As a resident of a small island serviced by BC Ferries, they run a good service making good use of the assets they have. The biggest problem is crew shortages, ferries often don’t load to capacity because they are missing a number of deckhands, engineers, and officers. Pay higher wages and you will attract more consistent people.
We need a permanent crossing between Vancouver island and the mainland. I avoid going to the island because of BC Ferries. It's expensive, it's a huge waste of time even when things do happen on schedule, but often they don't, and it's simply inconvenient, boring. It feels like the 80's on most ferries. Huge line-ups to get food... I had the misfortune of being delayed at the Schwartz Bay terminal for a couple of hours last year (on top of the time you are supposed to arrive before the sailing), and the place looks/feels like a run-down bus station in a middle of nowhere - not a large ferry terminal to/from the BC capital. It's sad... but that's ok - don't fix it - build a tunnel/bridge.
Our island family is watching very closely. Most curious about how BCF plans to respectfully deal with the 2 current BC Human Rights complaints against them for systemic failure to protect and fairly support employees.
BC Ferries was pretty decent until the Fast Cats were forced onto them by the NDP Government. This caused alot of financial issues and the solution to that pretty much ruined the company. The quasi privatization and massive corruption was really the final nail in the coffin. I can imagine the next "solution" will even make things worse.

Or use technology to automate so you 1) need less ppl 2) reduce cost of the service.

If you want a bridge then stay on the mainland there's already too many big city attitudes ruining our island already.
I don't think that many people want a bridge, that would ruin so much 💀
