Time ago I use to flight in hang glider, but I decided to change to gliders. With videos like this I feel the temptation to reconsider that decision. Absolute gorgeous!!!........
Check out the pilot spirits that kept us company at 39:50 - white top wing + faster wee red wing below your left base bar bracket, both heading south. Can see your glory at 40:10 too, Chris. What a gift that day was in do many respects. ^_^
Absolutely stunning footage! What was your peak altitude and what were you thinking when the clouds filled in? I imagine you always had an out in mind that we are unaware of. Wow. Cool stuff!
+jtsquid I appreciate that you presumed I had a plan and an out. I have to confess, there were moments of concern. It was all good after 37:50. Though it looks like there were moments of white out after, especially as I moved back towards the Funston launch, I could see the ground the entire time. But before 37:30... a little pucker.
Best form of meditation I have ever seen. Gracefully floating over a slowly changing landscape. Beautiful. As Pacificairwave144 says,no super annoying music to break the spell. I would be nervous dropping through those clouds and meeting a glider heading the other way, however. Closing speed 60 or 70 mph?
I don't remember specifically, but in reviewing the video I think I can venture a guess. It was strongly South and pre-shear so things were a bit bumpy. I was coming up on the first of the lower cliffs and my progress was slow and I was losing altitude. I was likely concerned that if I starting encountering really trashy air I could either be landing on the beach or flying close to the lower cliffs just trying to survive. Either way, I didn't want to be dealing with my VG at that point so I loosened the wing to give a bit more maneuverability should that suddenly happen.
@@chadca , I heard so many people say that it is dangerous to fly over water on a hang glider in the event of a sudden loss of lift/thermals. Have you ever run into such situation?
Awesome flight, gorgeous views, but at around 24:00 I would be going, "Oh SHIT." What were your thoughts when all the landing zones disappeared beneath the fog? Big sigh of relief around 45:00 and fantastic landing.
+Don Saito - The "I'm concerned" moment was around 24:00, but the relief came at around 37:30. Though it may look like I lost ground reference, I could see exactly where I was for the rest of the flight. My only concern after 37:30 was to land before sunset. I actually arrived directly over the landing zone at around 43:30 and decided to fly out over the ocean with the extra altitude I still had. That being said, I didn't exercised good judgement letting the clouds close up as much as they did. I was lucky and next time I'll depart before the heavens close below me.
Christopher Carrillo Live and learn. The only Funston shear I ever caught put me up to the 2100' ceiling over Funston and it was warm and smooth as a baby's ass. I flew up to as far as Golden Gate Park and came back to land; I saw a fog roll starting to happen further south and didn't want to risk losing sight of the land. Hilariously (not at the time), I didn't notice the wind and assumed it was the usual westerly direction, but at ground level it was blowing east, *out* to sea because it was a shear (duh!) I overshot the LZ and couldn't get back up, so had to land on the beach. An ironic end to a perfect flight - I hate it when I do that ;-)
So nice not to have a damned variometer "bleep-bleep, bloop" sound (I mute most other glider videos) ruining the essence and beauty of hang gliding - the quiet solitude w/ only the wind in your ears. I've never used a vario in my 2500+ hrs of logged flight and never will; my senses have gotten me above 15K ft.

The guy with the yellow kite talks to him. Chris had a video about dos and don'ts at Funston and he mentioned how important it is to talk to people, and that the pilots there are friendly and helpful. I think you're jumping to a conclusion on a very small bit of evidence.
Sorry, it wasn't Chris's video, it was Steve's: ruclips.net/video/cWh3N8YQ44E/видео.html Still. Yellow kite pilot did talk to Chris. And this video here cuts off as he walks up to the other guys. We don't know what or if they said anything to each other.
What a beautiful video! No music, radio, or vario....just a smooth, late-day flight with magic air. Thanks for posting this!!

Is going inland looking for a hole an option with enough altitude ?
R.I.P. Chris... I flew with you on your last flight in life. I'll be forever Grateful to you for your advice when I came back fly Funston in 2019.
How did Chris pass, Kurt ?

Landed in the water flying from Funston towards Devils Slide. No bailouts ran out of choices. Something I will never do.

Damn shame
It's supposed to be fun
Like this, beside sea, I was more than 12 hours flying many years ago :)

Epic flight. Can't wait for a flight to get above the clouds in a sheer like that. Great video Chris.
Spectacular views ! A once in a lifetime!
Amazing, thank you for sharing, Christopher Carrillo.....
Wow, when I dream of the perfect flight at Funston that is it! soooo jealous.
"jealous"
That about sums it up.
Perhaps "envious", but whatever.
Thanks for the movie! Lovely!!
VERY NICE, ones of the best...congratulations.
Hey Chris, you might not know this but you are right in line with SFO departure route is 3,000' above Westlake.
Check out the pilot spirits that kept us company at 39:50 - white top wing + faster wee red wing below your left base bar bracket, both heading south.

Beautiful flying
I love the shear days. Looks like you could’ve landed in Golden Gate Park that day.
What a great landing!

Dream flight! And top landing! Amazing
Awesome flight!! Congratsss
beautiful!
37:50 Chris is doin' the " Thank You GOD!!" Lol!

It’s even scarier to imagine an aircraft appearing out of nowhere.
Glad you found your gap through the LZ.
Isn’t that almost in the flight path for international flights from SFO?
gr8 flight! perfect.
I don't understand the physics of how you gained so much height with the shear.
I dream for a flight like this :)
it's fantastic!
So quiet....must be very smooth air and low flight speed or wind noise cancellation.
so epic !!
No instruments?
Amazing fight!
best life lived.
rip cool guy
really cool. I spent a lot of time soaring there from 1975-1985 in a Fledgling 3. Thats higher than i ever flew there. what was your max alttitude?
R.I.P. Chris. This is how you end up in the ocean...
I'm thinking...wtf! I'm gettin' real nervous just thinking about being there! What if I go way out to sea?
So cool
Well ---- at around 26min I'd be going oh --oh now what. How will I get down. Like where is the LZ going to be. scary stuff.
One could easily fall asleep hanging in the air like a kite.
20:34 you are not moving ... how is that possible ???
Why the VG adjust at 6:19?

Flying can either be a drug or therapy. If you use it like a drug it can be dangerous.. fly safe and treat the wind with care

How high was that?
Yup, that’s California. The other guys couldn’t even look at him or say a word to him when he landed and walked by. Typical. 🤔
