Thanks, Louise! Yeah, they do really well once they get planted in the ground. The only thing I should have done differently was I should have got it planted a little bit earlier in the year. That’s a great way to overwinter bananas! I would do the same if I could… but it’s to cold here. So I dig the plants up and store them bare root in the dark garage for 3 months.
I mean you could probably do the same with this species (Musa Basjoo), although in a zone below 9a/8b you'd probably need to add a lot more insulation. I probably couldn't get away with just a bit of fleece around an edible banana, as they are way more cold sensitive than this plant. Even an Orinoco, which are pretty cold tolerant, would probably need more protection than this in my climate. It may survive at the root level though and push up pups in Spring (something I may experiment with).
Nice! My Miss basjoo has survived really well this winter too, and has a new leaf coming already. It lost its fleece protection in the storms in February but I’m hoping we won’t be due anything too cold from now!

you won't have any problems growing this plant in your mild winter climate. I'll protect mine in a similar way and temperatures will get to at least -18C over winter!
Wow, -18°C that's very cold 🥶Yeah luckily it doesn't usually get much colder than a few degrees below 0 here. It is a very hardy plant, especially when protected. I'm guessing in a colder winter than our average my protection would probably not be enough to save the pseudostem. But the corm will survive underground and should push up new pups in spring.

It depends on when you get hard frosts in your area, but typically in my location, it's been late November to mid-December. Is it OK if I use a waterring system, same we use for vegatables, etc, esp. when being away for 3-4 months every year or rely solely to raining water or water it once a week? Much obliged.....! Hi, thanks for watching! I don’t water it at all during winter. It will get rainwater, but since it goes dormant it shouldn’t need any water. If it stays warm enough to keep growing in winter in your location, then it will need to be watered regularly, but if it stays cold it will stop growing and go dormant and can survive with no water for quite a while.

It likely will depend on how large the plant is, ideally, you’d want it to be at least as big as mine was in this video, but the larger it is the better chance it will survive. Also, I’m assuming the temperatures you mentioned are in Celsius? We typically only get to around -3°C or -4°C briefly over winter for a few nights, occasionally slightly lower. Although last December we did get to -7°C, Musa basjoo should be able to survive those temperatures if it has been given enough cold protection, although this plant was larger than in this video as it had been in the ground for another year. If you regularly get down to -10°C you might want to go with the straw and cage method of protection, as that will add more protection than just fleece.

@@lukecicero4430 Ah, yeah that's quite a bit cooler than -10°C (14°F) lol. Yeah give it as much straw as you can, you could probably use some leaves on top of that too. Some people put tarps over the top to stop the wind from blowing the mulch away.
This particular one won't produce edible fruit. If it does stay alive until fruiting size it will likely produce seedy fruit. It is very cold hardy though, so it's a type that I can grow in our cool climate without too much protection, it also grows pretty well in cool summers (which we have here). I do have quite a number of different types of edible bananas that I keep inside over winter and will be planting outside this year. Some may be staying in containers outside too. I'm trying to see which edible variety will grow the best here in the UK. I think Dwarf Orinoco and Rajapuri are my best bets. So those are a couple of the plants I will be trialing in ground this year.

Our winter was mild enough that it may not have even needed any protection, but I wanted to just be on the safe side. If you don't want to protect the pseudostems and the winter is cold enough to kill it to the ground, then it should push up new pups to replace it in the following spring anyway, it's just that you will have much smaller plants. Eventually, after a few years of keeping the stem alive, they should flower, although the bananas on this plant aren't edible.

I planted some of mine last month and winter is coming quick will mine still be okay if I overwinter? We get like -5 -10 here
