Jon Theodore at the drums was incredible. Now is working for QOTSA. Cedric the singer told that it was one of their biggest mistakes to let him go.
I was fortunate to see them live with the original lineup! After the organ player died and then Jon left they went downhill. Theodore was the push to those first to albums!
But many beats are made by blake fleming,,..and jon played them...but they didnt told jon that many beats were made by blake to avoid bad mood in studio

@@ajversus Pridgen is insane and one of the few people that could have probably filled that slot, but Theodore's style just 'fits' a bit better IMO. Don't get me wrong, I love both of them they're insane and Omar obviously has a thang for ridiculously talented drummers lol
I'm proud of you guys for wanting to hear more from The Mars Volta. It's an understatement to say their music can be demanding of the listener. Check out Illyena from the album Bedlam in Goliath for something a bit less chaotic. Agadez from that same album is also a really cool song. Once you're a little more acclimated to their music you have to hear Frances the Mute from start to finish. It's a stunning album.
This song is arguably my favorite Volta song. Their first two albums are concept albums and are best listened to from start to finish because you are going to have some outros that transition into the next song.knowing that, I recommend one of these songs next:
- Roulette Dares
- Drunkship of Lanterns
- Cicatriz ESP
- L'Via L'Viaquez
- Concertina (Post Tremulant Version)

I'm so happy you guys liked it, and I actually almost recommended in my request that you stop the song at 10 minutes because I thought the outro might have just had you sitting there twiddling your thumbs waiting for it to end for 3 minutes lol. So the fact that you specifically mentioned liking the outro is cool too! Also, good ear noticing the Red Hot Chili Peppers vibes, Flea played on this album!
I see some comments here saying I should have recommended something more accessible first and I totally get where you're coming from. I just couldn't resist sending them this one because I simply had to see how they would react to the whole thing haha (and I know how open minded and appreciative they are of great musicianship)! I recommended a song by a different band for my second Patreon request but I might pick another Mars Volta one for my third. One I try to sneak up on reactors is the Aberinkula/Metatron back-to-back straight through listen. My favorite opening to any album.
TMV is without equal. You were close with the RHCP! Flea played bass on their first LP. On this, he plays the trumpet on "Miranda, That Ghost Just Isn't Holy Anymore" (best song title in history). Also, John Frusciante, the guitarist for RHCP, plays some of the guitar on this album. Juan Alderete plays bass on this album.

Storm Thorgerson did the album artwork for The Mars Volta’s first two albums, including the one you see here. He also did some of Pink Floyd’s most famous album covers. Good eye.

I love how she said she feels like she’s chasing the white rabbit. That’s exactly how I felt when I first heard their first full album haha! And what’s even more awesome is the reference to Red Hot Chili Peppers haha. John Frusciante and Flea made Guest Appearances on this album.

This is the kind of band that takes a few listens. You're either totally into it or it's a hard pass. Personally I love a lot of their songs and there is many I don't. I love this one.
What do you think of the new album? It certainly is a totally different/new direction for The Mars Volta, but I still like it. The more I listen to it the more I like it, especially with the understanding that a new album would never have been written without them evolving into a totally different direction (as they've stated themselves in recent interviews).

The drummer is Jon Theodore; he was the drummer on the first three albums. This was the second album. The founding members are from At The Drive-In.
But many beats were made and created by blake fleming,.roulette dares.cicatriz,.concertina,...even many beats on frances are made by him,..but in studio they didnt told jon this to avoid bad mood,..even some old beats are used on amputecture,..

TMV, in my opinion, is one of the most genre-pushing, uncompromised rock bands of the last 20 years. It's super chaotic and unconventional but its super rewarding.

Cygnus...Vismund Cygnus is definitely jumping in the deep end. they have less chaotic songs, but they are generally more chaotic than most other bands. listening to the interlude/outro at the end, you really need to hear it going into L'Via L'Viaquez, one of their best songs. if you react to it, be sure to get the full 12 minute version. my personal favorite is Day of the Baphomets. both songs are a whole journey. if you want one of their ballads, Asilos Magdalena is gorgeous.
TMV are friends with the Chili Peppers, and have had both Flea and Frusciante on their albums. their first album was before they found their permanent bassist, Juan Alderete (who's an absolute beast) so i think all but one track has Flea on bass. De-Loused in the Comatorium, all-time classic. their third album, Amputecture, has Frusciante on a lot of the guitar parts to let Rodriguez-Lopez step back into more of a composer and bandleader role. also an excellent album.
The outro doesn't lead to L'Via L'Viaquez though, The Widow comes after this track.

I saw these guys open up for System of a Down back in the day before I knew who they were. Crazy stuff, wasn't really my jam back then. I can appreciate they are amazing musicians. might have to give them another go.

Haha yo I saw them on that same tour as a kid who was really into system of a down but when these guys played it felt like they stole the show and were the damn headliners and I fell in love with them it made systems show seem like the opener with a mid performance
Ooof, concerning The Mars Volta, a recommendation is difficult, they have quite the catalog.
But if I had to:
- Cicatriz ESP
- Tetragrammaton
They both feature the same drummer you both gave kudos to. 1st and 3rd albums respectively.
But cicatriz,..and parts of tetra are made by blake fleming,.
Love The Mars Volta, this is my second favorite album with the first being Deloused in the Comatorium.
This song is a prog rock masterpiece. It took a few listens but when it clicked I fell in love. I didn't even really catch the brilliant chorus at the first listen, there was just so much going on. Close to the Edge by Yes is my favourite progressive track ever and my journey with that song was quite similar.
Literally same, was just blown away by the chaotic bizarre nature of the tracks but they both really wrap around to sounding beautiful and awesome.
Totally agreed. I also just made a comparison with this song and CttE. Amazing songs, both of them. Adventures exploring the fringes of what it means to experience music. And now that I'm listening to it again, the break in this song sounds a lot like the break in Awaken.

Awesome stuff guys! Do more Volta, they'll melt your minds in the best way possible. You'd probably love their first 3 records, especially Deloused which has a very punk/post-hardcore feel, but they're all pretty great and different from anything else out there. I recommend "Cicatriz ESP", "Eriatarka", "The Haunt Of Roulette Dares", "Inertiatic ESP", "Tetragrammaton", or "Take The Veil Cerpin Taxt", all classic TMV jams.

They should check out "Son et Lumiere" into "Inertiatic ESP", "Take the vel Cerpin Taxt", the first 11 or so minutes of "Cassandra Gemini", and "Goliath" for a pretty great run of Mars Volta goodness.
You could never go wrong. But one does not listen to the first 11 minutes and not the last 21+. It’s the law.

The Mars Volta is one of my all time favorite band. I am so happy so see people do 'first time hearing' videos for them. They are individually very good musicians, but the chaotic pulse that is projected out of the speakers is like something I have never heard before.
These guys are bonkers, mental, brilliant, easily one of the wildest and eirdest prog rock bands out there, definitely. Intertiatic ESP is the ideal place to go next from here, since you liked this you'll LOVE that, it's guaranteed to truly properly get you into these guys.

I first heard of The Mars Volta listening to Inertiatic ESP on an online prog radio station. I instantly loved the song and checked out the Deloused album. It quickly became one of my favorite albums of all time. When Frances The Mute came out, I hated it. I thought it was nothing catchy like Deloused. I grew to like it over time (it took years). Now I think it's right up there with Deloused as one of their best albums.
You will love their song called Ilyena, it’s more straightforward and soooo groovy

Mars Volta is not easy listening at first that is for sure. But at least for me personally they get better and better every time I listen to them. I especially love this album in particular. They can incorporate so many genres into one song and it's awesome. When I first heard this song I likened it to having a panic attack in music form. Not in a bad way though because I've grown to love it more and more.
They were more into vast amounts of weed and at least a little smack than uppers. Shockingly. I saw them perform in several states of intoxication and you’d never know it.
Seeing them live was like watching a bomb going off. The first few years of the bands existence anyways. Pre extended jam era.
Check out any live footage from 2003. It’s otherworldly. Or their previous band At The Drive In’s “Big Day Out” performance.

With Mars Volta a lot of listeners make the mistake of trying to take everything in all at once. Don't do that. Focus on the groove, its there in the background, and they keep coming back to it. The accents around the groove are there to add flourish, you will start appreciating them the more you listen to them and understand how they compose their songs. Remember, this is as much jazz as it is the rock blues riffs.
Exactly this. Hook yourself on that groove and let the rest fall into place.
Flea from RHCP did play trumpet on a couple of songs on this album and played bass on all but 2 songs from the first album.
John Frusiante played guitar as well in a lot of the songs.

This is my fav TMV track. They are definitely not something you will understand or feel comfortable with right away. PS There is a big connection between them and RHCP. 80s RHCP was pretty hard, and pretty fast.

Just saw the guys for the 3rd time Sunday night in Chicago. Mind blowing experience. This song imparticular had probably a 5 minutes extended solo that can only be described as the sound of a guitar orgasming. So fucking good live.
By the way it's funny you mention them sounding like RHCP and SOAD. The first two times I saw them was opening for those 2 bands.
I always liked weird music, I always had a weird mind but not sure why, I'm a clean person though, just abnormal psychology. I love weird music so much I even tried it out myself, well, in the beginning it was weird because it was unprofessional notes and stuff. Surprised people didn't compare me to whoever but I guess my music is just too chaotic to be compared to anyone really. I always like finding bands that break the mainstream sound (no hate to mainstream sound, well, no hate to mainstream rock and metal at least), bands like Mr. Bungle, Faith No More, System of a Down, yeah, those bands are my taste, even Captain Beefheart. Maybe my diversity in music styles makes me enjoy weird music like this? I can listen to anything from rock, metal, electronic, psychedelic, funk, stuff like that.
Roulette Dares live at the Big Day Out 2004 is a must watch if you want to see them at their peak, with Jon on drums and Cedric going nuts!

Also digging the the similarities reference of Led Zeppelin. Whenever someone asked me to describe the band, I always said they kinda sounded a little like Led Zeppelin with a dash of Jimi Hendrix and splash of the Doors and a hint of T-Rex 🦖.
