Quartz or Diamond, I live the gem either way. Its so incredibly gorgeous. I would live to have a nice Tiffany diamond/pink-star ring for my lonely ring finger. Its still the most beautiful along with black Opal. Just love this planet man, so many wonders blow my mind. We are all so lucky to be on this amazing planet...

Now to the other ridiculously missed stones. Emerald, up to $50,000 a carat. Padparadscha Sapphire up to $20,000 a carat. Blue Sapphire. The best Kashmir Blue Sapphires have sold up to $200,000 a carat at auction. Other color varieties of top color Sapphire can go to $10,000 a carat in large sizes. Rubies (Burma) have sold for well over a 1,000,000 a carat at auction. Where does this person get the value on Black Opal??? The best Lightning Ridge Black Opal can for as hi as $50,000 a carat. Wow...shaking my head.

It don't sparkle, the color is odd...can't make jewelry from it...
Expensive:
Diamonds are harvested by the ton, sorted by the pound, polished by the ounce and sold by the carat.
The only thing that makes them expensive is the artificial price set by the producer.
Outside of grinding ceramics or cutting tough metals, diamonds have no demonstrated 'value' in industry.
Valuable:
Aluminum, the 3rd most common element in earths crust, is valuable enough to recycle.

This is what I don't understand about gems: are they expensive simply because they're rare? I mean, nobody will ever do nothing with them, just store inside some fancy box, and that's it? I know some of them, like diamonds, have actually practical uses, but what about the others?

I got an even *rarer* variety of red beryl called Pezzottaite. It is differentiated from bixbite by having cesium in its formula. It was found on one mountain in Madagascar and is all mined out. While my piece has several inclusions, it is clear enough to be faceted. Mine weighs about 6 carats and is about 1.5 cm on all sides. Based on what I'm seeing on Ebay it is probably worth around $500.
