This is probably one of the few, very few videos that actually physically instruct on prephonatory tuning without over using technical terms that are vague.
This video definitely helped me a lot since I have a bad habit of over inhaling, staying open/pause, and then singing, which could make me constrict to hell and make me sound scratchy and tight and limited and tired fast.
I still need to practice on relaxing to let the body do it’s thing and breathe and instantly sing before that “pause”.

This was a happy accident of a find that someone shared on Reddit. Half the battle for me “doing” is having someone explain it in a way I can understand that “clicks” for me. I think this is it. Thank you!! I subscribed and gave your insta a follow. 😊

Yay! My coach is teaching me to put my voice above the head - but she doesn't really have any steps on how to do so, so it's a full on focus - concentration based, I am able to get it at times but I can't keep the sensation above the head- BUT I can maintain that resonant voice sensation from the head down to my eye area, which I would assume is the mask area? It doesn't sound nasal at all and she's okay with it some times because the benefits she talks about singing above the head, I am getting it still when it's in my eye area, but we still practice staying above the head - I'll try out your steps and see if I can maintain it! :)

Vaughn, thank you for the comment I appreciate it, Try placing a finger/hand on your upper cheeks (or your forehead) this usually helps direct the sound and feel the vibrations. Let me know when you try it!

    Yes! Inner smile! 🙂
The only time when stopping the breathing before singing might be beneficial is, when someone got used to a push when starts singing. That push immediately raises the larynx and places the voice in the front. So in these cases I suggest my students to stop and pause for a second, focus on the larynx and relax, and begin singing after this pause.
I employ this only temporarily, and only in certain cases, when needed, until the student eliminates the push. Seems like it never created bad habits regarding breathing. I also keep emphasizing that this is not how we breath when we sing.
Do you have any better method than this?
Also, I teach to "know" the note in the throat before singing. We don't want to start singing "blind", just to realize after the first note what changes should be made - it's too late. What was sung, is already out. Cannot be taken back. So it's essential to know the note before making it sound!
Thanks for your videos. They are so focused on tiny, but super important topics!

Sofia, thank you for the comment. I've heard some teachers make their students do a break after breathing in for educational purposes. From experience, I never found this technique to be a positive thing, instead, I prefer relying on Spontaneity and having a natural flow grow from the lungs out to the head. The concept of "inalare la voce" is to create a vacuum of air coming in and going out.

Hi great video, however when i do this, my voice sounds too soft, unless i add alot of pressure which makes me too loud for singing inside ^^ can you make a vodeo on how to add more bite to the voice while still having an open throat? I can personally do it, but in multiple different ways, and all of them makes singing harder. I think i am moving the root of my tongue instead of just closing the vocal folds harder..

Thank you for your comment. Imagine that you wish to sing towards yourself, or sing in the direction of where your forehead is. This might help you focus the sound without overdoing it and without straining or putting « pressure ». Ideally I would hear your voice and help you.

This is super clear, thanks so much for sharing! Just one question though, when you mentioned lazy laryx like an elephant, did you drop your larynx to give an example?

    • @TheVoiceGuru
      @TheVoiceGuru  3 года назад

Yes, I was pulling the larynx down to provoke this deep sound

@@TheVoiceGuru i thought so. I have a a terribly dopey voice but i suppose raising the larynx isnt a healthy way to combat the dopeyness isnt it? :(

@@viktorfang1234 I'd have to hear your voice to tell you if it is "dopey". The positioning of your larynx is connected to its natural placement. I offer 30-minute assessment sessions for free if you're interested: www.johnthevoiceguru.com/30-minute/
