@@Knottz The only difference between marching band and running is with running I don't wear a portable sauna (i.e. uniform) like I did when I marched. That actually has a huge impact on exertion. Me having done football my freshman and sophmore, and Drumline my Junior year and plan on continuing into my senior year, and also being part of HBCU style marching band. From my experience, football was way more difficult when it came to physically exert yourself. I am not saying Marching Band was not hard. Memorizing music, remembering sets, *CRABBING AT 180 - 200 BPM* because of newer fresh drum majors, is really hard. Then in the high step marching a simpler but longer show still took much out of me. I do agree marching band is physically demanding, and difficult, I do agree marching band is often overlooked as a sport, by many people. What really urks me though is that, in many of the marching band students in my band, will claim it is more demanding, or harder than other sports, yes memorizing, and marching at different speeds is tough, it is hard, i get it, i have experienced the same as you have(Bass Drum, and Tenor Player) but things with football, you get hit harder than you will ever get hit, you run up and down the field, only to get stopped right before the great feeling of a touch down, you may not be memorizing music, and sets, but you are memorizing game changing plays, that could win the game. Practices may be shorter, but a hot practice in pads will make it feel ten times hotter(but i guessed that helped me, getting used to sweating with the drum on, because even though the harness is different than pads, you are still sweating like a bitch) and I could continue. But at the end of the day, I am trying to say, though I would say marching band could be a sport, I just get bugged with the people at my school, remember *PEOPLE AT MY SCHOOL, NOT THE GUY WHO MADE THE VIDEO, I AM NOT TALKING ABOUT HIM* just go out and say "Marching band is far harder, than(insert sport here)," Well I hope you get what I am trying to say. *(I WONDER WHO WILL ACTUALLY READ ALL OF THIS)*
Pine To The Cone I get marching Band might not be a sport now, but DCI and color guard definitely should be a sport. DCI is like Marching band, but harder. A lot harder musics to memorize and huge amount of endurance, plus 12 hours of practice almost everyday.
I had a football coach say it was a sport lol. A boy call band gay and the couch said shut up water boy the band aids do more then u lol the boy said well band is stupid I told him anything you can't do is stupid then I said o what's that Menes being smart is stupid lol
Blue Wind you shouldn’t be calling people stupid when you can’t even spell. You spelt couch when trying to spell coach, you spelt aids when trying to spell aides, you spelt “o” I’m not even sure what you were trying to say, and my guessing you were trying to spell means and you spelt “menes” maybe before you call people stupid you should make sure that you can spell first.
not up there with foot ball at all. There is a difference between marching for 12 hours a weekend vs slamming your physical body against a person for 4 hours strait.
At my school, I use the argument that you can "letter" in marching band so technically it is considered a sport, also there are lots of people who have never tried marching band and I feel that at my school, marching band earns way more trophies in a year than any of the other sports have won in multiple years.
At our school the letter jacked is a different color for marching band than it is for actual sports because they realize marching band isn't on the same level as any other sport. Band kids just petitioned for it so they had to let the kids letter. Marching band is in no way, shape, or form a sport. Sorry if I hurt your feelings but it's the truth. Also please don't use the argument that "try carrying a tuba across a field". That literally means nothing, I agree the tuba might be heavy but just because the equipment is heavy doesn't make it a sport. Like if all football was just walking around in pads. It wouldn't be a sport just because the pads can weigh down on you.....anyway good luck with marching band. Sorry if I come off as mean I'm not trying to be. Good luck and we all have our opinions.
JCon Im just saying that at least in my school I know that our tubas had to jazz run and we do a lot of dance and visuals and as a guard member I think that if cheer and dance are now considered a sport marching band should be too. Also, we don't walk we march, and yes, there is a huge difference.
If you don’t think it takes effort, you don’t understand how hard it is to march with perfect posture while staying in time and playing memorized music while remembering your movements at the same time If you don’t think there physical exertion you’ve never held a percussion instrument, or sousaphone, or a marching baritone/euphonium, or ran the same show over and over for hours at rehearsal, or seen color guard, or marched in general tbh. And you’ve especially never seen DCI or an angry band director during band camp who likes to make you stand at attention for 12 years. If you don’t think there’s contact you’ve never seen a judge fall victim to bring trampled by the band, or stood close to color guard while it was windy ;) If you think it’s not competitive in any way then... look it up damn If you decide to make your own definition for a sport then you can say it’s not, but if not there’s no reason marching band can’t be a sport. If bowling is a damn sport then so is band 😂
Last year, I wrote a 10-page paper supporting the argument that the marching arts are real sports for my Social and Cultural History of Sports. When I pitched the idea to my professor, he turned it into a class discussion. I mostly referenced drum corps after marching two years with 7th Regiment, but I was able to support other points with facts and data. Got an A.
Dude you are awesome. You're videos have inspired me to further my marching career through college and I'm only a freshman in high school. I joined marching band and 8th grade and I love it so much but I didn't think that it was something that I wanted to do throughout college. You have inspired me to think about going to the Cadets 2 camp. THANK YOU SO MUCH!
the one thing that absolutely pisses me off about marching is the judging. we all worked out butts off trying to put together our show wicked, yet the judges gave us bad scores simply because, "I didn't like your music/show". like pls stfu I would love to see you try this
i’m not gay that’s what happens in a sport. People want to be saying it’s a sport but can’t deal with the loss. It’s like feminists, they want equal rights but can’t deal with the equal fights
I was in marching band for the first two years of high school (best years of my life) but I had a gym teacher who didn’t believe me when I told him that marching band should count as a sport. If only he knew what we did for 36 hours (and yes, I calculated that. No, I’m not exaggerating) every week.
I am in the color guard, and I think color guard is definetly a sport. I do also think that marching band is a sport too because we all use physical exertion. I am currently trying to get us gym exemptions. Tips? I NEED HELP
you could start a petition, but marching band (and guard is apart of the band unless your school is weird) usually counts for p.e. credits in most schools. you could also write a formal letter to administration, stating how band/guard requires more physical exertion than several of the "sports" at public schools have
A sport is a competitive activity which involves physical exertion. I am in marching band and March baritone and I can definitely say that it is exhausting and we are going to the grand nationals in Indianapolis which is very competitive with a grading system. Now if you argue that band is not a sport then why is golf a sport? If you can consider golf a sport then marching band is way up , go Harrison band
I think that marching band is a sport. The people who say it is not a sport have only seen us at halftime and not at practice. I am making a powerpoint on why it is a sport.
Marching band is a sport, and sometimes is much harder than many others. I understand how lots of people wouldn't think so cause they haven't even tried it, my marching band this year have very fast tempos and slow tempos. So Yes, this is a sport. It requires a physical, you have to have the strength to control what you legs do, not only do you have to marching a certain beat but you also have to memorize music so it's very difficult as well. If you don't agree, then you try it THEN tell me it's not a sport. Honestly it's your opinion though but I gotta tell you, opinions aren't facts so that doesn'tran you're right :)
hey calm down I didn't say cheer wasn't a sport or easy. I know it's also competitive and dangerous. I'm saying that of all things at least Drumcorps should be a sport. it has dedicated groups that are not from any colleges or schools. Cheerleading does not have it's own teams. that's not to say it's better or worse.
HI!! I am a GA STATE MOM!!! My son is a Frosh at GA STATE!! So Proud that you represent!!! Have followed you for a couple of years now and always look forward to your very entertaining videos!!!
Yes. you can have a good band and a bad man. You can have a good football team and a bad football team. All teams and groups in all sports are at different levels. You can have a soccer team that does nothing but hang out and barely practice, but the sport itself at a professional level is outstanding. You can have a band that goes all out all the time. Or drum corps. And that activity at a professional level is also outstanding. regular people know about the NFL, or the MLB, or the NBA, or FIFA, but not DCI or DCA. They're not advertised or televised like other sports.
I just say that it's a performing art just for simplicity reasons, but my school considers it a varsity sport. Also I get community service hours out of it apparently.
I usually ignore people when they tell me that marching band isn't hard well id love to see you jazz run with a contra and say it's not physical but I understand where both sides comes from and mainly agree with both and awesome video man your vids always cheer me up and can't wait for dci 2015 in 2 mins
RIP... Those instruments! Do people know how much those repairs can cost! Funny and great educational video, it really got me thinking about whether it is a sport, and why it matters. We usually just argue about it with other sports at our school, without really thinking if it is really that big of a deal
It's definitely a sport, I'm only in an English drum corps called 'Liberty' and we only have about 35 members so we don't rehearse any where near as much as as Top corps from DCI, but it is still physically demanding, but at the same time, it is so fun and i get such an adrenaline rush when i perform, and that is the point of Drum Corps, to have fun and compete. But it is definitely a sport.
I wouldn't care about if marching band were considered a sport at all, EXCEPT It matters to me because I'm in high school, and marching band is an enormous commitment. It doesn't count as a "sport" and I don't have the time for sports. Anything I'm interested falls in either the autumn or the spring, and I can't do anything in the spring, or I'll get sick from my pollen allergies. I don't want the fact that I can't/won't do a sport because I don't want to, to impact my chances of getting anywhere I want to. A friend of mine got refused from MIT because he didn't have a sport. I don't want something like that to stop me or anyone else, but I don't want to give marching band up, I'd rather die :P So that's why I think a lot of people argue about marching band being a sport. Otherwise, I couldn't care less about it being a sport because it's awesome, and being called a marching artist sounds pretty badass.
A couple of years ago, I boldly advocated for a top Corps in that I felt they deserved to be treated as athletes and should follow an athletes diet. The rigors that all Corps members go through in preparation, and during the competition season certainly makes them elite athletes. Throw in less than desirable sleeping and resting accommodations such as riding on a bus from venue to venue, and all of the other nuances that makes up the Drum Corps Season, I am in awe of all individuals that endure a Drum Corps Season!!! The best part is,,,,Corps members do not see it as enduring it!!!.
Marching band is a sport we might not be running or hitting people but look at how much time and effort goes into learning the drills and memorizing the songs and even playing on the field especially if your uniforms make you sweat in 50 degree weather
I personally believe a sport is something that has an objective winner: that means no judges or opinions involved. So under my own personal definition, the marching art's aren't a sport. But I do believe that it's a very athletic activity nonetheless. This is why DCI describes itself as an "activity".
This has always been my standpoint. A sport has a specific method of scoring, like touchdowns, a triple bogey, or a home run. The marching arts are subjective to the reception of the judge and crowd! Nonetheless, all sports and athletic activities take lots of skill, and we should just appreciate talent when we see it rather than judging everyone for it.
I could definitely disagree with the whole "subjectivity" part of why some people don't call marching arts a sport. Gymnastics, as a whole, have panels of judges in every event. People aren't debating if gymnastics are a sport (hopefully) as they are one of the (28, I think) sports in the Olympic program. Definitely takes a ton of physical exertion(yes, I know that is subjective, but still), it takes a lot of time and effort to perfect the craft and compete at the world stage(same with drum corps). It's pretty much comes down to that a lot of people just don't know what it takes to compete at that high level in the marching arts and people don't consider that because it isn't that well known, and that's a darn shame.
+Vidal Rodriguez That's a fantastic argument... if I considered gymnastics a sport, rather than an extremely highly athletic activity. And the Olympics has ball dancing lol. If its in the Olympics, I don't think that automatically qualifies it as a sport. A more productive debate to have: should the marching arts be in the Olympics? :0
+Nathan Weisser Well that's where the other part of my "marching arts not being as well known as other activites" comes into that, because there are certain requirements in becoming an Olympic sport in the scope of how global that activity is. Even some very global sports like baseball and cricket aren't even in the Olympics, because there's only so much you can do in one month, considering how long those games take. That doesn't negate those sports from being sports, they're just not as fully global and widespread as some of the many major ones.
+Nathan Weisser The first step in doing so, which in my opinion would be the hardest thing DCI would have to do would be to diversify; especially in the regard that Drum Corps match on an AMERICAN football field. American football has nowhere near the reach that Olympic sports have globally, so that would be the first barrier the marching arts have in expanding their global reach, as this activity is uniquely American. If they in the future get the activity up to the Olympic requirements, some how, it would be in a group also in consideration trying to get into a pretty rigid Olympic program. They would also more than likely be viewed as contreversial/maybe revolutionary in their bid to become an Olympic sport. The IOC committee in charge would probably turn that bid down
Marching band is definitely a sport. Ive been in marching band for 3 years and it is lots of hard work. It involves the correct technique while playing the right notes and having it memorized. Also u go to band camp for 3 days and then play in parades and compete against other marching bands. So yes it is definitely a sport.
The thing about marching band is we work for months perfecting a show that lasts 8 and a half minutes each performance is a big deal if someone has a bad 20 seconds the whole band could be thrown off if someone gets confused on the next move you can't just call a time out and get clarification the band gets 8 or 9 minutes to showcase what we have been working on for hundreds of hours we don't get 4 quarters 9 innings or 2 halves we have minutes if you fall and get hurt you can't stop and put in a replacement you get up and keep going and talk about physically taxing the band does so much work it may look like we are just walking and playing but it is really so much more at my school the band does more work than the football team (and other "real sports")
Most high school marching band are just there for halftime entertainment and usually the tempo is a walking speed My high school marching band show tempo 168 with a ton of choreography and we practice more than the football team
Having done “traditional” sports at the national level, as well as BOA, WGI World Class, and DCI div. I, I can definitely say that the marching arts are a sport. Cheerleading, figure staking, freestyle ski/snowboard, and gymnastics are sports. All of which are one team/performer at a time being judged by officials, and there’s no defense. Therefore, marching fits the criteria of all these other “sports”.
I like to call it an athletic competition. I don't quite see it as a sport. simply because when I think of sports, I think of things with specific point systems like crossing the finish line first, scoring a goal, or hitting the ball within the lines. if something is judged, I consider it a competition, however, I don't want people to think it's easy, because it's not, hence the athletic in athletic competition.
When people say marching band doesn't have physical exertion clearly they haven't even tried to pick up the 5th Bass Drum and definitely haven't marched 6 miles with it (the Rose Parade).
As a high schooler in a marching band, I can safely say that some high school bands have shows that are difficult and physically demanding, only topped by certain DCI shows. College band is for more entertainment for the football teams (unless they compete) but the high school band I'm in has drill that is really close to DCI drill. Of course, this is coming from a Timpani player who gets to sit down, so what do I know?
We were running through our opener for the first eight sets and one of our color guard members hit under my saxophone when I was playing it and made my lip bleed, and one of the other saxophones got hit in the head with a flag not once, but twice! Oh, the things we do for band XD
Is it possible for you to do an "all about the snare, tenors, bass?" You did an "all about the mello, trumpet, bari/euph, contra" but not a drumline one. So suggesting maybe a drumline video feat. GSU drumline?
My school actually does do an all for 1 competition called the march off where the directors yell out different marching techniques we have to do, and I’ve won it twice now
Ok I love marching band and it's definitely very physically active but the difference between performance art and sports is in sports the winner is determined by the actions of the players but in performance arts it's determined by a panel of judges
I consider it a sport. It is a performance and people want to be entertained, and it's judged opposed to having a strict scoring system (ball in hoop, crossing the line first), but gymnastics is an Olympic sport that I guess the scoring would be comparable. Also ice skating (dancing?) is a performing sport that's in the Olympics, too.
Marching band is a sport because you have practice, work as hard(maybe even harder), and are in competition. Sports normally have trophies and marching band definitely has trophies. Also, you don’t just walk in marching band. You step off with your left foot and have to make sure you put your foot down right. You also cannot be staring at the ground. Then, you have to hold an instrument(some more heavy than others) that even most athletes can’t even hold.
At my high school, if you are in band, you have to do marching band your freshman year. And my current middle school is the only middle school that marches in our county.
I see it from both sides (tuba in a competitive hs band+soccer goalie) I think it lies in the core values. hockey, win game's. marching band, entertainment. and for all u who say that football players should try band. U try football
I always think of ice skating when I explain to someone marching band is a sport. It's the same idea of preparing a show then performing it for a score and can have it be entertainment. I have never marched dci but all of our staff did at my school, so we try to rehearse and perform like one... its hard af
Lol, our school board offered to classify marching band as a sport but the directors said no because sports have legal limits of practice time, but as a club they can make us practice almost twice as much XD
marching is hard, at my school we practice outside for a week for 6/5 hours, the rest of the weeks is 3 hours outside and 3 hours inside, we have to do workouts and we get injured and pass out a lot because we get one break for each day
In my opinion, high school and sometimes college marching bands aren’t really under sport because of the lack of physically demanding activities (and yes I am in marching band) and yes it requires to physically be capable to march under the heat with uniforms that trap heat but not as demanding as ‘pop culture’ sports. On the other hand, groups who compete or are part of things like DCI, I consider a sport because it’s another level of physical activity that is necessary and is much more demanding than HS marching band. But I agree, it’s not about the label it’s about the experience :)
one thing that makes me glad we're not a sport is where I live band camp would be against the rules and we would have to have physicals and all that which takes up time. but I would say we are athletes definitely
I mean, the marching arts can be a contact sport.
If a judge gets in your way that is.
+RCM1829 The judge I kicked mid visual two yrs ago can agree to that statement
What if you hit yourself with your instrument or stick?
Getting hit by a flag
it's always a contact sport for a Guardie heaven knows we hit ourselves enough!

Or a wayyyy too aggressive horns up. When they said, "snap it" I don't think a noise was supposed to ensue... oops
"Marching Band doesn't take a lot of effort" lol ask the color guard. They might stab you with a saber if you keep talking
Or just smack you in the face with our flags! XD
I'm part of the guard, and I'm ready to impale any one with my flag, saber, or rifle at any time.
I've had a colorguard hit my Trombone Slide while we were marching
You hella stupid
I’m open to that😂

All of this coming from a guy who wrote a run-on sentence as his argument. Shame, sir. Shame.
James Bargar that was a nice one😂😂
huh?????
Marching band is definentley a sport. Especially drumline. It's up there with football. You work your ass off.
And sousa/contra!
+54321blader Yup!
no it's not a sport. It requires a lot of physical work and effort, but it is not a sport.
not up there with foot ball at all. There is a difference between marching for 12 hours a weekend vs slamming your physical body against a person for 4 hours strait.
and yes im in marching band and We wond Nationals this year and I still don't think its a sport
Also, we don't walk we march, and yes, there is a huge difference.

matching bands do have one winner in competitions

Yes
I personally think marching band is a sport, those who say its not, from my experience, have either never tried it or quit before band camp started.
If you don’t think it takes effort, you don’t understand how hard it is to march with perfect posture while staying in time and playing memorized music while remembering your movements at the same time
If you don’t think there physical exertion you’ve never held a percussion instrument, or sousaphone, or a marching baritone/euphonium, or ran the same show over and over for hours at rehearsal, or seen color guard, or marched in general tbh. And you’ve especially never seen DCI or an angry band director during band camp who likes to make you stand at attention for 12 years.
If you don’t think there’s contact you’ve never seen a judge fall victim to bring trampled by the band, or stood close to color guard while it was windy ;)
If you think it’s not competitive in any way then... look it up damn
If you decide to make your own definition for a sport then you can say it’s not, but if not there’s no reason marching band can’t be a sport.
If skiing is a sport, marching band is a sport.
Tbh I agree with you. It shouldn't really matter.
the one thing that absolutely pisses me off about marching is the judging. we all worked out butts off trying to put together our show wicked, yet the judges gave us bad scores simply because, "I didn't like your music/show". like pls stfu I would love to see you try this
+Bottle Of Vodka my band didn't make it to state this year because the judge ranked us low since we're a core style band
i’m not gay that’s what happens in a sport. People want to be saying it’s a sport but can’t deal with the loss. It’s like feminists, they want equal rights but can’t deal with the equal fights
Ivan Angeles how does that happen in other sports?? when are there judges in other sports???
@Ivan Angeles, I don’t think you understand marching band or feminism. You are just talking crap about things you know nothing of.
I was in marching band for the first two years of high school (best years of my life) but I had a gym teacher who didn’t believe me when I told him that marching band should count as a sport. If only he knew what we did for 36 hours (and yes, I calculated that. No, I’m not exaggerating) every week.
“Marching band doesn’t require physical exe-“ *drops tenor drums on the person’s head*
I am in the color guard, and I think color guard is definetly a sport. I do also think that marching band is a sport too because we all use physical exertion. I am currently trying to get us gym exemptions. Tips? I NEED HELP
you could start a petition, but marching band (and guard is apart of the band unless your school is weird) usually counts for p.e. credits in most schools.
you could also write a formal letter to administration, stating how band/guard requires more physical exertion than several of the "sports" at public schools have
Kristina Sullivan color guard can be compared to dancing
Hey at least EVERYONE participates in marching band. We don’t and can’t ever sit on the bench like football 🤣
To be fair, no one really says golf is a sport
Chops lol
I call it a competitive art
So a sport lmao
Honestly it's your opinion though but I gotta tell you, opinions aren't facts so that doesn'tran you're right :)
its not a sport
and yes im in marching band and we won nats this year and I still dont think its a sport
Hispanic Genuis10 Carmel high lol I was there in the back with the Tubas
but now Cheer is a freakn sport and marching band still isn't
freaking* band*
Max Ramos fuck you
hey calm down I didn't say cheer wasn't a sport or easy. I know it's also competitive and dangerous. I'm saying that of all things at least Drumcorps should be a sport. it has dedicated groups that are not from any colleges or schools. Cheerleading does not have it's own teams. that's not to say it's better or worse.
Max Ramos Cheer is really hard from what I see. And so is marching band, so they both are.
Give me a B!!!! Give me and S!!! What's that spell!? BS 😂
HI!! I am a GA STATE MOM!!! My son is a Frosh at GA STATE!! So Proud that you represent!!! Have followed you for a couple of years now and always look forward to your very entertaining videos!!!
I’m gonna leave the argument with this...
GOLF
I am trying to cope with the fact that in two years I have to leave marching band ;-; Help me...
Yes. you can have a good band and a bad man.
ANY CLARINET FAM HERE!

I march alto sax, but I play clarinet
I like your attitude about how you love marching band so why does it matter if others think it is a sport or not
Bruh anyone who has marched quads knows how physical marching is. Drum Core or high school
"Marching band isn't hard"
"I am devolving joint problems at the age of 16 because of band"
"okay maybe is hard"
DCI should be considered a sport, but high school marching band... It depends lol
When i pulled up the rifel i wheezed. My Color guard ppl where u at 😂
It's definitely a sport, I'm only in an English drum corps called 'Liberty' and we only have about 35 members so we don't rehearse any where near as much as as Top corps from DCI, but it is still physically demanding, but at the same time, it is so fun and i get such an adrenaline rush when i perform, and that is the point of Drum Corps, to have fun and compete. But it is definitely a sport.
I wouldn't care about if marching band were considered a sport at all, EXCEPT
It matters to me because I'm in high school, and marching band is an enormous commitment.
I've been waiting for a video to quell this debate for a long time! Awesome video!!
Water. PLEASE GIVE ME WATER
Gush and go 😭
When your literally 5 1, playing mapex tenors its a damn sport.
Tenor gang rise up bois
Chess is a sport. Let that sink in.
The IOC committee in charge would probably turn that bid down
That High school musical allusion!
We missed you man, welcome back :)
1v1 marching contests, two bands on the field at once, whoever scores better wins, a set amount of judges per band
Marching band is definitely a sport. Ive been in marching band for 3 years and it is lots of hard work. It involves the correct technique while playing the right notes and having it memorized. Also u go to band camp for 3 days and then play in parades and compete against other marching bands. So yes it is definitely a sport.
So glad to see a new video of you David!
WGI: "Sport of The Arts"
The thing about marching band is we work for months perfecting a show that lasts 8 and a half minutes each performance is a big deal if someone has a bad 20 seconds the whole band could be thrown off if someone gets confused on the next move you can't just call a time out and get clarification the band gets 8 or 9 minutes to showcase what we have been working on for hundreds of hours we don't get 4 quarters 9 innings or 2 halves we have minutes if you fall and get hurt you can't stop and put in a replacement you get up and keep going and talk about physically taxing the band does so much work it may look like we are just walking and playing but it is really so much more at my school the band does more work than the football team (and other "real sports")
if curling is in the freaking olimpics than marching band is definetly
Cuz playing quads isn’t demanding enough
If gaming is a sport so is playing an instrument
Dolphin-itly is a sport. Really liking the videos. 🔥
Great Video! I loved the statement at the end where you say it doesn't matter if it is or not and it shouldn't affect your experience :)
Hi Dylan! :)
If video games are a sport then marching band is a sport
Most high school marching band are just there for halftime entertainment and usually the tempo is a walking speed
My high school marching band show tempo 168 with a ton of choreography and we practice more than the football team
If it was a contact sport the Bass Clarinets would be knocking everyone out. Hell, the knock themselves out sometimes. 😂
Euphs would win I think
+Brady Wood the drumline would obviously win
Blanche i play bass clarinet and it hurts to get hit by one!!
High school marching band is ehhh. But college marching band should definitely qualify as a sport. The stuff you have to do is a pain.
I gave up on the sports argument a long time ago, but damn, do I miss marching.
STARTING MY FIRST SEASON OF DCA FOR 2016 WOOOOOOO.
My definition of a sport is any competition that one can get physical injured in
At Halftime I don't treat it as entertainment I treat it as a bathroom break
What about boa Atlant regional...i saw you there and met at retreat :)-some random tarpon kid
+Rob Mackenzie That'll be coming soon too! :)
the band I'm in got 14th in Atlanta this year. so close to finals.
#sleep
We're going to Grand Nationals at Indianapolis in a few days, so we're gonna see all the big 4A bands in our class
+noah sweeney mine got 6th went to finals and going to state (FL)
+Rob Mackenzie lol hey tarpon kid, has Chris Turner mentioned anything about West Carteret?
My school actually does do an all for 1 competition called the march off where the directors yell out different marching techniques we have to do, and I’ve won it twice now
Ok I love marching band and it's definitely very physically active but the difference between performance art and sports is in sports the winner is determined by the actions of the players but in performance arts it's determined by a panel of judges
Even chess is a sport
Do you know Casey Cooper?
+austin morphew Yup! He's graduated now but I've met him a few times, awesome guy!
Marching band is hard ... Watch us at band camp.
I see it from both sides (tuba in a competitive hs band+soccer goalie) I think it lies in the core values. hockey, win game's. marching band, entertainment. and for all u who say that football players should try band. U try football
Yes you do go head to head with another group, It's called marching band competitions. And there are judges
When someone says marching band isn't physical I just show them that video phantom regiment jazz running across the field while playing firebird
I always think of ice skating when I explain to someone marching band is a sport. It's the same idea of preparing a show then performing it for a score and can have it be entertainment. I have never marched dci but all of our staff did at my school, so we try to rehearse and perform like one... its hard af
It’s not a sport, it’s art and talent put on the field. It’s amazing. It’s sorta a sport though. (I’m in band and my dad’s a band director)
Lol, our school board offered to classify marching band as a sport but the directors said no because sports have legal limits of practice time, but as a club they can make us practice almost twice as much XD
marching is hard, at my school we practice outside for a week for 6/5 hours, the rest of the weeks is 3 hours outside and 3 hours inside, we have to do workouts and we get injured and pass out a lot because we get one break for each day
Hey if it counts as a PE credit at my high school then I consider it a sport
Hey man glad to see you making videos keep up the good work
At the end when the high brass was holding it a different style 😂
Sorry but it totally matters if people know it as a sport or not and for me it definitely changes me on the field
