  • "Spanish Ladies" is a traditional British naval song, describing a voyage from Spain to the Downs from the viewpoint of ratings of the Royal Navy.
Made famous by Quint (played by Robert Shaw) in Jaws (1975) as a goad to Hooper's anti-shark cage plan, Shaw sang the exact same song 18 years earlier when he starred as Captain Dan Tempest in The Buccaneers.

"old england" is the original lyric.....what's also interesting: the final line ("and so nevermore, shall we see you again") that shaw sings in both versions is a change too....the original line is something like, "and so we hope that, we will see you again"......makes you wonder if it was shaw's idea to change the lyric.....i've never seen the earlier film, but the new lyric certainly works way better for Jaws...really creates a real sense of fatalism, and an allusion to how things will end up for the Cap'n ^^

I love this. I never knew this was a callback to an old movie he was on n as a young actor. Amazing.
This is the kind of thing that could only happen in the old days of filmmaking. Because I would bet that it wasn’t in the script. Either Shaw remembered it and was singing it on set , or someone saw that old film and asked him to sing it. Then they shot Hooper’s reaction to the song which made for a really funny moment in the film, and solidified their relationship on the boat, of the old captain who is constantly teasing the young Marine Biologist who is fed up with it, but has to keep tolerating it. It’s a perfect moment that almost certainly wasn’t written. But on the day, Spielberg got it and put it in. Today, with all the special effects and green screens , everything is too planned out, and you don’t get these little touches of greatness.
Fun facts; he is NOT playing the guitar in the old scene. It’s dubbed in.
It’s a public domain song, so it cost them nothing to use it in the film.

The look on his face when he's singing is wonderfully creepy in both versions. In Jaws, the look on his face says that Hooper (edit: I originally wrote Cooper 😅) is going to die if he uses the shark cage. In The Buccaneers, I have no idea of the characters motivations, but his face suggests, to me, something sinister. And to be immediately followed up with another character asking what he's so happy about really drives that idea home. Now I really want to watch that movie.
Side Note: I would kill to have movies today made with young and old clones of Robert Shaw. His face is perfect. Tragically, however, I have already typecast him in my head as a villain. But who watches movies for the good guy? You're there to see the villain. Or you're one of those weirdos who like sunshine and blue skies. Bleh.

His character was unmatched except by other giants like Jack Nicholas, Vincent Price, Hale Holbrook, etc. Robert Shaw, made rhe movie Jaws worth it's weigh in classic horror films.

In September 2017 ( Ft Lauderdale,) an old timer deep sea explorer and world wide diver , lived in an apartment on the beach and was on his way out with lots of serious medical problems. We had a huge hurricane bearing down and he said he will die like a man in this storm. Captain Mickey sang that song to me with a big smile and had his bottles of Old Grandad by his side, like some crazy Pirate. That was my brother and he survived only an hour after the storm. He had refused to go to the hospital as usual. Favorite saying..... Death by natural causes is..... for pussies.
