How to Press a Wide Receiver at the Line of Scrimmage

  • One of the many defensive tactics you can employ as a defensive back is the art of pressing. When you press a wide receiver, your job is not to hold them at the line of scrimmage, but rather to disrupt their route enough to throw them off their intended path and give your fellow defenders extra time to get into the backfield for a sack or tackle-for-loss.
To press a receiver, you must first set yourself up in an athletic football position at the line of scrimmage, face-to-face with your opponent. Make sure you are attentive, balanced and comfortable, because you will need to react quickly if you want to efficiently defend your athletic opponent.
When the play begins, start your press by taking a quick jab step toward the inside with your inside foot, followed by a clearing motion with your inside hand. This combination is intended to cut off any inside moves that the receiver might try. Once you’ve defended their initial release, give some ground to the receiver and shadow their route for optimal coverage.
Naturally, not all wide receivers are going to release to the inside, so defending the outside step is just as important to a defensive back. To accomplish this, repeat your jab step and clear, but when you go to guard their release, aggressively mirror their route and narrow their space between the open field and sideline. This gives less room to play with and essentially takes that receiver out of the game for that play.
Pressing your opponent as a defensive back requires quick reactions and a knowledge of how to disrupt your receiver’s intended plans. Follow these Pro Tips and make an impact on the gridiron this football season.

As soon as the ball is snapped and before the receiver can cross the neutral zone, can a defensive player push him to the ground?
