As a Bolivian who witnessed all the events live, I can attest that this was the worst false flag operation ever conducted. First, the entire police detachment that guards the government building 24 hours a day decides to take the day off. Then, a few dozen soldiers cordon off the area for a couple of hours. Meanwhile, the armored vehicle crashes into a gate of the building, but instead of entering, the soldiers stay outside waiting. Later, the president, from within the same building, appoints the new commanders of the armed forces, who, fortunately, were all in the building. The supreme commander then orders the insurgent troops to withdraw, and they, of course... leave. End of the coup.
It was actually embarrassing. Yes, there was incompetence, but on the part of the government, which couldn't organize a false flag operation as God intended.

Is the international community really this gullible? The plan was obviously orchestrated by the president himself with the help of Zúñiga in an attempt to raise his flailing popularity. When have you ever seen a coup attempt without firing a single gunshot and resolved by having a conversation? It was all a show, Zuñiga admitted to it himself because he didn't expect to be detained. But Arce got what he wanted, apparently everyone is buying the whole thing while the country is still in economic and social turmoil. Today I am truly ashamed of my country's government.

Coups tend to be quick. Most are decided within 8 hours. Possibility 1: Coup fails and incumbent government survives. Coup leaders either flee or are improisoned. Possibility 2: Coup units take over the capital and arrest the incumbent leader. They wave their guns around and everyone obeys. To me this is the weird one. Coup plotters almost never have military units take control of the countryside since they rarely control the whole military and taking over the capital took every soldier at their disposal. So while it makes sense bureaucrat in the capital will obey the guys with guns, if you're some bureaucrat in the boonies, when you hear guys with guns took over the capital, why would you obey the far away force? If I were them, I'd just think I was out of a job instead of thinking "oh... guess that's the new boss." Possibility 3: Neither side back down. The incumbent manages to rally some loyalists, but not enough to quash the coup. Both sides actually start fighting a civil war. So odds are high if a coup started when you went to sleep, by the time you wake up one of those three happened.

Seems like a lot is wrong in Bolivia. From politicians breaking the law by going against their constitution, to insubordinate generals trying to go above their station and take matters into their own hands. That General should've maybe made a press conference instead, condemning this instead. He'd likely be fired either way, but it would mean less people turn against your cause.

For all those who comment without knowing the situation, here from Bolivia I will put you in context:
What happened yesterday was not even close to being a "coup d'état", not a single bullet was fired, the people did not take to the streets and make the military retreat, the military retreated on their own, everything seemed strangely armed and At the time of his arrest, the general admitted that he was armed at the request of the president to raise his popularity. We all here know that the general and the president are close friends, to the point of playing basketball games on the same team from time to time.
