    Whats the top speed on that boat?

      The winning times in a 4 mile race can be around 30 minutes, so about 8 mph, or 7 knots. Pretty fast boats for row boats with 50 big guys on them.

      Thats a great point that so many people have found interesting...are the boats with less rowers like Aeto faster because they have less weight, or the boats like Fuao faster because they have 50 rowers? Or the ones in between; Paepaeulupo'o (45?), Manulele Tausala (46?) etc ? And then that begs further questions; are the flat stern boats better because they steer quicker, or the pointed stern boats because they are more streamline and have less drag in the water? Different boats with different numbers of rowers and different designs have won through the years. I guess all this is part, just part, of what makes these races so fun. Great comment!

      When the satani in '97 now Manulele Tausala, with 45 rowers did a time test from 5 miles out to the end, came in at about 25 minutes.
