Williams had 55 songs that reached the Top 10....an unbelievable achievement for someone who died at the age of 29. 80 years later, his music still resonates his tragic life.
Hank was born with spina bifita and was in pain from day one of his sadly short life . Pain can make you old before your time and it surely matured Hank beyond his years. Few people probably had more reason to lean on the alcohol and morphine that both sustained him and eventually killied him . He was an old soul in a young man's body and what he blessed the world with puts us all in his eternal debt .
Last time Minnie Pearl was with him a few days before he died, she was trying to raise his Spirit, and Started Singing I saw the Light, he looked up at her and Said Minnie that's the Problem there is no Light about week later he died new years day, I believe at the age of 29 .
Hank was in a lot of ways able to sing the way he did because his life was full of pain and misery. His steel guitarist was Don Helms one of the all time greats on the steel. Sam Pruett is the guy on the electric guitar. This was recorded in 1951 about 2 years or so before Hank died.
Another home run Harri. Linda Ronstadt actually turned me on to a lot of Hank. She did a great cover of this song. I think there are many covers by many artists of this song out there. Everybody wanted to be Hank. George Jones started off his career trying to sound like him, as did everybody.
I remember hearing Hank Williams Sr when i was a kid. He had such great talent. And from what i understand Hank never got a lot of what his producers and record companys made.
He was about 25 when he wrote this as a test to see if he was a really a song write for a skeptical producer. The guitar invented country music. Hank was born in 1923 and the Grand Old Opre began on radio in 1926 from Nashville with a lot of country music, blue grass, folk music etc.
That story about him writing the song on the spot for the producer is a myth...never happened. They stuck in the old movie, "Your Cheating Heart", and that's how the story got started. A lot of that movie was fiction. Also, the Opry starting on radio in 1925.
This is my clear favourite Hank Williams song, and one of my very favourite country songs ever .. The melody is so beautiful, the very relatable lyrics are heartbreakingly painful, and Hank's voice is just perfect for it .. Amazing songwriter, and like so many other talented artists, gone too soon.
That was a treat. I started trying to sing Hanks songs (seriously) before puberty. At 71 now that was a while ago. I saw his son when I was a kid of 14 in my home towns city auditorium in 1966. It was one of those package tours (albeit a small one). Lorretta Lynn , The Wilburn Brothers, and Hank Jr. He was doin Sr's music and wearing out a banjo. That was some years before the fall in Montana and the birth of the outlaw country Bosephus ( a nickname his dad gave him as a cub). Harri, sittin here and watchin you shut your eyes and drift away took me right along with you. When I was young (and wild) I can't tell you the number of times that after the whiskey would flow for a while the guitars would come out and we'd wail at the moon. From Hank, to Merle and all in btween. Thank for the memories mate.
These were Radio shows. No tv. Only a couple of video footage of Hank performing exists.. Hey Good Lookin' and Cold Cold Heart. Not sure if there is many or any others. He died when Television broadcasting was just becoming a thing.
Members of Hank's original band used to tour with Hank Jr. in the early 70's. Jerry Rivers on the fiddle and Don Helms on the steel guitar. This was taken from his radio show.
Without Audrey there could never have been a Hank ~ they had a classic love/hate relationship ~ they loved each other but couldn't be together without fighting ~ a large part of it~ Audrey wanted to be a performer & would pressure him into including her in his stage shows ~ some of the biggest venues in country music would not book him,if he intended to let her perform
When I was growing up, we would turn off the TV and Papa would get out his guitar and we would listen to him and we would sing. This was one of the songs that I loved to hear him sing. Thank you for bringing back those memories. When he died, I was not able to attend the funeral because of an abusive husband. Papa is the one who raised me and we were extremely close. RIP Papa Bear McKinney 😢. I will always love you ❤️
Hank would've turned 100 last September. Crazy to think that it's possible that he could've still been alive today. Or even in my lifetime. I can't imagine, and we'll never know, the amount of great songs we missed out on by his life ending so soon.
His songs weren't always pain songs. Hey Good looking, is an up beat happy type song. And there is a video of him doing a Live performance of it. One of a very few. Definitely worth doing a reaction to.
When I was old enough to figure out how to play CDs my very first CD was a box set of Hank Williams Senior I was told that age three I was humming along to hank senior songs
Harri, There are no words to describe the words hank penned down all those years ago. So far, you're the only reaction channel to consistently listen to the great Hank Williams. I must recommend a song of Hanks, titled "Men With Broken Hearts," recorded just after a bad divorce, and just a year before his death in 1953. Thanks for covering this great American poet so openly. - Jake Elmore
I always loved the version of this song done by Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris. It’s one of my favorites from Linda’s breakthrough album. In an interview she told the story of how her older sister loved Hank Williams and would sing this song as they washed the dishes after dinner. Great choice and reaction. Thanks Harri and Uncle Phil. 🌺✌️ Here’s Harri’s reaction to Linda and Emmylou doing this song: ruclips.net/video/TMLVyl7MDX0/видео.htmlsi=o9QJXUilP9TDWkNQ
Wow this was one of my dad's favorite songs when I was just a young kid. Hadn't heard it in decades but stirs up lots of memories. Thanks for this Harri.
He told the story how he and his wife went to that producer who was more interested in her than him. He told Hank if he was such a good writer write a dong about and man seeing a lost love for the first time. He then took Mrs Williams across the street for lunch. About an hour later he comes back and there sat Hank with his cowboy boots on top of this dudes desk and when he saw him Hank started singing this song. The rest is history
There's a rare raw video of him performing this song as a duet with Anita Carter on the Kate Smith show in 1952. About 8 months before he passed. Anita Carter is June Carter Cash's sister. June even introduces them. This was before Johnny Cash ever met June.
His friends say he suffered from untreated clinical depression, which linked with his spinal injuries fueled his addiction and formed a never ending cycle of emotional turmoil. Being married to a difficult woman didn’t help either.

Hank is the king of country music. I don't think I've ever heard a song of his I didn't like.
Me either

Love Hank. The Hillbilly Shakespeare
Uncle Phil - This was a superb and rare submission from the legendary country singer, Hank Williams. Bravo!
Linda Ronstadt does a great cover of this song. There's a great live clip of her singing it in 1976 on RUclips.

Hank is one of the best. Thanks, Uncle Phil and Harri.
he lived the pain in his songs. rough life

I love how you called Hank " the godfather of country music"!!!
That was LIVE!

"Hank" Williams died on January 1, 1953, at the age of 29
One of my fav hank sr song's
I agree with your assessment Harri. I think Hank was what they call "an old soul".
Incredible

Freakin’ sublime.
This was a recording for his radio show.

Hank is the best.
Great question who introduced the steel guitar
Classic tune. Charley Pride does a great cover.
My father's favorite. I knew every word by 5. Thanks for this!
He could sure hang on to a note when he wanted to.

You should listen to "Setting the Woods on Fire" It's one of Hank's fun upbeat songs.
Wow this was one of my dad's favorite songs when I was just a young kid. Hadn't heard it in decades but stirs up lots of memories. Thanks for this Harri.

It was live but on radio in front of a audience

Anita Carter is June Carter Cash's sister. June even introduces them. This was before Johnny Cash ever met June.
You should listen to be carful of stones you throw, tome it is hanks best song. He recorded under under name Ithink is was Luke the drifter
Please react to Don Gibson “Sea of Heartbreak.”
Heard Hank referred to as the "Hillbilly Shakespear".
You do such wonderful reactions! Thanks for this classic song.
Harri, now you need to listen to LUKE the DRIFTER, Hank's alter-ego doing spoken word songs.
No, Hank also sung many upbeat songs. Settin’ The Woods On Fire.
Very much like Patsy Cline's "I Fall to Pieces" from a few years hence.
His movie was very good. Your cheating Heart.
His friends say he suffered from untreated clinical depression, which linked with his spinal injuries fueled his addiction and formed a never ending cycle of emotional turmoil. Being married to a difficult woman didn’t help either.
Check out Jerry Lee Lewis "You Can't Help It If You Still Love Me." JLL is too much
I love Jerry Lee
Jerry Lee’s live version of You Win Again is spectacular.
the only person could cover a hank song was charley pride
Steal guitar
Most of Hanks's songs were about his wife...
This was actually the in the 40s
