I really liked this episode, something I want to point that interests me in episode 3 or 4,can't remember which one and it's the part where the doctor gets framed for the dinosaurs appearing,in most other serials that would be a bigger part of the plot,as the doctor and his companion usually just turn up out of nowhere in other episodes and no one has any real reason to trust them the doctor often ends up being blamed for whatever happened which makes sense. I'm glad he's got more backup in this episode because the brigadier and sergeant Berton are charged with arresting the doctor but they obviously know he isn't responsible for what's happening

This is my favourite Third Doctor story as I think it balances the UNIT side of things with a story about mad scientists doing something insane for the right reasons. If anything, it's a spiritual successor to Inferno in that regard.
The reason for the black and white first episode is it simply only existed in black and white for a long time. Like the first two Doctors, the Third Doctor's era was wiped shortly after transmission. Thankfully, the film prints made for overseas sales all survived for the most part. However, a few only survived as b&w prints.
A process called chromadot recovery (or something like that) was developed to help in the recolourisation process. Sadly, the print of the first episode was too degraded to effectively achieve it properly, so it does look a bit patchy in places. The black and white episode's fine, frankly.
You're right about the dinosaurs, as the producer Barry Letts was equally annoyed and embarrassed by them over the years. That said, I think it's okay as they're not the main focus of the story itself, which is more about the effect of Whittaker's experiment than the experiment itself, if you see what I mean.
Odd that you didn't mention the spaceship subplot, as that's a key element in the story as a whole, I feel.
I've no idea what your Florana reference was, but I hope I'm still awesome!

You know, it wasn't until working on my Monster of Peladon review that I actually remembered "Oh yeah, Sarah Jane was stuck on a fake spaceship a while ago and I completely forgot about it".
      And obviously you're still awesome

I'm stealing Andrew Bowman's position now.
Invasion of the Dinosaurs Part One (or just 'Invasion') was one of the many episodes lost to the BBC's junking process back in the 70s that lost so many 60s stories. Luckily, it was found, but in black and white. Not all colour information was available to properly recolourise it, so that's why it looks so shoddy.
God, I love this story. I love season 11.

I use this serial as an example of Doctor Who's fluid continuity. I mean, literally dinosaurs in London and martial law by a "secret" international organization... and nobody ever brings it up again???? I want 15 to mention this serial... actually, maybe I don't. I loved this serial, but it's not something I'd show to a NuWho fan. You need to be in the right mindset for Classic sometimes..
I had a wild 4 weeks (backpacking in the mountains, getting back together with my on and off GF, and so much more), but I'm happy to settle back into the channel!

Happy you had a great time out in the wilderness and managed to stay safe out there.
I 100% agree with you on the fluid continuity. I was surprised in Victory of the Daleks when Matt Smith's Doctor was quizing Amy Pond on why she didn't remember any of the Dalek invasions from the first 4 series.
I never questioned it before but yeah you'd think people would pay attention and notice these things wouldn't you?

i honestly don't get the hate for the dinosaurs... i think they look kinda brilliant.
this story is an underrated classic. Yates' betrayal is such a brilliant element that really lends it a huge amount of weight. it made the baddie plan a lot more intriguing

Love invasion of the dinosaurs. Ignoring the puppets, the story and acting are top notch.
