Decided to put up a quick little breakdown of this version of Little Maggie. Pretty interesting how Ralph approached this in this early version with his brother Carter as the Stanley Brothers! Have had a lot of questions about this tune and I figure this is probably the most interesting version to break down and show on here since there seems to be alot of learning material available for this old song anyway. Hopefully it helps anybody interested in this old tune!👍
When I close my eyes I really hear Ralph playing it - SUPER JOB! And with your other great video . . . all the options are covered!!!! And this was the BEST version in my view, I like that modal sound.
THANKS THANKS! That is my FAVORITE version, and I also think it sounds more modal than his later versions. What I ESPECIALLY thank you for is the great breakdown of the fingering. I was never getting my version to sound quite right, and I see a few mistakes I was making. Just tried the first couple of sections with your fingering -- ok, Ralph's fingering! - and that really sounds better. When I close my eyes with you playing, it sure sounds like Ralph to me! THANKS AGAIN FROM SWITZERLAND!!!!
The arch top tone ring is a must for the Ralph sound! You are a monster player, do you think it will be difficult to play Stanley style when I have learned to play Scruggs style and lead with the thumb? Ralph’s playing and rolls had a certain bounce when he played because I believe he played the index lead? Regardless brilliant picking from yourself! Love the bow tie inlay by the way
I’m not so sure that without Scruggs we would have Ralph’s 3 finger style. If you listen to early Ralph you can tell he was listening to and studying what Scruggs was doing. Ralph even stated in his book that him and Earl rode in the back seat of a car a many a mile picking the banjo together, and that Earl showed him some of what was going on with his style. Ralph said that Earl made him decide to switch to 3 fingers. So no, I don’t think you learning Scruggs style first will hold you back at all… it might even help you to understand where Ralph was coming from. But, you will notice as you get into Ralph’s playing that in his later years his style became more settled… I often think of Ralph’s early 3 finger as essentially his own spin on Scruggs’ style… in that he took what Earl was doing and developed his style his own way… then later on he really developed his own signature trademarks within banjo picking! Thank you for listening!👍
The starday/ king years. Ralph at his best. You nailed it as usual!
Thank you Gary!👍

Во всех роликах слишком много болтовни , неплохо было бы побольше времени уделять практическим показам игры , и поменьше болтать .
