My pipeliner welding instructor taught me a fast easy way to lay out the chin and forehead cut lines. He used a worn out Portaband blade by snapping off a couple of feet. I held it while he drew the Sharpie line but any spring clamp etc will do. Many welders cut the cuff off old TIG gloves to make a rear flap and glue that to the top inside (inside looks purtier). RTV peels off but a good epoxy that's not brittle works nicely. I do all my helmets because I weld outdoors often and lack of space makes Pipeliner a win. My neck is destroyed so the light weight is nice too.
I found it made the helmet heavy. I prefer welding with a pipeliner with auto lens, but then need to wear safety for glasses to chip or grind. My new tiger hood (906GY) is light and I’m going to try a miller auto lens in the flip front. Flip open to grind, down to weld. No more fogged up safety glasses.
Cool mod. That clip on the inside (right side) is there to keep the helmet from karate chopping you in the neck. There's four (or usually 4) notches it in it so you can adjust how far down you want the helmet to go. Adjust it and you'll prevent the karate chop. If the problem persists then most likely your headgear itself is probably too loose and wont stay in position. You can buy aluminum hardware (about $10 or so) which will allow you to tightening up (the knobs on each side of your helmet).
I'd recommend throwing in ether a passive gold shade 11 or an arc one auto lense shade 10 so you get an extremely clear view of your puddle as well and if you wanna lighten it up further chop it an inch under the selstrom and rivet or bolt a leather bib to the bottom of the hood :)
I like the pipeliner but it dont have the flip front. So i went to northern tool and found one that i absolutely love itself small light and has the front flip 20 dollars
atractormansday I went to northern tool today and bout a simple $12 flip front hood...no autodarkening. And a $3 gold lens for it. Im used to auto darkening though. Cant wait to try it out
Will an ADF lense get rid of possibility seeing double weld puddles because I recently bought one of these from outlaw leather and would like to keep it if its an easy fix
@@Mikey-ym6ok I didn't buy a leather from them I bought a regular pipeliner like in the video with the sellstrom installed I' heard all about those shrinking issues so I just bought a regular pipeliner to avoid that whole mess
Double puddles do happen with the Sellstrom. While it might not work for everyone, I "fixed" it by moving the gasket in the flip front in front of the clear lens.
Giovanni Espinosa I can agree. I still like and use this modded hood, but I prefer an unmodded pipeliner over it. It's really all down to personal preference.
@@SubDude350Welding thanks for the reply. Just for that I'll like the video. I have a Auto hood and a face shield and my shield is all scuffed and beat to shit. This seems like it might be a good alternative or something like this. Did you change the headgear because you hated it?
hey those sellstrom flip fronts are so heavy and awkward to fit and change out lenses, anyone try the honeywell flip up adapter, lighter easier to install & easier to change out lenses
I only used the front part of the sellstrom. Used super glue and longer screws to hold on to the hood. They are heavy, there use to be a lighter but it was discontinued.
No it’s actually called a helmet. Had a guy in the shop try to convince me it’s a hood. Nope the label says helmet it’s a helmet. Like a rod isn’t a rod it’s an electrode
@@Mikey-ym6ok A helmet protects your head. If anything fell on your head while wearing a welding hood, it wouldn't prevent it. Basically only your face is protected by this "helmet", so if anything, it should be called a mask. because masks go over your face. Also, to explain further- vehicles have hoods. Or are you going to say it's a helmet? Point is- the inventor called it a hood, so therefore it's a hood. Call it an oxymoron if you want. Also also- if you think a rod of steel is NOT a ROD of steel, you're just being stubborn. We can get nitty gritty of anything in the world if you want (like how some orange juice contains zero orange juice, etc), but stressing about things only reduces lifespan.

I also added a flip front I like it because it eliminates a face shield, I like your videos

Does the flip part have a lens protector for the actual lens
Does the adapter come with clear lenses? If I forget to flip shade down am I gonna cook my eyes?
If you forgot to flip the shade down you're an idiot that's the whole purpose of the flip up and flip down flip up to grind flip down to weld.
I need a replacement 2x41/4 high impact replacement grinding shield. Know where I can get it?

Good video
I've read people saying that they see double weld puddles with the sellstrom?

James Ray don’t do it. It makes the hood super heavy it’s a pain in the ass I hate it.

Bout to go get one 😎
Is that the point of the flip front is to avoid having to use a face shield?
Pretty much. It makes it much more convenient for smaller tasks as opposed to having to swap to a face shield.

I actually changed the head gear because the flip front added weight to the hood.
@@SubDude350Welding oh hahaha thanks alot
Thanks for the video and the input I ordered a Honeywell with a flip front

Put the tiger hood flip lense on it instead.
Tiger flip front is garbage.

It’s a hood not a helmet
+Fooshbadadcadoosh It's a force of habit calling it a helmet. Not too much I can do about it in this video, however.
