said they simply forgot the shadows for that one clip.

The whisper one is just more tragic than anything. Plus, I think Ghiblis broader messages contradict those thoughts of feeling like they dont have any value because they have ""wasted"" their lives. Not only are Ghibli movies about preserverance as theyre also about accepting to what life gives you with humillity in order to keep living(Hashitakis curse not being fully brocken, Sophie never gaining brown hair again) and against ageism like in Howls moving Castle or Kikis delivery service. I hope that story is just a mith.

That Spirited Away legend is totally untrue. Miyazaki already explained that the bathhouse was supposed to represent "Japan's modern society", not a brothel.
Also, No Face gave Chihiro money because he became corrupted after seeing how much power money gave him. He thought money can buy him love. Besides, Chihiro was forced to get a new name because if she forgets her real name, she would lose her way home and be confined as a slave in the bathhouse forever.

They are beautiful and innocent in a way but is really lowkey creepy. If someone made a horror version of those movies it wouldn't be hard i think
i find them creepy too cause of the superstition and folklores that included which we also believe in where im from. seriously, if you cant find your way back home, do not accept any food they offer!! you wont get out!

Dont worry, all rumors about totoro being god of death is officially rebuked by ghibli official. I read his responce email to a question that asked whether totoro was god of death, and he seemed to be annoyed about people always asking that kinds of stuff and begged to watch the movie with no worries.

I need to actually buy these films. Let's face it. Hollywood has seen better days. Now, all the films are repeated, boring cliches. But here we have the real work of a genius. These films brings out an emotion. A mix of surreal fear, something alien, yet strangely familiar. I love these.
I think Spirited Away and Totoro were the most likely ones to be true.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but I dont think these are at all true, Miyazaki is too wholesome to make movies with dark backgrounds like this, and if you've read his interviews about these movies, you'd think differently.
I know it wouldn't be very childfriendly to make Totoro really be the death of god,
but maybe Ghibli was moved by the tragedy of the drowned girl and wanted
to make her s happy ending. Like, he got inspired by it. :)
