    I have resisted all that pruning for years cause I hated cutting foliage to a robust growing tomato plant. Well this year I pruned and removed suckers on my indeterminates and I'm having the most success I've ever had since this Yankee moved to the south 35 years ago. A lot of great advice for growing tomatoes in the South. Thanks Danny and Wanda!

    My daddy born in 1917, was an excellent gardener and he always planted his tomato plants laid down about half of the plant length. That way, they had a stronger root system. Do you do that? He grew such tomatoes, it was unbelievable.

    • @doncook3584
      @doncook3584 Год назад +1

      I think you are saying your daddy placed half the stem in the ground and that’s a best practice because everything buried will sprout roots which grows awesome tomatoes. I see Danny didn’t reply and I can’t say he does or does not. He should. God bless

    • @tarabooartarmy3654
      @tarabooartarmy3654 Год назад +1

      @@doncook3584 I’m pretty sure she was referring to laying the plant horizontally in a trench in the ground and burying the bottom half and allowing the top half to stick out of the ground. Then the plant will naturally grow toward the light and correct itself to stand up.

      Cutting suckers did make a plant to focus on setting fruits rather than leaves. Next time try to add fertilizer with higher % of P(phosphorus) and K(Potassium) after first fruit setted. Too much N (nitrogen) actually makes the plant grow more leaves.

Every year I miss a couple of plants with the high suckers, by time I see em, I can't bring myself to cut them off because of their size. Hi from Canada.
    Great video.
    I agree with your tips, especially the risk of lower leaves picking up mold spores too close the ground. Air circulation is definetly necessary. I do the same thing.
    I apply my epsom salts a little differently though.
    In a planting hole approx. 1ftx1ft, I prepare the soil by mixing in 1/8 cup epsom salt crystals (+) 4 12 10 slow release fertilizer (organic ingredients) (+) a handful of pulverized egg shells. Mix thoroughly and set plant. Water-in and prune as you do.
    All the best for you this season! And thanx...😀
