The DUKW fifth wheel conversion - I met the old fella who built it. I believe he's passed away now. He told me it would do 65mph on the road. I dont remember how fast on the water but he said it was decent. He said he drove it to Alaska and went fishing in the ocean with it. He was a cool old guy and a genius to have built that thing

There´s a small 23-foot houseboat in the UK, that fits on a trailer, and works as a holiday, weekend boat, and camper trailer.

In the video, the narrator says he's not sure if the 6x6 blue amphibian shown in the title screen is real or not, so I thought I'd jump in and say...Yeah, it's real.
It's a ZIL-49065 "Blue Bird", designed to work with another similar vehicle ( flatbed with a crane ) and a smaller screw drive vehicle that can go almost anywhere. They work as a team and are meant to recover Soyuz capsules, usually somewhere in the deserts of Kazakhstan in Central Asia. Unlike US craft, they're not designed to land on water and their reentry accuracy was...rather vague.
This video I link to seemed the best, though it's all in Russian, it shows the interior pretty well. It would be kinda small in back, but at least it's insulated and heated. A search will find a few more videos in english with more info.
    ruclips.net/video/eg6ADLJb2EI/видео.html&t
According to what I could find, 12 of the flatbed models were made and 14 of the passenger variety.

In 2020 I was burning with this idea as well, and did some research on the topic.
While the idea is technically feasible, the result would be expensive, not only in terms of building, but in terms of maintenance and general ownership. The mechanical components would be hard to reach, the sealing and corrosion resistance is an engineering challenge. Finally, there are regulations and safety measures, both you and your vessel have to be compliant to be allowed on water.
Ultimately, ask yourself this question, how many times per year do you intend to use it as a boat? It's certainly cool to have a universal vehicle, but it's hard to imagine a use case for it, other than living in it full time and dedicating a very significant portion of your time to it.

well if you were to spend millions on an RV it may as well be your actual home since that would be all you could afford if you had access to a normal job and normal money

back in the late 80s or maybe early 1990s in melbourne florida at a boat/rv show i think it was, there was a hybrid rv/boat that looked a little odd. Imagine a large rv/school bus with a small single deck yacht shoved up it's backside like it got rear-ended. the rv cab part i think had enough cabin area for 4 seats while the 'boat' part that you would back into a boat launch ramp housed the majority of the living space. I wish i had a picture of it or something but i didn't even have a film camera.

How about a houseboat big enough and strong enough to carry a tow vehicle (something like that boat with the VW beetle on top)….
I like the idea of adapting a surplus military amphibious vehicle with a school bus topper or a fifth wheel.

The reason that no one would want a boat and camper comgination is that these combinations make crappy boats or crappy campers, wither one of which could end your life. For a million bucks, just buy a camper for half a mil and a boat for half a mill and be safe on the highway and on the water.

    • @MobileDwellings

Sadly none of these commercially built options are sea worthy. Some can do salt water but not big waves. I'm still on the hunt but at the moment it looks like the only way to get into the ocean with an Amphibious RV would be to convert something seaworthy into a home.

@@MobileDwellings thank you very much for your reply, very much appreciated.
What is the complication of an amphibious coach that is compatible with the ocean?
Some have bottoms of a boat as a starting point, so if heavy duty floats each side and frame each side possible, what else for ocean compatible amphibious coach?
Hopefully possible? Hope your search proves successful :-)

In the 1980s there was a mix of a boat and van rv known as the boaterhome. Only 21 examples of the boaterhome were created but it consisted of a ford econoline van with a 28ft boat merged on the back of the van body making it look like one unit at first glance but it could be backed up and the boat launched. There are a few videos of them here on youtube, including one showing up in a junkyard.
