    • @seigeengine

    • @coragon42
      @coragon42 5 лет назад +50

      EDIT: These are just some small thoughts, so take them with a grain of salt.
      I think the thing about modern art is that its values are different from classical art/other types of art. Instead of technique being the main star (like in other types of art), hidden meaning, uniqueness, and deviance are highly valued in modern art.
      So it just depends on what you're looking for. If you value the values of modern art, then that seems more worth it for you. If vice versa, then pieces like James' are for you.

    • @hup3769
      @hup3769 5 лет назад +44

      Emerson Yu
      I understand that. I understand that some people just enjoy hidden meanings in somewhat pretty pictures. And, if done right, modern art can look aesthetically pleasing. What I dont understand is how people can spend MILLIONS of dollars on them.

      Some would argue that he's overcharging. Personally, I wouldn't pay so much when I could get something similar printed up for a few hundred bucks.
      In my opinion, he's charging around the right amount. $100k would make that piece more profitable than becoming a medical specialist.

    • @alZiiHardstylez
      @alZiiHardstylez 5 лет назад +8

      The 'value' of art is what someone is willing to pay for the piece.
      As talented as this man is. He has no correlation to the series other than being a fan, perhaps if he had ties to the franchise as an art director or original designer, the value of his work would be far greater.
      $100k is steep but that's due to the sentimental value James puts on it, he doesn't want to sell it hence the inflated price to potentially pass it on.
      As impressive at it can be, fan art is treated entirely different to traditional art in the sense of monetary value.
      If I were James, I'd probably use a pseudonym and pivot myself into the gallery scene if he was more fiscally inclined. That's just my own thought though, when it comes down to it, he does it for the love and that's invaluable.

    I'm striving to become a graphic designer and sculptor! Seeing this and seeing that you're also a die hard star wars fan makes me want to become more of an artist. And since you make good bank with your drawings I can see this future career for me to pay quite nicely ;) lol
    LOL but in all seriousness, you and other artists inspire me to do what you guys do. I'm in college now, just started few days ago... So I want to be determined to do art in my life and be as great as you!

    22 years ago, I received a scholarship to an art university for sequential art. I gave it up since it still wasn't enough to cover full tuition, let alone residency and such. Regardless, even back then, being nowhere near as skilled, I charged similar prices (adjusting for inflation at $100+). I know comic art isn't as appreciated as it should be, but I believe you heavily undervalue your talent. I know you do it out of love, but, DAMN!!!! Your hyper detailed pieces belong in galleries and your Star Wars piece really should be in a museum after being purchased for at least a half million.Too few people realize the difficulty in conveying depth of emotion, action, and perspective on a smaller scale. It took me 9 months to do just 4 pages of photo-realistic portraits using only stippling.
    I'm bloody in awe, dude. Seriously.
