Real, actual activation!
This video took more than three attempts to render, and took almost two hours.
I love the way the cities sirens used to sound, it gives me goosebumps every time I look back at this video.
Almost a year after the fact, Sedgwick county upgraded their system, going with ATI. The county replaced four thunderbolts, including the famous Lawrence Dumont Stadium thunderbolt 1000T, which will be left inside of the light tower farthest to the south.
I loved the system while it lasted, and this was it's last activation before upgrades.
SIRENS HEARD:
Whelen Vortex R-4
3 Thunderbolt 1000s (Terminal 4, 5, 1)
4 Thunderbolt 1000Ts (Terminal 5, 3, 5, 4)
2T22A
(An epic mix!)
The sirens went of at exactly 9:27, and 10:16 PM To sound both a Particularly Dangerous Situation, and then the dreaded Tornado Emergency.
NWS Was addressing this situation as follows:
"At 9:27 PM, A very large and Extremely dangerous tornado on the ground near Clearwater, Moving Northeast at 25 Miles an hour. Repeating: A very large and Extremely dangerous tornado is on the ground. To protect your life, move to shelter immediately. This is a Particularly Dangerous Situation."
Later Transmission:
"At 10:14 PM, The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a Tornado Emergency for: West Wichita, East Wichita, North Wichita, South Wichita, Wichita Mid-Continent Airport, Southeast Wichita, Southwest Wichita, Northeast Wichita, Northwest Wichita, McConnell Air Force Base, Oaklawn. Trained spotters reported at 10:14 PM, A large, and extremely dangerous tornado was on the ground, moving northeast at 20 Miles per hour. To Protect your life, move to shelter immediately. Do not hesitate to take cover. Once again, A very large, extremely dangerous, and life threatening tornado is on the ground. Those in Southeast, East, Southwest, West, Downtown Wichita, and Oaklawn, As well as those at McConnell Air Force Base and Wichita Mid Continent Airport should brace for the impact of a possible life threatening and dangerous tornado."
At 9:47 PM, the WFO in Wichita handed operations over to the WFO in Topeka, allowing those working at the NWS office at Mid Continent Airport to take cover.
The tornado passed through east Wichita, and impacted my grandmother's house and neighborhood pretty much head on. The house is fine, the back yard is just wrecked.
I will post damage pictures and videos later throughout this month, and into the summer. They are all together over 20 minutes long.
A state of disaster has been declared for Sedgwick county.
The massive EF-4 Stovepipe tornado impacted Oaklawn head on, and completely destroyed everything it hit.
The tornado missed my house by 8.2 Miles.
I was born and raised in.Wichita till i moved. Although the tornadoes scared me i loved the sirens
This is terrific! Thank you for all the time and effort put into it.
those newer sirens have such an eerie sound to them.
That's cool. I will never forget 4/14/12 tornado. Luckily no one got hurt in Wichita ks.
Best part is at the 1:00 mark, listen closely & turn up the volume!
Still watching this in 2015, but this one of the scariest, if not the scariest ambiance I've heard.
I lived and still do in wichita ks and it was so cool but scary
See, it doesn't sound like this in my hometown, which is about an hour NNE of Wichita. We have three 2001s, two Thunderbolts, and two 2T22s, and they sit at dissonant pitches (we once tried to match pitch during the Monday noon test in high school) and it just ends up sounding scary- this is almost like music and wouldn't send chills through my spine like ours do. It'd be almost comforting to have them sound like this.
COOL ambience!!!!
This is the content I like
Sounds like Peter's Gates or Hell's Mouth.
Both mesmerizing and horrifying.
its cool but erie. the only siren i heard at my house was a dumb ati. i will never forget that tornado. it was a freakin close call
i remember this storm i was moving things intp my basement the whole day while trying to comfort my friend cause she was worried about the tornado
Thunderbolts, a whelen, and a 2T22.
This system recording had no ATI's in it.
wasn't there a tornado in wichita?
Yes, it hit the east part of town.
I have damage pictures I need to upload still, They're hogging my camera's SD card.
ah. the ATI at tyndall are place A mile with in each other
This is where (with regret) that I can say that you are wrong... A Square wave at 565hz carries about 4-5 miles without any obstructions.
This was on my 15th birthday, and I don't remember this... HUMMm
Scary!
so beutiful
Wichita Gould have gotten t-128s and t-135s and t-121s instead of Ati's and crap but it's better than nothing
thats the truth rilley
ATI's are just plain flat-out annoying!
also useless......there sound only carries for maybe 1/2 to 1 mile
and useless
