Love it Jacob! Book is ordered and on its way, and I'm looking really seriously at the improviser's guide site as well. The almost RATM-like "killing in the name of" vibe starting around :40 is just...SO tasty on the cello, with the key modulation and dynamics and all the rest of your own personal steez. Great stuff, really looking forward to studying this one!
Right on Evan! The book is a cool way to explore cello techniques... IGC is for learning to improvise, and overcome the blindspots cellists have in approaching it.
You're awesome! I know I'd get more reviews if I just did Pop covers, but it's nice that there are still some people are actually looking for good stuff on RUclips...Who knew?:)
Rodrigo, so great to hear from you man! Are you a cellist? So this particular piece was part of a book of Contemporary cello etudes you can get from Berklee press. You can get my other compositions from partreon.com/jacobszekely and I'll be launching an online sheet music store next week actually to celebrate my new album.
Debra, good question. So when most people talk about nonclassical /alternative/multi-style cello, they are thinking about extended techniques like chopping/raking etc. often using them in fiddle music or bad covers. If you want to learn about these techniques, RUclips is great as it allows you to SEE how the players are executing that technique. Then there is something much deeper which is actually being able to improvise and developing a voice on your instrument beyond the tricks. If you want to learn about improvisation, I like Eugene Friesens book allot, but for video there is only one place that really systematically breaks down the unique challenges cellists face as improvisors and provides real substantive insight and that's The Improvisors Guide to The Cello (www.theimprovisorsguide.com). The site also has an outstanding Groove of the week series dedicated to the former with chopping, flicking and pizz lessons from many of the best cellists in the business.
Those are called posture pegs. They are hiding in there but you insert an Allen wrench light key to turn them. They’re designed so that you don’t have to tweak your neck when playing the cello and having the peg box up against your head. For me it makes the cello much more comfortable to play, but it means that I rely on the fine tuners!
By accident just listened to this at a speed of 1.5x and couldn't understand the speed of the drums... man, too fast... The cello flying as well, too cool... Listened again at normal speed and yeah, the drummer is human... the cellist as well.
He slapped the cello. I love it.
Glad you dug it Acorn!
Serías tan amable de contarme algo de la biografia de este cellista, me encanta pero no sé ingles.@@jacobszekely
This sounds a bit like RATM so cool! Love the tone!
Thanks Jemima! The book is out now, and if you play cello, you can get check out my BRAND NEW Cello groove cookbook at TheImprovisorsGuide.com

0:38 - Hilarious. Love it! Great piece Jacob!
So ethereal and exciting. Great imagination and execution. Nicely produced. Love it.
The cello produces a truly unique sound when plucked, too deep for a guitar but too high for a bass.
@@adamdavey2084 yes I do mean an upright bass.
@@adamdavey2084 electric bass and upright bass are in the same tuning
@@adamdavey2084
Electric bass is in E and the cello is a C above, about a minor sixth difference.
@@adamdavey2084 the cello C string is only three tones below the guitar E string, any bass is at least one octave lower
@@zal8424 I was talking about pitch not tuning.
This is awesome, jazz cello is my absolute favorite
almost as fun to watch as it is to listen to. Bravo!

Not quite Corey, but of course I'm a big Herboe fan (like everyone else on the planet)
what happened to his c and g pegs
