Oh... CC has been reusing tropes for a while now and it goes back to TID honestly, tho I didn’t realize it the first time i read that. Like, to the point that I can already tell you how she's gonna resolve TLH, even tho i haven't read Chain of Thorns yet. Don't get me wrong, i know I'll love it but i think her editor has kinda fluffed off since Clockwork Princess or there abouts (it's when i started noticing her overwriting problem).

2023 was the year where I read almost exclusively comics and graphic novels, with one exception being a travel guide called, “A Gentleman Abroad”, which was 200+ pages long, but very quick to read, and it’s one of my least-favorite reads of the year because of how dull and basic it was, like there was hardly any good info about countries and cultures. Also, another least-favorite read was the Shazam 2 prequel one-shot comic, and it had the worst artwork imaginable, and the stories weren’t all that great.

same agree with the shadowhunter fatigue im unhauling all of my shadowhunter books bc i need the money and space and dont plan to re read em tbh i also didnt like the last hours trilogy i think it was when i read em tht i realised the fatigue and the repetition and how long they are and i feel like nothin happens.. i was dreading readin chain of thorns and i was bored and i read it like 2 months ago or so.. im lookin forward to read wicked powers trilogy but it will take a while for em to come out which sucks in a way bc then more time it will have passed since ive read the dark artifices.

I definitely understand the Shadowhunters fatigue. I've only read the first book of the past two series, and even though I will forever support Cassandra Clare, I feel like I've grown out of the Shadowhunters. Reading them in my early 20s is definitely different from reading them now in my early 30s.

I also put Chain of Thorns on my list of disliked books this year. It was just entirely TOO LONG. The character drama was boring and I hate the miscommunication trop/ just no communication at all. Also a major character died and then they barely mention it again. Also, she did Matthew dirty. And I totally agree with you that nothing was happening in this book, I really felt like that as well

  • @otherworldlyfiction

I know exactly how you feel about the Shadowhunters. I consider myself a fan (and as a teen I was obsessed), but the latest books didn't hit the same for me. A part of me wants to blame it on my getting older, but I still loved the second newest trilogy in the world, The Dark Artifices, so more of my critiques (and I have a few) would be for The Last Hours. I still like the series, but I really wanted to love the later books and couldn't. I get what you mean about the same tropes coming up too. Like, maybe the Blackthorn's could take a break from attempting necromancy? 😅

“I let out the biggest UGH I didn’t know I was holding.” 🤣 New favorite quote!
My least favorite of the year was Small Game by Blair Braverman, which for a good 3/4 of I was really into, but then everything it had been building up to just… fizzled out… and then it just ended abruptly in literally one page that went “Oh yeah everything was fine, they never found out what actually happened but it was probably the most mundane, idiotic thing you can imagine, there was a lawsuit and they all lived happily ever after the end.” I was LIVIDDDDDDDD. I don’t think I’ve ever been more infuriated by a book’s ending.

I very much agree with Chain of Thorns. I thought that a lot of the Last Hours series was just a recycle of past Shadowhunter characters & tropes, with way too many pages. The only thing I found interesting was Matthew and he was done so dirty in favor of her golden child Jace-Emma character (James). I plan on continuing the Shadowhunter books tho because the “last” series in the world is about Ty who I love.

Great video! My bottom books for 2023 are:
Immortal Longings by Chloe Gong (dnf) - it was fun at first but the plot-holes were so glaring!
The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K LeGuin - I know this is a classic and a lot of people love it, but it was just so boring for me
Verity by Colleen Hoover - this was just pointless

one of my worst books of the year was a german summer romance called "verliebt im café inselglück" (translated smth like "in love at the café island-happiness"). i didn't expect much from it, just a lighthearted to listen to in summer, but somehow it still managed to disappoint me. i wanted to scream at the main character sometimes, because she simply didn't communicate with her fiance and instead assumed the worst of intentions all of the time.

Hi Jesse, I agree with you about all the books written by Sally Rooney. I tried to read her books, but simply either she is not my type of writer, or I don't like the plot, or the books are too boring for me. I don't want to offend her fans, but I'm simply not impressed.😮
So, we both share exactly the same opinion: the worst book I've read 2023 was "Wonderful world, where are you" !

2023 Had ACOTAR as my lowest rated book I think. The book and I did not get along so severely it is one of maybe five books I have ever rated a 0.25. If it hadn't been the only applicable book I could find for a challenge I was doing it would have been a DNF (because I hate having to rate books lower than a 3)

My worst read of 2023 was also my first read of 2023 😂 I rated it one star, which I don't think I've ever done before. It's non-fiction, semi-academic, but SO BADLY WRITTEN, it actually angered me. Like... An actual sentence in the book was 'We have [...] not added many footnotes. [...] [F]actual assertions that would normally have citations are, for the most part, not controversial and easily verifiable.' ??? I'm still angry 😂 and this was written by an academic! Absolutely terrible. And aside from that, it was filled with logical fallacies and bad writing, I was honestly very surprised it even got published AND has pretty good ratings everywhere.

Shadowhunters try to uncover who is behind the killings that have been happening recently. By the way, the villain is 100% involved with demon activity. Meanwhile, two Shadowhunters are already in love in book 1. Oh but they cannot be together until the last book because until then, external factors will make the guy believe he cannot be with the girl.
