Dr. Neil Turok - Perimeter Institute
The universe revealed by observations is spectacularly simple: spatially flat, with nearly scale-invariant fluctuations. Nevertheless, there are major puzzles: what happened at the singularity? what are the dark energy and dark matter? where is the universe heading? Until LHC tells us otherwise, these conundra are the most important clues to new physics beyond the standard model. Inflationary cosmology is the most popular theory of the very early universe, but fails in important respects. The idea of a "Creation from Nothing" also seems problematic. A cyclical universe involving repeated big crunch/big bang transitions may be more attractive: I will explain recent progress in developing this scenario.

Dr Turok raises the conundrum : "Why did the big bang have density variations ?"
Maybe I'm missing something obvious... but...
Wouldn't the intrinsic uncertainty and quantum fuzziness of the physics already account for this? Wouldn't we be incredibly unlikely to see a smooth sphere ... but rather, a sort of ambiguous cloud of density possibilities averaging a sphere.
Then, according to whichever interpretation subscribed to, one particular potential fuzzy configuration would become our predecessor state leading to our observably lumpy universe? (MWI for example, then holding that each state was an equally valid ancestor state albeit in its own domain - including many temporarily perfect yet unfeasably long-lived uniform spheres somehow holding out, almost implausibly, against a hostile physics - the 'unlikely yet somewhat boring' universes)
Lets imagine though, that our big bang were shown to have been a perfect uniformly-dense sphere quite late into the event... how long could this perfect state continue to hold true given the quantum nature of the universe? After all, if a single electron needn't decide where it is... or even what side of an impenetrable barrier it is on (both) ... then surely this uniform sphere would also rapidly decohere into a fuzzy cloud of lumpy potentiality... as the existing clouds of likely position compound into ever wider margins of fuzziness due to the stacking of ever more uncertain interactions.
At whatever point we choose to imagine the probability function to collapse (and I'm not even certain it makes sense to assume it ever does) - you're going to get lumps.
IDK. Lumpiness seems a given. Can someone explain what I'm missing.
Interesting how Turok uses the phrase ..as far as we know, the universe started as a hot BB.., even in reality the earliest information we have is from BB, but surely materia didn't come to be at any point, but has always been.

"Vacuum energy is repulsive" is the most recent joke in physics, certainly not the oldest.
It's not that Einstein's equations breakdown at a singularity, it is mathematics under differentiation that breaks at that point. What we need is mathematics of zero much like Euler gave us the mathematics of i (= square root of a negative number). This singularity is introduced, I believe, erroneously, by the Cartesian system. It is my hope that I will correct it, perhaps via generalised co-ordinates with a proper definition of the Hamiltonian. I don't know.

The continuum representing the integers doesn't help us to understand infinity. Complex Analysis (Riemann sphere) enables us to represent infinity (at the poles) and defines the continuum as the circumference of a circle with infinite radius, so the continuum is no more a straight line. A circle has no beginning or no end (infinity). Riemann sphere also provide the mathematical model of quantum computing function (Maldacena), in which the binary states of 0 and 1 can be superimposed to give infinite dimensional state as intermediate between 0 and 1, fabricating a error-correcting QC at room temperature. Gee just a few weeks ago the fad in physics was to claim that time doesn't exist. Turok proposes a theory that requires time to exist before the beginning of the current universe. I like that - I think. I was always partial to time for sentimental reasons.

Don't understand how big rip or whatnot happens if energy is conserved. Presumably the vacuum energy decreases in value as space expands? Else it seems more space makes more energy makes more space makes....less sense?

That's interesting. The numbers and equations break down and our language can no longer be used to express ourselves properly. That leaves an evolved state of mind as the only solution...
IF its true, that the materia that exploded in BB will not collapse back to itself, it must be that there is significantly more materia in the universe, than has been observed so far.

i would like to know how time is really a knowable thing at the big bang, Light hasnt even been created yet so how you measure or estimate 400,000 years of one stage or another is maybe not knowable
But why would objects not scale up as well? They are filled mostly with the same space they claim is scaling up. Seems to be a logic issue here.

Suppose the universe had been 'born' radically different - and apparently hostile to life as we know it ? Would life simply not also have been shaped quite differently? Some pretty extraordinary information presented here, though he's not really precise in his use of terms. For instance early on, in saying the world is not a thing (but a function) he is using "world" analogously , and not differentiating between the level of the (macroscopic) sense-world available to our senses, which is a thing, and the quantam level, which is not. For that matter, even a function is a thing, a mathematical being

fine heart you make me smile: One ten billionth of a second is our linear notion of time in regards to the soundless big bang. The fact that the name big bang is used as a picture of description should point out our human entanglement 'with' understanding. If there is only continuation, time been a language used as a fathom of distance in regards to a part of movement of this continuation, than one ten billionth of a second relates to scale of present perceivable as viewable size, before this linear point still exists infinity. A lot can happen in the absent... separation or division springs to mind

I enjoyed the lecture, indeed, I have watched many of Mr Turok's lectures and always found him interesting, well spoken, and very good at conveying to the layman difficult concepts. I merely made light of a small mistake. I suppose doing that confirms my ignorance? We are doomed if everybody is as angry and sad as you, scanning the net looking for targets for your rage. Relax, eh?

All these brilliant minds and we can't explain the simple orbital movements of galaxies. Instead of inventing dark matter to plug up errors in our calculations how about revisiting and reexamining our flawed assumptions. Some possibly flawed assumptions 1. Speed of light is constant. 2. Redshift implies moving away. There have been experiments and or observations that contradict both.

As much as the universe can express in numbers. The finite amount of adressable matter and waves inside of the universe allows only finite huge number. Infinity is a thought, a phantasy, nothing more. There is no sample that physically proves infinity. I wrote about that in my book "A universe from something".

So God has set the bounds of light lest it pass over and consume the planets.” Consider that nearly 150 years ago, long before science had any idea of the structure of the Universe, God's prophet said that there exists “clouds round about in the heavens” This also indicates the direction and place of “our” the heavens. The center of the Milky Way. Herein lies a testable doctrine; there should be no planets in the galactic bulge. A translation from an Egyptian papyrus scroll by Joseph Smith, states that Kolob is the greatest heavenly body because it is nearest to the throne of God. The newly discoverd location of black hole CO-0.40-0.22 is intriguing, as this candidate is only 200 light-years from Sagittarius A*, our supermassive black hole. Here then is my theory:
I believe God, singularities and black holes are both everything and nothing at the same time depending on our degree of freedom (dimension) and/or reference frame, and to “go thru” a black hole and reenter the ALL (to use the Nag Hammadi vernacular) one must be absolutely pure, stripped of lust, wrath and pride thus becoming “one” with the ALL i.e. God. Furthermore, I believe as we move farther and farther away from God and Sagittarius A* the governing dynamic of light lessens until corruption grows enough to embody a spirit being such as satan and eventualy fill expanding space with darkness e.i. Dark Energy. Notice the opposition of expanding space (evil expanding into nothingness) to the disapearing space of a black hole (oneness, purity, love disapearing into everything the ALL e.i. God). It's all about direction, moving away from the galactic center is degeneration moving towards the galactic center is progression. Nevertheless, we all must make the “Hero's journey” to lesser realms and be tested, that we may thus progress back to the All “our God”. I believe this is happening all over our galaxy and others.
Joseph Smith taught us that ALL things were first created spiritually, THEN temporally. To come to terms with this, we must first come to terms with the true nature of God which is that He is literally our spiritual Father and ALL of creation at the same time and what the latest empirical evidence and theoretical physicists are telling us, whom are currently stuck in the mud; and test the revelations and doctrine of the one and only true religion on this earth that relates to these questions that we may move forwards. Yes, there are many Gods and They are ONEWhat follows are the proofs for and why I believe these revelations and doctrines are worth testing...1) They make intuitive sense, particularly when we accept that there are likely 10 dimensions of space. 2) The (0,0) on an x, y axis can be any number you want it to be depending on the angle in which you approach it, because it is a “removable singularity”. Please see Problems with Zero - Numberphile. Furthermore, 1/x=infinity goes off to infinity in opposite directions. I take these to elude to the function of a black hole from our reference frame in three dimensions moving the sublime to the divine and visa versa.
3) Is there any doubt that light is solely responsible for creating and sustaining life as we know it? The governing dynamic for ALL connected, interacting and dependent relationships from our Governments down to the quantum level of our bodies and world in our Telestial reference frame IS what game theory calls the Nash Equilibrium, which is in fact a mathematical description of the governing dynamic Christians call the Light of Christ. The governing dynamic within the Galactic bulge is very different from our 50% light and 50% dark, as there is no darkness. Thus the beings that live there are different spiritual, terrestrial beings in fact. There is no doubt that light is solely responsible for creating and sustaining life as we know it. What life does the darkness give? None, it consumes the life that dwells within it. What is in-between selfishness and selflessness? The Nash Equilibrium, our governing dynamic. Consider Maslow's hierarchy of needs. Where is it pointing to? Selflessness, The Light. What does Maslow's hierarchy of needs rest upon? Earth. What does the Earth rest upon? Supernovas (just one outshines an entire Galaxy! and is the beginning of a black hole), The Light. The beginning and the end. The Alpha and the Omega. Who did Jesus say He was just before He was crucified? “I Am The Light And The Life”.
4) It is widely accepted in physics that ALL black holes AND the beginning of the universe are singularities. This idea is strongly supported by correct doctrine if one understands the true nature of GOD. Namely that; GOD is family and GOD is and is not (please see Imagining the zeroth dimension by Rob Bryanton on RUclips). Am I saying GOD lives in a black hole? Yes and no, and so does His family ancestry and so will His posterity. I am also saying that black holes are the end and the beginning, the nothing and the ALL of creation in the same instant. This can be understood from higher dimensions, the black holes of our Universe folded back, like a manifold Klein Bottle, into the One, the All, even God
5) There is a rock solid connection between physics and religion. The Masons accept all faiths and their symbolism can be found splattered all over the USA's capital, currency, architecture and artwork. Many presidents, statesmen and proponent men through history have been Masons, Joseph Smith was a Mason. The Masons have been obsessed with the Pythagorean triangle and the numbers associated with it for at least a Millennium, it is all over their artwork, architecture, buildings etc., etc.. A little weird yes, now enters Neil Turok director of Perimeter Institute of Physics. Please see his RUclips video; The Astonishing Simplicity of Everything. Wherein, he tells us, the conclusion based on the empirical evidence gathered from all the super colliders, top physicists and mathematicians from around the world, is that all the physical laws of the universe can be described by the governing dynamic of the Pythagorean theorem that produces the probability wave function in quantum mechanics.
6) I believe that our consciousness is a removable singularity and is the missing part in Stephen Hawkins rounded off and empty universe as described by Neil Turok in; The origins of the universe. Please read Wikipedia's removable singularity.
7) Science AND religion will remain stupefied and stuck until it comes to terms with this Apocalypse or “unveiling” that is even now dawning upon us. As evidenced by today's seemingly insurmountable impasses in physics and the obviously horrific problems with world religions currently transpiring in the world. Why? Because when we understand what science is telling us about true religion and vise a versa we will have peace through the knowledge of The Truth which is; We are all brothers, Jesus is the Christ and His priesthood authority is disseminated through his church, even the Church of Jesus Christ and Latter-Day Saints. Amen
