That's some farmer ingenuity there--figure out what you need and use whatever the heck you have around to make it work. I have to make one of these myself for our mower back home, and for all the parts mowers that my dad had bought over the years, not a single one still has the board or stick that pops out. Hoping for the best :)

Hi, JD no.5 power mower owners manual/parts manual is really available on line. Many year printings. Tells you all the set up adjustments, all the parts and operation. Very detailed. Illustrations for mounting on many different tractors. Factory color for grass board is bright red. A yellow John Deere decal for the board also available on line. Oil the cutting bar often during use. Grease the spring loaded ball joint at the pitman arm often. Top up 90/140 gear oil box before every use.. grease all points before every use. Disassemble the caster wheel arm and wheel bearing. Clean and add fresh moly grease. Great vid for a great vintage mower 👍😷🇺🇸

It is wise to check the the oil level in the #5 gear box. I grew up mowing with a JD #5, as did my brother, father, and grandfather. We checked the gear box regularly but I don't think we ever added oil. We ran #5s almost 50 years, would operate 3 at a time between Dad, Jim and I. We also had two mowers just for parts.

Timely. I am going to need to make a swath board for my No. 5 too pretty soon, myself. Curious (maybe I missed it) but what was the length? About 2 ft? I appreciate how you fabricated that piece for the stick (which I think is to fold the grass over so the next pass, you avoid plugging up the mower on the cut grass). My plan was to buy a metal snow shovel, rake, etc., and remove the section the wooden handle goes into, usually riveted on, and repurpose it, along with the handle. I have seen that online on someone elses mower restoration and seems to work well. Plan B was fabricating one, so nice to see how you tackled that. Nicely done. I was out clearing land this weekend for the hay field I have yet to grow, so I have a little time before I need the mower. lol

Thank you for all the compliments! The snow shovel handle is a great idea! The plans I found said 34”x 7”x 1”.

Second on the snow shovel being a good idea.

@@jordanmoser1379 I will admit I ended up fabricating it after the shovel I thought I had on hand to sacrifice was kind of a funky design that didn't lend itself to it. Just kind of guessed on the angle.

Here in New Zealand we call that board a swath board makes it easier mowing as it leaves a nice clean path good to see you using old machinery i grew up with

I have heard them called both but we have always called them swath boards as well. I have mowed a lot of hay with a sickle bar and you can’t hardly mow with out one especially in heavy hay!

I think you did a very good job on the swath board! Also, whilst it is very nice of you to apologise and explain your absence, please let me say that most likely most of us do not expect you to explain your private circumstances. I look forward to your next video which I hope you will post at your convenience and not ours. Keep at it (the farming), you are doing great.

I've searched and searched and unable to find a reasonable blueprint of the grass board. Would you perhappes be willing to share your designs?

I love watching the grass falling down and the sound it makes while cutting, so many memories of that, I have a video of the one we used, it's one of the first videos I uploaded
