As a Midwestern gentile kid, I totally identified with Alan Sherman and Mad Magazine. Go figure. I memorized all of Alan's material and would spout it at any inappropriate occasion: Looking for attention? Who, me?
Same story here. Raised on a farm in Indiana, loved Allan Sherman and ferschlugginer Mad Magazine. I ended up marrying a (culturally) Jewish woman. Listening to these songs again is too much fun.
Barely remember hearing Sherman (and the Beatles, remember them?) on my Mom's radio when I was in preschool in the 60s. I heard Sherman on Dr, Demento in college and grabbed all his LPs (most of them, anyway!) at used stores. He is brilliant. Savvy, witty and wise about the pop culture of the era. The songs still make me laugh and smile!
I had a childhood friend, my 1st real friend in CA, whose Dad has this record. We must have listened to the album several thousand times. I found these songs several years ago and are good memories!
@@NatandGeorge There are three books, one is a sort of autobiography called "A Gift of Laughter: The Autobiography of Allan Sherman", then there's this sort of weird one called "The Rape of the A*P*E* - The Official History of the Sex Revolution 1945 - 1973"; and then the more recent book called "Overweight Sensation" by Mark Cohen.
Sorry for the delay in replying, I was traveling. Yes, Sherman died of a heart attack in November 1973, when he was just shy of turning 49. The whole story is in my Sherman biography, Overweight Sensation: The Life and Comedy of Allan Sherman (Brandeis U. Press, 2013). Best, Mark

I grew up listening to The Dr. Demento radio show and he used to play a lot of Allen Sherman. Great memories. He and Mel Brooks are responsible for my sense of humor. :)
This is marvelous, Mark. I was a fan of Allan from the time his first album came out until he died. I have always written parody songs as a hobby myself, and even performed some in local comedy clubs in Virginia Beach. I still have a collection of his albums in monaural high fidelity - not even stereo. Nothing to play them on, though.
Thanks for posting these. We had all the records when I was a kid so I am sharing with my parents, who still don’t quite “get” RUclips but loved Sherman! I’m enjoying them too. He was like a Borscht Belt Randy Rainbow.
Can't remember exactly how we got them - My Son The Folk Singer & My Son The Celebrity became a go to for me to occupy my time and do something fun from time to time. Back when having a turn table was a common thing.
Now I know where Die Fantastischen Vier found the idea for their 1999 song „MfG - Mit freundlichen Grüßen“ many years back! The original is brilliant as well 🥰❤️
I listened gleefully to Allan Shermans records as a young boy. While reading MAD magazines..... Is it any wonder Im a twisted, sarcastic old(er) man now? And is it just me, or could Kevin James (The King of Queens) be Allan Shermans offspring?...the resemblance is uncanny.
I learned a lot of the old classic songs because Allan Sherman did parodies of them. Check out "I'm In the Mood for Love". Original first, then Allan's version.
Just thought of this song because of the new couple across the street. Why? Because I’ll never forget my high school homeroom teacher used to play it in ‘68. Now I know why 😅!

I just idolized Allen Sherman when I was a little kid.I didn't understand half of what he was singing about, but I loved parody like "Mad" magazine. My dad took me to visit his workplace(a federal building where he was a lawyer), and we bumped into a colleague of his who was fat and wore glasses.Right afterward, I said "He looks like Allen Sherman", and my dad laughed and said "Don't tell him that!" I was heartbroken when he died, and I knew he'd fallen off the radar. He died of a heart attack?
Not sure what obit you're looking at, but I have his death certificate. Cause was "cardio respiratory arrest." He had emphysema for years before his death.

For years in my youth when the Jewish sang Hava Nagila I thought they were singing Harvey and Sheila. I still sing it when I hear Hava Nagila.
🤣😅😂

Jewish success story. That reminds me of my parents. I grew up listening to his songs and have them all memorized.
Allan Sherman was the absolute best at song parodies, and Tom Lehrer was his equal at original songs. What gifts they both had!
they are still the best ever!!!!!!

For me it was Dr. Demento and (like others here) MAD magazine.
Thanks for the post. Came here after hearing part of this on the PBS showing of Hava Nagila -The Movie, a history of the song.
My childhood. My brothers were into Firesign Theater and I was over here with Allan.

To do this song in the harmony of a Hora/Hava Nagila is genius.👍🏻😂
