I've been saying this for decades. I loved Last Action Hero as a kid and I love it now. With it deepening on each rewatch along the way as I matured and became more media/Arnie savvy. It really holds up.
Right! It's darn near perfect!
Same here. I've still got my VHS copy.
💯💯💯
Loved this as a kid
Yep. 88 baby here. I loved it as a kid and understood it was a parody and a love letter to his earlier work and the action genre in general. Love it more now.
We weren't ready for this movie. It was ahead of its time
Way ahead of its time. A thinking man's action flick.
My favorite character in the movie is Arnie playing himself -- anyone willing to make that kind of fun of themself is okay in my book.
But big shout-out to the villain of the movie. I love the way he's portrayed slowly realizing that the rules have changed, and his ability to react to, and exploit, this change. While leaving one chamber empty is a demonstration of his trope-busting abilities, I really love the line "No sirens? No screams?"
Benedict is a well-portrayed intelligent villain, something movies from the genre/time parodied often lacked.
“I’ve just shot somebody, and I did it on purpose.”
Brilliantly played by Charles Dance.
"here the bad guy can win" that line has stuck with me since I was a kid. It's a throwaway line but it's kind of horrifying.
He was brilliant before that. “You pulling the 360 on me?” “180.” “What?” “If I pulled the 360 I’d turn right around where I’d start- oh never mind!” Shoots him. 😂😂😂
"Get his shoes?"
Great to see the film has found his fanbase through the years. I remember loving it as a child and every time I rewatch it I’m surprised by how solidly it still holds up
I saw this opening weekend and loved all of the references, tongue in cheek jokes, Arnold making fun of himself, the action…I could go on and on. It’s still one of my all time favorite action flicks and glad they made it 😎
Last Action Hero is an amazingly good movie.
Charles Dance steals this movie.
Love him so much!
As he does with anything he's in
He was right, if god was a villain, it would be him.
And Anthony Quinn
'You do a 180. If you did a 360 you'd simply face him again you moron.'
I have 0 nostalgia for last action hero and watched it for the first time last year, and honestly, I loved it.
Not only did the soundtrack rock, the movie has always been awesome. I never understood why people took it so much like a simple action movie.
last action hero introduced me to charles dance, and ever since ive been a fan, best villain in any movie ever for me cos he was sadistic but aware
Dance is THE best villain in a little movie called "The Golden Child."
I've always loved this movie and never understood the hate.
Another 90s movie I really like that I rarely ever hear mentioned is Soldier with Kurt Russell. Gonna watch that again later today.
Agreed
Last Action Hero is a gem of a flick and in a league of its own!!
We need more movies like this!!
I've always found Last Action Hero to be a respectful, self-aware, almost sentimental deconstruction of the action movie genre, and of our relationship with movies in general. So criminally underrated. Highly quotable. Glorious cameos from juggernauts before Americans even realized their talents. What's not to love??
I’ve loved this movie for decades! It might be my favorite Arnold movie!
Most people don't get 'Last Action Hero' but I personally think its one of Arnies best most underrated movies !!
I never get bored of watching it !!
Its a kids dream come true.... LITERALLY !!
I loved that movie so much... Last action hero holds a dear place in my heart... It has everything I loved in an action and the comedy bits worked...
Last Action Hero has always been one of my favorite movies.
Nothing will ever top Arnold’s run from 1984 to 1994;
The Terminator
Commando
Predator
The Running Man
Total Recall
Terminator 2
Kindergarten Cop
Twins
Last Action Hero
True Lies
After that he went into the s*** eating phase of his career.
Some people will add 1 or 2, some will take away 1 or 2. But lets be real, the only thing that matters is yes that was his BEST time period.
I love last action hero. I've always loved Arnold Braunshwager's ability to make fun of himself. And what a great villain!
Braunschweiger* 🙄
I Loved it! Add Demolition Man, Hudson Hawk, Long kiss Goodnight, Last boy Scout and Cutthroat Island! All are greater than the reviews. And we SO want Dame Judi Dench and Arnie in Hamlet!!!
Great list
I saw this in theaters as a kid and didn't remember much about it afterward. Finally saw it again around 2005, and instantly realized how ahead of its time it was.
This movie holds a very special place for me. The last night in our old apartment, before moving from the middle of Indiana to the top of Michigan to a huge house and my best memories. My whole family, safe for my dad and I, had left that day. We were leaving in the morning, I don't remember why. There was nothing left in the place, but a few blankets and pillows and an old t.v. (this was 93-94). We could've just slept and left, but my dad wanted it to be a cool night, just him and his son. So we went out and got some dinner, and he actually stopped and rented Last Action Hero for me. He didn't have to, considering he had to rent a VCR to play it on, and it was just 1 more thing he had to do before we left... not to mention hooking it up and taking it down to return it, but he did it...for me. We watched it 2x because I was laughing so hard at his "commentary" the 1st time (he did this a lot). One of the best nights of my life and one of the last of my actual "childhood" before teenage angst got me. I'll never forget that night and what it means to me. I might not always think of it specifically, I'm 42 with a family of my own and the worries that brings in this current time in space. I love you, Pops, I miss you. Thank you.
One of my favorite movie's growing up it gets better with age and is definitely one of Arnold's underappreciated films
I loved this, I remember going to see this in 93 because I'm an arnie fan. If Jurassic Park wasn't playing at the same time as this, it would have done so much better financially. The cinema i went to had dinosaurs everywhere , jurassic Park posters everywhere, people literally lining up to buy tickets to jurassic park constantly, It was playing on multiple screens too. But you had to look hard to even find a Last action hero poster, and was only showing 4 times a day on 1 screen with the least amount of seats, it was never given a fair chance because of the behemoth that was jurassic park .
" if God was a villain... Hed be me ". !!
Just one of the great lines in Last Action Hero !!
💯 agreed!!
Wrong?
Homie, I fucking LOVE this movie.
It's a self-aware Arnie in a deliberately self-aware Arnie movie where he plays an over-the-top Arnie character in a world where Arnold Schwarzeneggar exists. It's brilliant and hilarious.
I was never wrong about this film. It was great then. It’s great now. It’s one of the best Meta films ever made with an actor at the peak of his popularity. This was amazing
I saw it in the cinema in 93. I got the dark comedy/parody even at a young age. Never realized ppl hated it, I enjoyed it lolz!
L.A.H. is one of his greatest movies!
Along with The Running Man, Predator, T2 and True Lies. IMO.
@chrisleigh8989 facts! He has a lot of good movies, hell even some of his mid tier moves are still better than most of Seagal's entire filmography.
I think the fact is, at the time, no one realised that it was a spoof of action movies, which is why it was being reviewed the way it was.
The title of the movie unintentionally caused people to think it was an action movie, when it wasn't, leading people to rate it as a bad action movie compared to Arnold's others
They misgenred it next to the other movies Arnold did, where his size is used as an opposite to the other characters (Danny Devito in Twins & The Kids in Kindergarten Cop for example) for comedic effect.
Ultimately, it is a spoof of action movies and manages to pull it off very well.
I was in film school when this came out. A bunch of us saw a preview screening a few days before its release. We all loved it. The audience was laughing all the way through. My friends and I couldn't understand the bad reviews. My only complaint was that the ending basically falls into the exact tropes it was mocking. Glad to see it finally finding the audience it deserves
I genuinely think this is one of the best movies ever made. Even going back for a rewatch for the umpteenth time its still a fun ride.
This has always been my very favourite Schwarzenegger film!!!
I used to watch this after school on VHS
This is dead on.. for 1993 it seems ahead of it's time.
Like most people are saying, loved it as a kid, and it still holds up.
Fun as hell to watch, hard to turn off once you start. 🙌
I discoved Charles Dance way back in The Golden Child where he played Sardo Numspa . His role in TLAH was originally for Alan Rickman . The scene where he walks through the house addressing the audience you can actually get a glimse if the camera crew filming in the glass behind him. This movie was so ahead of its time
I loved this movie as a kid. I've not watched it as an adult, but I'm sure it still holds up.
Totally agree - The Last Action Hero is indeed one of Arnold's best movies, very underrated, it's fun, it's creative, a perfect comedy, exiting direction, a brave endeavor by Arnie to make parody of his (and others') action tropes and movies, it's a unique movie which ages like fine wine 🤩 Great video, well done dude 👍😁
My husband & I share a love of action movies. We saw Last Action Hero in the theatre & loved it; couldn't wait to get it on VHS (and later, DVD). We've watched it several times since, enjoying it no less with repeated viewings. I recently watched it with our 2 teenage daughters, neither of whom are action movie fans. We had watched the series "Promised Land" & I told them that the son in the show was in the movie. They both ended up really enjoying the movie as well.
I loved Last Action Hero when it came out and was always bummed that there was never a sequel to it.
I wanted the _actual_ Jack Slater movies!
@@Geronimo_Jehoshaphat I agree. Those looked like they would have been really good real movies.
I know I like it enough to have the Blu-ray :D
I have the vhs, dvd, blu ray and digital. Great movie
It looks great on 4k
The thing is... I liked Cut throat Island. I don't get why it was hated so much.
I loved The Last Action Hero. The dialogue, the tongue in cheek references, I thought it was the best, still do.
The humor in this great movie was just ahead of its time. It’s still one of my favorite Arnie films.
Still one of my favorite movies since I was a kid
It is one of my favorite movies I have the deluxe DVD still in plastic
Hold on to that, seriously.
@@PrinceIsot ofc I have the matrix n the gladiator as well too
They are taking away physical....n we a losing stuff of value ...with the imagination of nothing but subscription....purchase as much physical as u can it's now an investment
@@PrinceIsot It took me years to track down a DVD, ended up w/ 2003 full screen. Gonna go and look for the deluxe now, tho!
I loved that movie. The bad guy in the movie looks at the camera and says "If GOD were a villain, he'd be me". The black and white movie trailer scenes scenes were amazing and hilarious too. Also great soundtrack.
I loved the Movie from the start.
I was around 20 back then and had so much fun with the movie.
Truely underrated even today.
It got me into Buckethead so...I've never been wrong about Last Action Hero!
Potentially the best ever whatculture vid. Keep these up.
this has always been in my top five favorite movies of all time, something about just grabbed me the first time i watched it as a kid
I've always loved this movie. One of my favorite gags was simple and played to Hollywood's bad editing and our lack of attention to detail when it comes to continuity. Jack falling into the LA Brea Tar Pitts and minutes later being completely clean after using nothing but paper towels was F*CKING GOLD.
I've always thought this movie was very underrated.
"Last Action Hero" makes a perfect finale to a triple feature with "The Hard Way" and "Loaded Weapon 1".
Kinda like "The Rundown" shines in a triple feature as the bridge between "Midnight Run" and "Gunmen".
I was too young to grasp the satire, but I loved the soundtrack. One of the best in cinema history.
Jingle All The Way is one of my “movies I watch every December”.
I always loved this movie. I never missed an Arnold movie in the theater. And I loved the plot of the movie. What kid wouldn't love to be pulled into their favorite action stars movie. Every kids dream!!
I actually really like this movie and has some very good scenes. Love the cast and especially the villain in this. This is one of his best films.
Ive never been wrong about Last Action Hero. One of my all-time favourite films as a kid. Along with Flight of The Navigator
Ive always loved it. Since I was a kid and even more to this day. It is 100% underrated.
Last Action Hero has always been one of my favorite Arnie movies. I love it when an actor can make fun of themselves.
As always, thank you so very much for the videos…
But especially for this one! I've been saying what a great movie this was since I was leaving the theater in '93. Alas my friends didn't quite share my opinion. The cameos, the jokes, the gags (mostly), I loved it!
I'm happy to see I'm not the only one who REALLY appreciated this movie! :)
Last Action Hero was always awesome, I never understood why it was so hated. It's Arny totally taking the piss put of his entire action career.
Last Action Hero is great!! One of my all time favorite movies and the fact AC/DC got a song out of it just makes it better to me. Just imagine Arnie doing Angus' duck walk, hilarious.
This movie also got to wonder...what if Sylvester Stallone played Terminator??
I was never wrong about Last Action Hero, thought it was awesome all my life. And almost always rewatched it on tv, and love seeing reactors watch it.
This movie, I believe, was way ahead of its time. Whether they meant to or not, "Last Action Hero" was meta, before "meta" became Meta. It was, in my opinion, meant to be a parody on the tropes of everything not only of Mr. Swartzaneggar, but a lot of the action hero stereotypes of the time. If more people thought of this movie as a version of "Spaceballs" at the time of release rather than a "Commando/Conan" movie then it would have been received more openly and could have been a much larger known film. I didn't realize these things as a kid when I watched this movie, but I have a better understanding now of how sometimes directors, writers, and actors just enjoy making something fun for themselves, even poking jokes at themselves. Sometimes you just have to have fun, and in this period of film making there were a lot more freedoms that a filmmaker could apply, some harsh, some loose. This movie was the movie "Deadpool" on a more PG, 1980s level.
Watched the movie many times with my Dad when it came out. I think it is still good today.
This movie has one of the absolute best soundtracks in movie history! Two Alin in Chains deep cuts, one of Anthrax's best songs, Megadeth, Def Leppard, I still listen to it to this day. It's almost as good as The Crow soundtrack (1994, not the abomination that came out a recently)
I remember going and seeing this with my dad as a kid. I have always enjoyed this movie and I think it’s for the reasons you point out. I never took seriously, a fun ride poking fun at the genre he was known for.
I’m exceptionally happy to know I’m not alone for my appreciation for this movie. So many times I just hear how horrible this movie is. That note of it being tied to our love of movies is on point. It starts off with a kid who loves movies.
Thank you so much for letting me know I’m not alone.
I just love it! Never cared for critics' opinion. LAH has a great cast and it balances beautifully action with humor. After seeing thousands of films, I dare say the action comedy is one of the most difficult genres to master.
Dudes!! The soundtrack cranks!! From time to time, I jam it front to back, like I’ve been doing since i was a teenager in Coach Taylor’s machine shop class 93’-94’. Try it…..
I love this movie and always felt it was so underrated. This is a movie that i will stop and watch whenever i run across it while scrolling.
Nearly 23 min long and not a single mention of how amazing the soundtrack is.
Never understood the hate. Loved it since watching it for the first time.
I love this movie since I was in my late teens and I never understood why people didn't get it as I got older I realized it's because a lot of his "fans" were these young men who were very stuck in how they wanted things to be that things couldn't change. They didn't want to laugh at themselves and their genre of choice they only want to laugh when the humor is directed outward.
I loved this movie as a kid!!!! Saw it every week back then on vhs
My dad brought me to see a showing of this in 1998 at a run down back alley theatre! Very similar to the one in the movie (that was the idea). I was 9. I got it then, and I get it now. Absolutely ahead of its time if not too smart for the target audience. Not saying that target audience was dumb, it just wasnt what they were looking for.
Oh man, thats the definitive Tywin Lannister too lol. Soo good, the eye!
Love this film! Peak Arnie, Charles Dance's arid wit and a great supporting cast. It's so damn quotable too
This film is waaaaay better than what the critics say
A movie that has the best opening and it goes so underrated
I have always loved the film. It came out when I was like 7 to and I didn't even know people hated it until I was in high school. It shocked me.
Last Action Hero is one of my favorite "AH-NOLD" movies of the 90s, top 3 even
I think Arnold delivers a lot to just about any film he's in. I know there's a lot of people who hate his version of Mr. Freeze, but I really liked it, and this film was also a real banger. It's a shame that people don't seem to understand how great these movies are.
Buddy I've never been wrong about Last Action Hero. Loved it as a kid, love it as an adult.
It’s a great film! Really stands up with its message.
I actually liked the movie. Made me wanna find a movie ticket to get into my favorite movies. Sadly still looking
I always enjoyed Last Action Hero... then again, I also loved Hudson Hawk.
i watched this movie every day after school for a very long time
Love last action hero
honestly, I love this film. I think it was ahead of its time I think if it came out in the 2000s or even now it would have been seen as better. Personally I think its some of Arnold's best work. I love meta stuff that deconstructs genre's and tropes and I love some of the back ground gags and the kid calling out the movies tropes. The villains are legitimately terrifying and the comedy is great.
“Look!!!! Elephant!!!!” deserves to be a meme!
He said when he made the movie that he didn't make it for us. He made it for action heros that realize how silly action heros are! It's practically a perfect movie. A make believe hero gets to see what real life is like.
I liked this movie from the beginning, and I wasn't sure why so many people hated it. I'm glad it's generating more people loving it; maybe one of these years I'll buy it so I can see it again.
Tywin Lannister "I just shot somebody, I did it on purpose!!!"
Random guy "hey shut up."
Classic. Loved it from the start.
I was 18 years old when Last Action Hero released in the theater. My friends and I saw it opening night. I remember thinking how corny it was (although the soundtrack was awesome). Years later I revisited the film, and I actually loved it.
I love this movie and never understood why it caught so much hate. It’s clearly a satire of the whole action genre and to watch it through the lens of a “SERIOUS ACTION MOVIE” would be a disservice to yourself.
This movie has always been underrated!
Seen the movie 2 times in theaters when it was out. Love it.
I have this movie on 4k steel book and my mom took me to see this one, I was 5 and we sat in the theater to watch it 2 more times😅
