- This poster was created exclusively for the cast & crew of the movie as a gift from the producers. That being the case, I'm afraid I don't have any prints to sell (but thanks for asking!).
The piece is painted with Holbein gouache on Strathmore Wet Media Board. The main brush I used was a Silver Brush Black Velvet Round #8 (but I also use various sizes). The first section is sepia gouache, applied as a thin wash, to lock down all the details. It's painted over a digital print that I transferred to the board by printing on acetate, then burnishing.

I seriously put him up there with Alex Ross...
The 2 Tribes Of Israel i was thinking the same thing
Absolute perfection! It’s such a thrill to watch you paint and create. Thank you for sharing your talent with us.
Oh my gouache!
so blessed with talent and skill love your work ..hope to see you in person one day
Never mind. I looked it up myself and you were very fortunate to work for Marvel. Nice work.
OMG!!It's beautiful
As if these actors don't get paid enough, the freebies they're given can be mind blowing.
Nice work, Lucky them. :)
Amazing job and I agree with fmkguy guy, let this rolling for 2 hours and I will watch, again and again. Great job, Great Job.
You're the man. Master level
Stunning work
Outstanding! Beautiful Cap print!
Incredible work Paolo!
SO STUNNING! Amazing work!
long time no see on youtube we need more lol
This is amazing!!
Amazing work, loved your run on daredevil, was all this in one go or a compilation of days of work ?
Ha! Good one. Weeks of work.
Rewatching this again. Marvelous to say the least!
On another point, how do you get a smooth transition in color with gouache? Whenever I paint, it tends to be blocky.
Thank you! With this piece, almost all the smooth transitions are done with just one color at a time with minimal mixing. That's because I use it more like watercolor (as opposed to traditional gouache techniques). If you're interested, I show more details on painting gradients on the Batman '89 video.
@@PaoloRivera Wow! Thanks for the reply, man! I'll definitely watch that video! Thanks again!
I can watch this so many times, you're so great. What kind of tape are you using when doing the borders? How does it not rip the paper when you remove it?
It's commonly known as artist's tape. It's just a low-tack masking tape. But you still have to be careful :) Always test first!
Hi Paolo, I know this video is old but I was hoping you could tell me what the technique is called where you lay down the values all in brown and then add the color on top. Thank you!
Hi, Tyler - It's a technique as old as painting! I usually just call it an underpainting, but one of the technical terms is grisaille - though that means grey, specifically. I use sepia or burnt umber because it's more difficult to achieve warm tones once you switch to opaque passes. Hope that helps!
Bravo. Bravo. E ancora bravo. Troppo bravo.
+Paolo Rivera As an aspiring comic book artist, I have a few questions, if you would be gracious enough to spare the time to answer.
How relevant is a Fine Art or Design degree on a potential recruit? Is it a requirement or merely a plus point?
Also, is it possible to work for Marvel from abroad? Or is moving to the USA the only option?
Grande dedicação em nível de excelência demonstrando o poder deste job!!!
I agree that this is very well done but your not the original creator of these characters, right? So do you have permission to paint this or is it for your own personal collection that isn't to be sold? And if you make a video of you painting these characters and you earn money from this video, does that count as plagiarism? Not trying to be an ass I just really want to know the answers.
Is this watercolor? Amazing artwork!
Dana Obera
It is Gouache, watercolor, and acrylic on illustration board.
Está increíble!
Any advice for someone who is a beginner in gouache?
+MultiCastorFiber I like the Sta-Wet palette - it has a sponge that keeps the paint wet. Also, there are many different ways to use gouache. I start out using it very thinly, almost like watercolor, and only do opaque passes once I know what I want.
Without a sketch before? damnnn
There's a transferred print sketch that I'm painting over. It's not as crisp as I'd like, but it's good enough. Lately, I've been printing directly on board at a local shop.
What is burnishing....??
If this was to be sold as is, how much would something like this be priced?
+Miya Kimi A ton! But I'm not willing to part with it yet... it'll be my retirement.
Cold or Hot Press wet media board? I'm guessing hot, right?
The Wet Media Board series doesn't seem to specify, but I'd say it's right in between.
Did someone say this should be available as a print???...no???!!! Well it should be!!!
wow is this water colour?
This gouache - it's like watercolor, just opaque. Thanks!
amazing work! :)
I was jut wanting to know what do you mean by pre-work
There's a lot of research and planning that goes into something like this. I have to collect all the reference, select my favorites, seek alternatives if I can't find what I need. Then it's a matter of drawing and compositing all the elements together in a pleasing way. Only then can I transfer to board and start the painting process, which took around 90 hours (and is what's featured in the video).
How long does this take
Including pre- and post- work, 148 hours.
Paolo Rivera cool, thanks
can u share ur tools with us ?
In this video, I'm mostly using the Silver Brush Black Velvet series of brushes. I talk more about brushes in my other videos - just click on my profile for the list. Thanks!
Paolo Rivera Thank you for sharing your knowledge and techniques. Congratulations.
what is the purpose of brown tones?
That's the underpainting. Its chief purpose is to establish the forms, locking down every single detail before making the commitment to color. Simply put, it's easier to correct things with just one color than it is when something is fully rendered.
@@PaoloRivera do you use watercolor Or goauche?
@@fabiocaravieri5121 Mostly gouache. This poster is all gouache, I believe. Sometimes I'll use watercolor as a glaze over a gouache underpainting, though.
@@PaoloRivera I would like to know if it works with watercolor or just gouache?
@@fabiocaravieri5121 The underpainting? That's usually gouache.
Better than Alex Ross
I dunno about that. He's definitely one of my biggest influences, though... inspires me to this day.
