My lord. After all these years . . . this one still gets to me. Made me think of our pup. Losing her was so hard, we never got another dog. The loss was too tough.
"Shannon" was written about the death of Beach Boys member Carl Wilson's Irish Setter of the same name. While touring with the Beach Boys in 1975, Gross visited Wilson's home in Los Angeles and in conversation said he had an Irish Setter named Shannon. Wilson replied that he had also had an Irish Setter named Shannon that had recently been killed when hit by a car
It's about a dog dying
I remember hearing that this was about a dog dying when I was a teen in the seventies. Now i remember all my babies and I'm bawling.
Now you've done it. Now you gotta do "Wildfire", by Michael Murphy.
Wildfire, indeed. One of my favorite opening lines.
Henry is from Brooklyn, NY. He says thanks for the shout out! 🎸
I remember when this song first came out. There were rumors that Shannon was a pet goldfish - "drifting out to sea". Of course, it was just a rumor, but in reality, it was about Carl Wilson's Irish Setter.
I just heard this yesterday, and wound up teary-eyed. We put down the last of our four cats a few years ago, and it was really hard, as he was my favorite. I cried for days.
this song came out a few months after we had to put down our 22 yr old chihuahua/fox terrier mix Tiny when I was 26. it had been yrs since i heard this- my heart broke all over again💔 thank you guys, you're awesome!! Love & Blessings!! ❤️🙏❤️
Thanks for listening
my boy sarge 12 yr. shep. passed 3months ago . sorry for your and every elses looses
Henry Gross was born in Brooklyn, NY. Will be 72 in next month. "Shannon" was released in 1976. Was a founding member of greaser group Sha-Na-Na too. Last album out in September '22. At present Gross is still very musically alive and kickin'...🎤🎸🎶
The song is beautiful though we had a little fun with it back in the 70s as it was about a dog dying. Now I'm older and have this damn dog who as it turns out is such a good boy and my best buddies. The song is no longer funny.
I always think of my dog Dagny, who lived to the ripe old age of 18. You never stop missing them.
So glad you reacted to this! I don’t ever see anyone react to this. I see tons of reactions to “Wildfire” but not this. Same on the radio. I love “Wildfire “ but I would like to hear Shannon sometimes too.
I think he only has one song ! This is the only one I've ever heard, and I think it's about a dog, although I don't remember where I heard that. OK enough of this crap, get back to RUSH !
He can shred a guitar ,,Chek out the song Southern Band by Henry Gross
Have 4 of his lps. Plug Me Into Something I like pretty much.
Another good song from around the same time, also about losing an animal, and another one that's hard to figure out what the hell he's talking about is Wildfire, by Micheal Murphy, similar sound too, that acoustic guitar light pop/rock/country. Maybe y'all already done it, not sure ! Love you guys !
This was Henry’s big hit, but far from his best song. He had quite a cult following back in the ‘70s. Checkout “Simone”, “Meet Me On the Corner” , “Southern Band” or “One More Tomorrow “. Also great guitarist.
It is about Brian Wilson's dog who had passed.
This is a great song. It is considered a one-hit wonder. Henry Gross is an American singer-songwriter who was a founding member of the 1950's Rock & Roll revival group "Sha Na Na" before going solo in 1970. He also played electric lead guitar on the Jim Croce album "I Got A Name".
I believe he was the youngest performer at Woodstock, not positive. I am positive hi Plug Me Into Something is a definite rocker, a lot different than Shannon!
Thank you for the information.👍🏻
Sweet song that was a hit and played often on FM radio in the NYC listening area.
He had another less popular hit called "Springtime Mama", which was great too!
It wasn't until recently that I realized this song was about a dog, not a woman. I guess I never really focused in that hard on the lyrics! Another good song choice. This was a HUGE one-hit wonder radio song in the summer of '76.
That’s The Beach Boys singing background FYI.
Henry Gross was the high voice in 50's styled/revival group Sha Na Na. The dog was NOT his, but he was writing about his friend, Carl Wilson (of the Beach Boys) … they had something in common, a dog called Shannon. Henry however, chose to write this song about Carl Wilson's Irish Setter, Shannon, relaying how she died.
Here's the story, in his own words (I think it's really sweet) ...
"When I was twenty-one years old a wonderful girl came into my life by the name of Kathy Reinmann. As if having her in my life as a friend, a wife and a friend again for the next twenty-three years, until she died of lung cancer in 1995, was not enough, she brought along with her a two-year-old Irish Setter named Shannon. She was an uncannily human-dog whose ability to manipulate her human counterparts cannot be understated.
I was touring around the country quite a lot in 1975 promoting an album called HENRY GROSS, the one with the yellow cover on A&M Records. I had the pleasure of doing long strings of dates with The Beach Boys, a group whose music always inspired me, Carl Wilson, lead singer on God Only Knows and Good Vibrations, was warm and welcoming from the very first show I played with them.
Carl invited me to his house in Los Angeles to spend a day talking guitars, cars, and rock & roll. While he was preparing lunch his two Alaskan husky dogs reached up on the counter and inhaled our food. Carl was so nice he couldn’t stop apologizing but I told him while admiring the military perfection of the raid executed by his huskies, that I had an Irish Setter at home named Shannon and had seen this act many times before! He was quite moved as he told me that he had an Irish Setter named Shannon that had been killed only recently when hit by a car. We spent the rest of the day jamming and driving around Carl’s world, which as a friend and to be honest, a Beach Boy’s fanatic, was quite a thrill."
You got that right....music can speak to the soul and this one does.... breaks my heart. I feel it. Whew.....
My wife of fifty years loves this song, and has since she was young. I’ve never had the heart to tell her it’s about a dog. That would tear her apart.
Love this song!
Thank you Asia and BJ!
Wow, I heard this song last week on the way to the beach for the first time in years & told my husband I should suggestions to you guys but forgot about it after my vacay.
Coincidence!
I believe he is from the east coast. He performs in each year in my hometown and raises money for a local animal rescue shelter.
Henry wrote this song about Carl Wilson of The Beach Boys Irish setter that died.
Simply a great Pop song Thanx Henry
The best song about a dog ever recorded imho 😢
Wow! Never thought anyone would react to this sad song from my teen years! Now that you have, how about another great tune that I have yet to see anyone react to? It’s called “Remember What I Told You To Forget” and it’s performed by Tavares. #tavares
I haven't heard this in 45 years. I'm sooooo due.
Tom Jones & Aretha Franklin - Medley 1970
I remember this song from the '70's. Fantastic! BJ was wrapped up in Henry's singing. 👍
Oh gosh...I have 3 cats....gonna be tough...don't know if I could live through it....
Good evening. I have a song suggestion for you react to, Big Mama Thornton's original version of Hound Dog (1952). I think you'll find it very cool. Have a great night.
I remember listening to this song when I was a teen in the 70s, fell in love with it. Thanks for posting it. A great song
A movie suggestion; "Sister Act" with Whoopie Goldberg. It's an excellent movie and comedy. Thanks.
good for you two for doing this gorgeous ass mutha f#$kin song by THEE Henry Gross!! RIP to my bluepoint siamese soulmate Lolita, 13.5 yrs... see you in heaven my girl xo.
Henry Gross was from Brooklyn or Queens. The Dog he's singing about was Carl Wilson's from the beach boys his dog Shannon was killed by a car Henry wrote the song from the story.
Please react to FREE YOUR MIND by En Vogue ...official video
I think he is American. He wrote the song for Carl Wilson of The Beach Boys after his Irish Setter passed over The Rainbow Bridge. A beautiful song that really brings tears to people who have lost pets they've loved.I think he is American.
Ok. I still remember when I heard this song and I thought he was exploiting people love for their pets. That is why I despised it. It's insincere. It's Gross.
Wildfire is a much better song about a loved pet.
This song came our my sophomore year of college. I have the 45.
Okay Asia and BJ. I love you guys and watch all you're reactions. But seriously, Shannon?
I remember that song back in the 70's. I was always like, "Man get a boat out there and look for that dog!" Seems I heard one word wrong in the lyrics.
You guys should listen to the song Mean Girls by Leanna Crawford. This is for anyone who has ever been bullied.
He's not from the UK, but he did have an association with Sha-Na-Na.
Many one-hit wonders are sort of cheesy-sounding. This is just a great one-hit wonder of a song.
Great song. I continue to listen to it after all of these years. And don't let your name be Shannon, or you will hear me sing the full song.
This was not a song I could take for a long time ,I assumed it was more for the girls to listen to but times changes as opinions do and Henry is a musical genius with a line of great albums ...
Great song from 1976 Made #6 in the top 100 Coast to Coast!
I hear about 45 times the work "like" was used...lol
I just lost my dog. He will always be daddy's puppy wuppy! 😢
Henry Gross is American,,he is not from the UK
Hey I love you two! We def need to hang somewhere sometime!
YOUR VERSION SOUNDS CLEAR UNLIKE THE ORIGINAL
About a beloved family dog named Shannon
Shannon swam out to sea and never came back...
The youngest performer at Woodstock as a member of Sha Na Na.
Henry Gross Was Born In Brooklyn, New York.
Asia & BJ, was this from a one-hit wonder stream? It reached #6 in the US.
Henry Gross was imitating the Beach Boys on this song.
Was Shannon a run away child🤔
A beautiful song. ❤❤❤
Shannon their pet dog that died
Haven't heard this since 75. Thank God.
That aside, I'm digging the Max Headroom effect on BJ. Makes listening to this Four Seasons ripoff less torturous. 😉
It came out in the spring of 76.
@@skiptowne5724 so im off by a few months. Cut me some slack.
Its hell losing a dog
It’s about a dead dog
☮️❤️🔥🔥🔥🎶🎵🎶...😔
I always loved this song but didn’t really know what (or who, rather) it was about. A while back I saw another reaction to it and learned that it was about a dog. So of course, now that I know that I’m crying listening to it. I have a hard time understanding some of the lyrics so I need to pull them up and read them. They were small on this video but I did pick up on something about a tree “just like the one in our backyard,” which to me doesn’t sound like what he’s saying. I believe it. I just would never have figured it out on my own. It’s so nice being able to look up lyrics now. It would have been nice to have that ability back in the seventies.
Great song. Thanks for reacting to it. And BJ, I’m with you on loving his voice and performance. Again, great song.
He's American. Actually the Beach Boys did all the background vocals in this song.
He's American.
🔥🔥🔥🔥
Nice song, but I never could stand the vocals on it. Glad that forced falsetto vocal style went out of style for men.
Talk about scraping the bottom of the barrel! hahahaha I don't care what the song is supposed to be about, it just plain SUCKS! Bubblegum Whining at its best!! You got DUPED!
