This is an actually fairly scary game, but also incredibly difficult to beat. A lot of the later parts of the game are cryptic and would need a guide to reasonably beat, not to mention you can’t even save the game at any point (no checkpoints either). I would like to see Mark play more of this, but I hope he doesn’t burn out all his interest for this game through frustration or confusion. Edit: I'm fully aware that other youtubers have beaten this game (CoryxKenshin and Berleezy namely), but it wasn't easy for them either. If I'm remembering correctly they both also had to use guides or the help of others to beat it. This comment is more of a warning of what's to come in case Mark decides to play it again.

"Red paper" the person will be struck with blunt force trauma over and over and completely covered in their own blood, hence "red". "Blue paper" the person will be strangled to death, hence "blue". as someone who has played this game it is great to see mark play it -the floating mask if it spots you alerts the monster -the monster can spot you if it does run and hide -the monster is dumb and lockers are your friend because of it -monster can't go in the vents -the red glowing things on the walls are used by the monster to get to one place to another fast when the floating mask spots you -the bug spray is useless don't use it it really isn't that good

I haven't seen Mark scared enough to actually have Alt-F4 as a consideration in his mind for a long time. Whatever this game is doing, it is hitting all of the right notes to create a horrifying experience and I applaud it. I am amazed that the creator was able to make a monster that instilled real dread into Mark whenever he knew it could be around. Bravo to them, and bravo to Mark for powering through for as long as he did. I would be very down for more of this.
For some reason Mark's comment "I don't like that there's a mechanic for partially opening doors" made me imagine a horror game where their is no monster. It's just atmosphere and having you run around with mechanics that seem like they will suck and random moments of 'it's coming' but it never is.

This is actually such a creepy game, pretty challenging, and complex. I would love for Mark to look up some more of the story so the game is understood better, and for him to play more! There's just such an unsettling vibe to this game and I'M HERE FOR IT.
all i know about this game from a streamer i watched a few years back is that hoarding all the items in the vent is your best option, just gotta be wary of centipede
This seems like a cool game that badly needs some kinda save mechanic. A 15 minute playthrough can't even get you to enter all the zones, let alone complete any of the complicated puzzles. As interesting as this game looks, getting caught out in a dead end while exploring only to lose an hour of gameplay doesn't seem all that fun.
There was another hunt-and-collect horror game Mark played, based off a creepypasta (The Hat Man I think) that was long and had no checkpoints. He went from enjoying it and getting spooked, to being sarcastic and not caring when the ghost appeared. At a certain point, a challenge won't be enjoyed even if completed. Getting through without saves should be an achievement, not be the difference between finishing a game or not.
That first chase sequence and death starting at 14:00 was so perfect, you couldn't script it better. After all the running and the screaming and the near death, there's a lull, and then he turns the corner and that 1 second cut off scream - "You dead" unbelievably perfect XD
The name Atsushi and Nakajima may be a reference to the japanese famous writer "Atsushi Nakajima". He's also a character from an anime called "Bungo Stray Dogs" and is the protagonist.
It's most likely more a reference to the author than it is to Asagiri's series haha. Oh and bonus fact: Bunsto Atsushi is the most popular rendition of the writer, but he's not the only one. There are also versions of Atsushi in the Love Heaven game, Bungo to Alchemist version, and another Atsushi from a game I forget the name of, but I do remember that version of him is a rather creepy stalker of the Akutagawa Ryunosuke in that game. I think there may also be a Bungo Shikkaku version, but it's been years since I heard the drama series.
Have you seen him play Nun Massacre? It's near the same game except with a different setting, and equally as scary. Yet, he never came back to it. He doesn't really revisit games anymore, so I don't expect to see this one again sadly.

I dreamed about a mirror specially crafted so that no matter who stood in front of it, it only reflected Markiplier. Like, I walked up to this mirror and my reflection was straight up Markiplier. I screamed. Next thing I know he's sitting at this random table a few feet away from me and he's just silently eating macaroni. I don't remember anything else from my dream, just the Markiplier mirror.
I'm mostly sensitive to audio horror, so the lack of any kind of sound in this game makes the sudden sound cues extremely terrifying to me But I have to applaud the creator for making such an intense horror game that is truly terrifying
Yes! That's another thing that makes this so unsettling. Your minding your business crowbarring some planks and out of no where hear shreiks that sound like a big foot hunter that got his own tv show only to turn around and see a 9 foot tall red caped, masked, and ugly son of a bitch with a giant steak knife. And you know that knife ain't actually for steak cause your the only real snack in the building and aka is see through sometimes so his ass obviously must be malnourished at this point and willing to eat anything.
There's something so unsettling about that distortion effect. I mean, the sound design, atmosphere, and enemy design are all on point, but the warping in your peripherals, especially with all that wood/straight lines...Very effective design choice.
i noticed when i played this game that the stomping that plays when aka manto chases the charachter, it induces your flight or fight response so it really feels like hes right behind me
I think the warping you see is a render effect. When games back then couldn't process many graphics, they render the ones you don't see. This game probably did this so it gives it a more older feel. Pretty cool!
I questioned if the game was made by puppet combo when I first noticed that even though I knew Chilla made this. VERY different from their current style and nice to see them adopt their own.

The game is difficult, it's designed to have you running around with items (small inventory and lots of items that are used on the other side of the map). There are 7 pieces of paper and 7 anatomy items; either set leads to an ending, but finding the full set is difficult enough for someone who doesn't know the map. Aka Manto does love spawning near you as well, making the achievement for completing it without getting hit once very fun.
Please play more of this game, this is one of the most terrifying horror games i've seen in recent times... As well as being insanely difficult. I loved it back when Coryxkenshin played it, and i'd love to see you beat it too!

I literally felt my soul leave my body when the centipede crawled by. I was so relaxed watching and I literally felt myself disappear for a split second when it came through.
According to Gab Smolders, Jacksepticeye's girlfriend, centipedes do get really grossly big in Japan, and can kill a child with their venomous bite. Not only are they disconcerting, they're dangerous, and like to hang out in bathrooms and attics.

This game scratches an uncomfortable itch so I'd love to see more of it. The whole concept of Aka Manto always messed with me since that things catches you off guad when you feel the most vulnerable, in an already claustrophobic place - the toilet. And if you don't know how it works, you are practically dead no matter what. I wonder how many pranks there are where people just hang blue and red toilet paper in public toilets.
Wait until you find out ninja sometimes spied on and/or assassinated people in toilets, making the concept very real. According to legend that's how Uesugi Kenshin died... a ninja was hiding in the sewage and stabbed him through the butt with a spear.

_Aka Manto_ , literally "red cape" (originally "red jacket) is a figure from Japanese urban legend. If you are using a public toilet, _Aka Manto_ may come to you and ask if you would prefer red paper or blue paper. Choose red, and you receive a bloody death. Choose blue and you receive a death that removes all of your blood or suffocates you. Choose another color and _Aka Manto_ gets... creative. The only safe response is not to answer, or to state that you have no preference, and/or to run away as fast as you can.
_Ofuda_ : This is a slip of blessed paper, imbued with the power of the local temple's deity. This one looks to be a _shinsatsu_ , meaning it needs to be placed at the local shrine's altar. In this game, the shrine also has a sword, which can be used against _Aka Manto_ . But you need all the colored papers to get it. Speaking of which, the Well has the Blue Paper, so you'll need to find that coin.
The Anatomy Model holds the key to escaping the school. The pieces are the Nose, the Ribcage (both of which you found), the Eyes (near the Pool), the Brain (exit the girl's bathroom and go R-L-R), the Left Arm (from the last room, go L-L-R), the Right Arm (in the Library) and the Organ (also in the Library, but you need to find the three red books to get it).
The other two requirements to escaping the school are a koppe pan (roll from the lunch room) and some milk. You'll see why when you get to the roof.

as someone who has played this game it is great to see mark play it
-the floating mask if it spots you alerts the monster
-the monster can spot you if it does run and hide
-the monster is dumb and lockers are your friend because of it
-monster can't go in the vents
-the red glowing things on the walls are used by the monster to get to one place to another fast when the floating mask spots you
-the bug spray is useless don't use it it really isn't that good

I haven't seen Mark scared enough to actually have Alt-F4 as a consideration in his mind for a long time. Whatever this game is doing, it is hitting all of the right notes to create a horrifying experience and I applaud it.
I am amazed that the creator was able to make a monster that instilled real dread into Mark whenever he knew it could be around. Bravo to them, and bravo to Mark for powering through for as long as he did. I would be very down for more of this.
I haven't seen Mark be this unnerved by a horror game in a LOOOOOONG time. It's pretty fun.

For some reason Mark's comment "I don't like that there's a mechanic for partially opening doors" made me imagine a horror game where their is no monster. It's just atmosphere and having you run around with mechanics that seem like they will suck and random moments of 'it's coming' but it never is.

This seems like a cool game that badly needs some kinda save mechanic. A 15 minute playthrough can't even get you to enter all the zones, let alone complete any of the complicated puzzles. As interesting as this game looks, getting caught out in a dead end while exploring only to lose an hour of gameplay doesn't seem all that fun.
There was another hunt-and-collect horror game Mark played, based off a creepypasta (The Hat Man I think) that was long and had no checkpoints. He went from enjoying it and getting spooked, to being sarcastic and not caring when the ghost appeared. At a certain point, a challenge won't be enjoyed even if completed. Getting through without saves should be an achievement, not be the difference between finishing a game or not.

I dreamed about a mirror specially crafted so that no matter who stood in front of it, it only reflected Markiplier. Like, I walked up to this mirror and my reflection was straight up Markiplier. Your minding your business crowbarring some planks and out of no where hear shreiks that sound like a big foot hunter that got his own tv show only to turn around and see a 9 foot tall red caped, masked, and ugly son of a bitch with a giant steak knife. And you know that knife ain't actually for steak cause your the only real snack in the building and aka is see through sometimes so his ass obviously must be malnourished at this point and willing to eat anything.
God, I need to have more of this because I will absolutely not be able to play this on my own, Chilla's work is too powerful for my feeble mind.

There's something so unsettling about that distortion effect. I mean, the sound design, atmosphere, and enemy design are all on point, but the warping in your peripherals, especially with all that wood/straight lines...Very effective design choice.
i noticed when i played this game that the stomping that plays when aka manto chases the charachter, it induces your flight or fight response so it really feels like hes right behind me
I think the warping you see is a render effect. When games back then couldn't process many graphics, they render the ones you don't see. This game probably did this so it gives it a more older feel. Pretty cool!
I questioned if the game was made by puppet combo when I first noticed that even though I knew Chilla made this. VERY different from their current style and nice to see them adopt their own.

I love that modern Markiplier is just as rad as classic Markiplier.
The game is difficult, it's designed to have you running around with items (small inventory and lots of items that are used on the other side of the map).
There are 7 pieces of paper and 7 anatomy items; either set leads to an ending, but finding the full set is difficult enough for someone who doesn't know the map.
Aka Manto does love spawning near you as well, making the achievement for completing it without getting hit once very fun.

According to Gab Smolders, Jacksepticeye's girlfriend, centipedes do get really grossly big in Japan, and can kill a child with their venomous bite. Not only are they disconcerting, they're dangerous, and like to hang out in bathrooms and attics.

This game scratches an uncomfortable itch so I'd love to see more of it.
The whole concept of Aka Manto always messed with me since that things catches you off guad when you feel the most vulnerable, in an already claustrophobic place - the toilet.
And if you don't know how it works, you are practically dead no matter what. I wonder how many pranks there are where people just hang blue and red toilet paper in public toilets.
Wait until you find out ninja sometimes spied on and/or assassinated people in toilets, making the concept very real.
According to legend that's how Uesugi Kenshin died... a ninja was hiding in the sewage and stabbed him through the butt with a spear.
