  • Worn shaft keyways can be repaired using Belzona 1111 (Super Metal). Keyways become worn and oversized due to constant pressure from starting and stopping, causing vibration, misalignment and stress on couplings. Belzona #epoxy composite materials are designed to repair and prevent these common failures to mechanical power transmission equipment. Using a new key as a former, a perfect zero-tolerance fit is created. This simple repair saves time and money, while quickly returning the equipment to operation. In this video, we demonstrate to you how you can rebuild an oversized keyway with Belzona 1111.

    Materials used:
To carry out an #oversizedkeywayrepair, we used Belzona 1111 (Super Metal), a new key, Belzona 9111 (Cleaner/Degreaser), Belzona 9411 (Release Agent)
    How to Guide:
Step 1: Condition all sides of the key with Belzona 9411 (Release Agent).
Step 2: Prepare the surface using a file to remove sharp edges and protrusions.
Step 3: Roughen and score the inside of the keyway.
Step 4: Clean and degrease the keyway to remove all surface contaminants.
Step 5: Tape the repair area.
Step 6: Mix #Belzona1111 until a uniform color, free of any streakiness, is achieved.
Step 7: Apply the mixed material directly onto the prepared surface of the keyway, pressing down firmly to ensure maximum contact with the surface.
Step 8: Fill in the keyway with the mixed product.
    Step 9: Remove excess product.
Step 10: Position the key over the applied product and press down firmly to allow the excess product to exude.

    Step 12: Release key.
Step 13: Smooth out the surface with an emery cloth.

How long does it need to be set up before the keyway is removed? Also, what kind of liquid is used to clean the scored area prior to application of the mixed 1111?

Thank you for your question! We recommend a full mechanical cure before the equipment is put back to service. Please refer to the Manufacturer's Instruction for Use for specific cure times at certain operating temperatures. www.belzona.com/viewfile.aspx?id=51037 Additionally, Belzona 9111 (Cleaner/Degreaser) was used to clean the repair surface. Please feel free to let us know should you have any other questions or contact your local Belzona representative: www.belzona.com/en/contact.aspx Best regards, Belzona Team

I know it's hard to believe an epoxy solution could be capable of the intense industrial work we set it to however, over seventy years of developing solutions for industry we've proven their capabilities.
