The place you passed in Marathon with the old cars and old VW van is my friend Dan Picasso’s place. Very cool dude. Old punk rock drummer, who’s a mechanic. I refer to him as “Air-cooled Dan” because he specializes in old air-cooled VW’s. Last time I talked to him he was working on two old Porches (late-50’s models). I met some very cool folks in Marathon. Many people in there have bought those old, crumbling houses, manage to keep a section of them, then build new construction onto or around the old parts, resulting in a very cool, rustic modern look. I figure soon the real estate will go through the roof since it’s already becoming a trendy arts outpost.

Our rock club from Springfield, Missouri went down to Alpine for four days to hunt rocks in the area. (about three years ago) It is a part of the country that I have never been to before and I found it very interesting. Alpine is a great little town. There are "spook lights" in nearby Marfa. Lots of interesting wildlife all over also, like the desert fox and road runners that we saw.
You have some very nice shots of the churches, court houses and the murals. Your artistic self is again coming out in this video. That is what makes them a joy to watch. Thanks for more entertainment than corporate media could ever produce. Your craftsmanship is outstanding. Thank you again.
A great way to tour this area is by staying at a set of really cool old hotels in the region. The Gage in Marathon, The Holland in Alpine, The Limpia in Ft Davis, The Pisano in Marfa and El Capitan in Van Horn.. 5 hotels in 5 nights and explore each town, the sights & restaurants while there. Also Alpine has an Amtrak station along The Sunset Limited route.
Sounds kool. that's something I would try. I was in this area a couple of years ago on my way to and back from Big Bend, but I didn't really have time to check em out. I pretty much just drove by them and only stopped for gas and food at a couple of places. They all seemed really kool and interesting and i thought about going back with more time to check em all out. I did stay at Marfa for the night after going to check out the lights, but I didn't get to see any. 😔 It was still a great experience. The night sky was really dark and amazing there already. It was a good preview for my destination. The next morning I drove around town a little bit, bought a burrito from Marfa burrito 😋and headed to Big Bend. Really kool part of Texas.
I did the Trost hotel tour: Pisano, El Capitan, Gage, and Del Norte in El Paso. Spent a week driving between locations with visits to Big Bend, Guadalupe, Pecos, Alpine etc. great trip.
👍The Jeff Davis County Courthouse is so well kept that it looks recently built of prefabricated painted wood and dye-cast plastic, rather than from stone cut a hundred years ago. 👍
Fort Davis looks so completed now, 50 years ago went there as a child, the houses were all still in ruins, and open access to the ruins, we tried to imagine what it was like when the crumbling shells were new. The restoration is much cleaner and more nicely appointed than we imagined. The fort's original wood was used by nearby residents after it was abandoned for building, as there were few large trees nearby. The old house at Bakers Crossing ranch on the devils river used a good portion of the timbers from fort Davis in the construction, per family records and photos. Nice to revisit the fort and see the final renovation, thank you for sharing 💙

Beautiful country in the Chihuahuan Desert! Had to chuckle when the hearse rolled past you. Ft. Davis is fantastic! Would love to explore it. Marathon is thought provoking. Thanks.
I love the Big Bend area of Texas. The Gage Hotel is wonderful and the town has another place called the Marathon Motel and RV Park which you passed about a mile before you entered the town limits which is one of those old roadside motels brought back to life. Marathon, like Alpine, is indeed an artsy place. Marathon is the closest place to lodge if you visit Big Bend National Park and enter through the northern entrance. Since you drove all that way and were so close to it, I certainly hope you saw Big Bend National Park. You lose cool points if you didn’t. It’s truly amazing.
I had hoped to go to Sul Ross University in Alpine when I was in high school. I ended up at UT Arlington. Marfa is just up the road. It is becoming a town of haves and have nots. Art galleries and old trailers.
Before you leave for Marfa... you need to see Kokernot field in Alpine... An unbelievable minor league ball park... (Sul Ross plays there)... and cruise down Murphy Street in Alpine. Looks like an old west front street.

Fort Davis is actually cool. It’s about 5000 feet above sea level. Wealthy people from East Texas would spend the summer there to get out of the heat. ( in the days before air conditioning)
After going to a star party up at the local observatory, we would stay at one of the hotels in town. On a couple of occasions we had to check ourselves in and out since there wasn't anybody at the front desk, but that just adds to the charm of the town. Across the street the restaurant served a wonderful country breakfast and I was surprised how many people showed up. I lived in Fort Davis in the 60’s, second grade through sixth grade. That wasn’t very many years, but was a huge part of my childhood. Good memories! We saw Lady Bird Johnson dedicate the fort as a National historic site. We later moved to Alpine. Not so good memories there.
A fabulous area…thank you so much for sharing real America with us I love these small towns, my roots are from small town Illinois, yet so many similar things.
That Albion E. Shepard House you passed, owned and rooms rented by the Gage Hotel: Maritime ship captain, Captain Albion E. Shepard, arrived in the region as a railroad surveyor, acquired much land in the area and founded and named the town Marathon in 1882 after recalling from earlier travels that the nearby mountainous landscape had a striking resemblance to Marathon, Greece. Built in 1890 and fully restored in 2012, the classic colonial-style Captain Shepard House includes a stately two-story five-bedroom main building and an exterior two-room carriage house. The main, and off property, building includes one bedroom on the main floor and four on the second floor, with private stone tile baths. The four rooms located upstairs are accessible by stairs. The house showcases handsomely furnished common rooms, which include a sitting room, TV room, dining room, butler’s kitchen, and second floor porch. Due to the historic nature, Captain Shepard House and Carriage House rooms are not pet friendly
We went this area of Texas a few years ago. We stayed in Alpine. Between visiting Big Bend National Park and other activities, we had a good time. We plan go again next spring. This area is a little cooler than the rest of Texas due to the altitude and low humidity.
Great video Joe. Thank you so much for these. You have taken me home. These are all my stomping grounds Though my place is much closer to Terilingua my buddy and I would drive up and get a room and enjoy a weekend in what we called ( big city living) LoL 😂 we have taken our horses to Ft. Davis area for trail rides. And for a little bigger time we would go to Alpine. And then those special trips to Marathon where the numbers were much more in our favor even then. LoL believe me when you spend a couple months in the middle of nowhere where our places were at this is big city living. LoL 😂. From what I personally know those higher home prices use to be due to the fact that most of the people there were lifelong residents and they didn’t sell out cheap. I’m more homesick with each of these videos. But I really appreciate you doing them. It’s been around 2 years since I’ve been home other than a quick check in. So these are special to me. Thanks. Great job!! Safe travels my friend and keep filming I’ll definitely keep watching looking forward to the upcoming ones.
Very enjoyable video. Some overlooked tidbits: Fort Davis, at a mile high, boasts "the coolest 4th of July in Texas" because it has the coolest temperature in the state at that time of year. Alpine is around 4400 feet and Marathon is about 4100. There is virtually no humidity in this part of the state. There is always live music somewhere in Alpine and the town has a large music festival in late July called Viva Big Bend, which involves +/- 40 bands and solo/duo acts performing in venues across Alpine, Marfa, and Fort Davis over four days.

A great video as always, fascinating and relaxing! Thanks so much, Joe and Nic.😊💗
Thank you CL!!! ❤️
I was born in Ft Davis a long time ago. Let me just say, the smallpox and polio inoculations were new. Haven't had any of those diseases. Lol
I lived in Fort Davis in the 60’s, second grade through sixth grade. That wasn’t very many years, but was a huge part of my childhood. Good memories! We saw Lady Bird Johnson dedicate the fort as a National historic site. We later moved to Alpine. Not so good memories there.
I was considering Alpine, but how could I pay TX property taxes living on Social Security? BTW, what's wrong with Alpine?
The West has its' own art/architecture. That flavor which we lived in on the Saturdays of our youth. Roy, Hoppy and Gene were our heroes.
Good show. Always interesting.
As you make your way south, you might consider checking out San Diego, Texas. Fits the theme of your channel.
15:57 nice Church constructed with the rock from around there. Beautiful inside. Awesome tour
Hope to explore the Big Bend area one day, It's beautiful desert. Raised in El Paso but never really spent much time in this area.
Thank you for visiting Fort Davis!
That's Cool!😎 But I do wonder🤔 why you never see the alley cats creating the art?😹
Thanks for the video guys, I love your channel 😊
The separate kitchens, also called summer kitchens where I grew up, kept the heat away from the rest of the house during the hot weather.
Go and visit Valintine, Texas- population 67. It's in that area!!! You'll love it!!
Those shelters are so cool
My wife and I went to ft Davis park for my 50th birthday loved the park spent the night there
A fabulous area…thank you so much for sharing real America with us I love these small towns, my roots are from small town Illinois, yet so many similar things.
Interesting.
Joe - I had hoped that you and Nicole would have stopped for dinner at that hotel you visited!!
Enjoyed every bit of this trip.. very informative and beautiful
Thank you, Robert!
Another great video. I was impressed with FT Davis. The mountains and the old fort were beautiful.
WOW great video! Quite interesting place.
We went this area of Texas a few years ago. We stayed in Alpine. Between visiting Big Bend National Park and other activities, we had a good time. We plan go again next spring. This area is a little cooler than the rest of Texas due to the altitude and low humidity.
I love these vids!
Such interesting towns and stunning scenery! Thank you for showing us!
Cool, I'm glad that you are enjoying them. :)
Those places are beautiful, the open country is awesome, love the mountains.
