Story 2: The doctor basically wrote "You're a cruel, heartless POS with zero consideration of the humanity of your employees. I will personally make sure your turnover rate goes high until you change your heart and drop your stupid rule" in the most formal way I could think of. Nah, with big companies, the amount of paperwork you have to go through for accommodations can be RIDICULOUS. I'm currently on round #2. And with prior situations, I've had to get hr (written up for a disability I disclosed), ada compliance, and osha involved before. So the current stunts don't scare me. (It's often not as simple as a note. It's forms and charts from company hr for your physician to fill out.)

An assistant manager once tried to write me up for being an hour late from lunch, and as a result we lost a $1000 sale. I told him:
    A) Due to treatment for a back injury, I have a MEDICAL ACCOMODATION to take 2 hour lunches, which he should have known;
    B) The sale didn't go through because the customer's card was declined, not because I wasn't there;
    C) I won't sign this, and I want a meeting with HR.
He seemed shocked. I don't think he knew that was an option.
After the meeting, I received letters of apology from both HR and the store manager. There was no write up. And the assistant manager was fired a month later, so I was ok with that.

There are three types of workers in most boss’s eyes: the replaceable, the over-engaged, and the integral.
Replaceable, you can find a replacement within 3 weeks. You don’t need them unless you’re so horrible they all quit at once.
Over-engaged do more than their contract requires. It’s harder to replace them unless you hire two or more workers who will do the job for more money as a whole. Try to keep these guys, and make them feel appreciated.
The integral have secret techniques and shortcuts that make your hardest work easy. The best ones when you drop in unannounced can seem lazy, or spending a bunch of time on silly side tasks. _Triple check their value before even considering firing them._ You have no guarantee they’ll train their methods and tricks to their replacements, and hence make you pay through the nose for either manual replacements or the now freelance worker’s contractor wages for the same job.

He didn’t realize that we were the go to guys when our fellow techs had problems. Upper management knew this but didn’t intervene. Another company was taking over the contract with different equipment and we were both hired by them because of our reputation. The interview was when can you start. The company we quit fired the manager within a week of us quitting. Because of our knowledge of the services we provided on the contract we took over the services about 8 months early so they lost close to $10 million in revenue. They tried to hire me back a few years later but I just laughed.

In our climate we actively encourage drinking water and tons of businesses make it a habit to offer water as a courtesy. I worked at Costco in October the year I graduated High School as one of those Sampler people and my boss was a narcissistic witch. I found out that she would hound the newer hires if we were 2 minutes late, yell at us if we didn’t have enough samples out or push the product out (which we did), and talk down to us like we were stupid kids for no reason. She never did it to the older employees, just me (I was 18) and the other younger hires.
One day after my shift she told me to come in 15 minutes early the next day to have a talk with me about my work performance. I arrived two minutes late because it was winter at the time and it had snowed the night before, as soon as she saw me she started yelling at me. She berated me for being ‘late’ and started telling me that I’m 18 years old and should start acting like an adult because I’m not a kid anymore and that she wasn’t my mom (I swear she said that) Finally I got angry and told her ‘You’re right, you’re NOT my mom because MY MOM isn’t a condescending bitch like you!’ She then told me ‘If you don’t like working here then quit’ So I did. I threw my apron and hat on her desk, told her that I quit, grabbed my stuff and left.
1 week later I came in to get my last paycheck and found out that she was fired because of her horrible attitude towards the younger hires. According to my former colleagues apparently me quitting was the final strike against her. I never saw her again.
They did offer me my position back if I needed work but I turned it down because I had signed up for Job Corps.

Yeah most companies at least actively discourage or outright mock employees for drinking water. I was pregnant and having done research knew it was dangerous to my baby if I didn't drink about a gallon a day. Literally every manager made snide remarks about it, especially every time I had to go to the bathroom. But joke's on them. I had a healthy baby boy and quit halfway through my leave.
Story 4: Worked at a factory for a company that makes hoses. Made friends with fellow coworkers but was not treated as a human being by the management. I was a temp so they didn't care about me.
    1. Had a rule you couldn't go on lunch unless you were told to. Kept forgetting about me.
    2. Under no circumstances is the line to be shut down even if one of the machines is malfunctioning, so it's your job to coil thousands of yards of hose on the floor until the problem gets fixed. Those things are heavy and I'm not a superhuman so I can't do that for hours on end without breaks.
    3. They were EXTREMELY strict about clock in and clock out times being on the exact minute or you would be reprimanded.
One day I was working the entire line by myself. My main job was to package the product and stack it correctly based on size, then push it to the back to be inspected. My speed had greatly improved in the 2 months I had been working there but I knew well enough not to compromise quality for speed. Naturally I can't work as fast as two or three people so I'm given help for like 5 minutes and they do a really crappy job at packaging and stacking so while I was glad of the help I was also frustrated knowing I would have to fix their work. But then there was a problem on the line and I had to stop packaging and start coiling. But no one is coming to help me or fix the problem on the line. Managers are literally just standing around talking as if it isn't happening while I'm breaking my arms and trying not to trip on colied line.
Later, I'm literally screaming for help and the managers in charge were still ignoring me. When I was finally allowed to go on lunch two hours late I was contemplating quitting, but some food and rest cooled my head. Going back in was my biggest mistake though because a manager screamed at me about what an awful job "my" packing and stacking was. I would personally have to bust open and re pack and re stack every single pallet that had been done on my line. All while meeting my quota for what was still coming down the line. I was STILL BY MYSELF. That's when I started crying and they started mocking me. Then the same machine error happened again and I was coiling the rest of the shift. Still nobody had come to help, and even the bosses who were previously standing around unconcerned were gone. So I watched the clock and when it was exactly time for me to leave I ducked under the line an got out of there.
I received a phone call the next day from the temp agency and they said they didn't care to hear what had happened but since I left without being dismissed I had effectively quit. I tried to explain what happened but they didn't want to hear it. I told them I left when my shift ended and tried to get someone's attention but was told it didn't matter.
TL;DR Two months working at a factory I was fired for busting my ass trying to run an entire line of product by myself and not making quota shen the machines were broken with nobody to come fix them.
In case you are curious that company was Rain Bird. I don't care who knows that they treat their employees like shit.

Years ago I worked at a craft store, one that tends to employee a lot of older women. One day I got my lip pierced, I had a thin silver hoop going through the center of my lower lip. I got to work and my store manager noticed but didn't say anything. She knew I was a hard worker and it wouldn't affect my performance whatsoever. Months go by without a single customer complaint but then one day the regional manager comes for his annual visit. The moment he saw me he said "No. That has to go." My manager pointed out to him that there was nothing in the dress code about piercings. He fumed but left me alone. Then a few weeks later we received an updated employee handbook, even though it was rarely updated. Under the dress code it said no piercings or tattoos. All the other employees were livid because every one of them had their ears pierced. Now they only had single holes in each ear and tended to wear studs or small hoops but still, telling an employee at a freaking craft store that they couldn't wear any earrings was ridiculous. Everyone at my location, and I'm assuming many others, complained so much to corporate that they edited it to specify facial piercings, My store manager still didn't make me remove mine because she thought the rule was stupid. But yeah, if anyone worked at Joann Fabrics after 2004 and that rule was still in the handbook it's my fault.

My father was an air traffic controller for many years. As you can imagine, a lot of policies changed around 2002. A lot made sense given the temperature of the world, but in ‘06 a rule was added that they had to follow a dress code of khaki pants and a button up shirt. They asked why and were told to look more professional. That is ridiculous because it’s a federal crime to get where you can see an air traffic controller while he’s working without going through three security checkpoints minimum.
Anyway, one day a controller wore a pair of Dickey’s khakis. He was told these did not go with the spirit of the dress code and that he was not allowed to wear them. The message went out that Dickey’s weren’t allowed. But the FAA didn’t count on two things. One, Dickey’s makes political contributions. Two, a controller in the system knew Dickey’s CEO. After a few phone calls were made, a new memo went out that said, not only are Dickey’s allowed, but their clothing was part of the consideration for the new dress code. The controllers’ response was if they’re going to be this stupid about it, we’ll give them Dickey’s til they come out of their ears. Each controller went out and bought at least five outfits of Dickey’s pants and shirts and most wore exclusively those until the dress code was relaxed five years later.

There were both long- and short-sleeved shirts, but just long pants. Over the years, they had accumulated quite a few extra uniforms. I found a pair of pants that had started to wear out. I made them into shorts, using the material to cover the worn spots. It was a good tailoring job. I wore them on hot days, and no one said a word. When they first implemented this rule and started to enforce it, we all simply turned to our managers and said "you do realize that Arizona State law specifically states that you cannot deny someone water at any point for any reason". Well, next thing we know that rule had been changed to state that water in a container that could be sealed/closed would be allowed. Someone hadn't done their homework before completely banning something and making a new rule, sad when the employee's have more knowledge than the big bosses do!

During my Uni classes, we studied different management styles, and the course material was a book highlighting good vs. bad management. The book is basically a how-to on malicious compliance.
Example: management wants us to wear full business suits, tie and all, instead of the casual we've been wearing so far? OK then. Everyone goes to their local second-hand/thrift store to buy the most hideous, 70s/80s style ties and mismatched jackets. We all looked like clowns with wide ties and big colar jackets. That rule lasted about 24h.
A great quote from said book:

The "No water on the sales floor or for cashiers" is fairly common in my experience.
I worked at one crafts store where a co-worker was VERY obviously pregnant, but she still had to have a doctor's note.
Another crafts store job straight up said it was "Unprofessional" for cashiers to have water at their station, and restricted what they would accept a doctor's note for (basically, no notes about water "Just because", it had to have a valid medical reason).
An uncle who works at Wal-Mart said they can't have water either. (Save for the people getting carts.)
When I worked at a local sandwich shop and at a regional pharmacy chain, they both not only allowed water, but encouraged it. We had to have our drinks on a back counter at the sandwich shop and we were trusted to be responsible about when we stepped away to get a drink (such as during a lull in customers).

what i find funny about story 2, is the fact the higher ups thought it was perfectly reasonable to basically make working in the pharmacy as misurible as possible. it reminds me of when i worked at waffle house (for context, im basically 6 foot 6 inches tall, and i beat my lower back as a kid during my autistic outbursts, so if i bend over for long periods of time i have to sit down as it starts being very painful), i asked if i could have a chair to sit down in as im in pain, and they were like "nope! get a doctors note!". after finding out that the only thing they do during robberies or other criminal actions is "cameras and law enforcement" and "its a firable offense to defend the store", and the fact some of the coworkers were toxic while i worked there one day, after bout 4 days i basically quiet quit, as i would have to get on either a massage chair, or painkillers before i even drove, i would be constantly worried about my own safety, and i would be constantly on alert for any toxic coworkers that wants to pick a fight with me for no reason.
so yea, not about that shit.

These stories remind me of the time I walked off a constitution job that my uncle was doing Many Years Ago. My uncle was doing a remodeling job for a old fire station in a historical part of a town. I thought it was going to be my uncle and I doing some stuff with a few guys he know. My uncle just drops me off and tells me that one of the guys there will tell me what to do and he leaves after that. There was like several people I don't know already working. So I did ask them what I need to do. There was someone busting up some old brick pillars they told me to put the bricks in the wheelbarrow and dump them in the construction dump container around the side. Easier said then done. They didn't have no work gloves and where the pillars are at was inside under the floor with lots of dust flying everywhere and I didn't have no kind of mask to wear too. I started doing it and one of the dudes started complaining I wasn't feeling up the wheelbarrow enough but the area I had to go was on a slope and if I filled it up too much it would tip. So I did what he said and filled it up more but then the dude started complaining I wasn't moving fast enough but the wheelbarrow was heavy and like I stated I had to move it across an angled slope. Then the dude busting up the pillars wouldn't completely bust apart the bricks. So there would be multiple brick stuck together still (like 4-5+ bricks). I asked the guy to at least bust up the big ones in half but he didn't. So after about 4 hours of doing that I was at my limit. Finally one of the guys said "alrighty let's take a break". So I thought "yeah I can gain some strength back to go in the rest of the day. Pretty much 5 minutes later after he finishes his smoke the dude said "alright every back to work".
So I started back up but I couldn't toss the brick up and over the dump container tall wall anymore. So ask in trying to toss one of those big chunks of bricks that had 4-5 bricks stuck together into the container I couldn't get it to go over. So one of the main guys hung hi head out the window laughing and said "come on dude my d!ck is heavier than that so you should easily be able to toss that over. So I just put it around the side of the container where no one can see and tossed the rest of the bricks in. So I was already at ny limit and they the guy told me to move even faster. So while I was getting another load the whole wheelbarrow tipped over on the skipping hill. I picked them up and dumped them in. So after that I just said "F it!". I went up to the main guy who's just sitting on his butt in the truck and told him "hey the dust in there is bad. So I'm going to step outside for 5 minutes and get some fresh air" lazy dude told me I can do that. So when I stepped outside I casually walked alone the walk around the corner of the building and took off running down the street as fast as I could with what energy I had left. When I couldn't run no more looked around and figure out where I was at. I knew there was a library near by and I walked to it. So I went inside and used the payphone to call my dad and tell him to pick me up. Yes this was back in the day when payphones was still a thing. Man those were the days.

We had an operations manager that decided all manner of stupid rules which meant he came up agsint myself and the other union reps on a regular interval as he was literally outting in rules that were illegal, not thet they ever lasted more than an hour, we made his life MISERABLE.
He then came up with one that wasnt illegal but should have been. "You cant go to the toilet if someone else from your department is already going, instead your line supervisor has to make a list of what order you are going in".
Now where this affected me? I had recently just returned to work from major surgery which destoryed my bladder control I had a note fromnt he hospital sayign that I could be fitted with a personal urine catheter due to infection risk and contanimation risk with food prep. So if I needed to go to the toilet, I couldnt wait, I literally had to go as once my body decided it was time I had 2 mins top to get to the bathroom (whoch was at the other end of the building to me). Ofc we had ccvt everywhere so there was footage of me fast walking to the toilets maybe 15 times a day. He actually tried to write me up for it. So I just grinned and said "Try it, Im in the Union and have amedical reason why this is happening".
thank god he got fired for incompetanece later and replaced with a much better manager

I am a doctor. I applaud this doctor’s note(s). I have experienced this problem a lot. There was a daycare that required parents to get a doctor’s note if the child was absent from daycare due to illness. Then that also required a note from the doctor when the child was well enough to return to daycare. This was bad for the parents and me, because I couldn’t write a note unless I had evaluated the child. Therefore I was seeing children with minor illnesses that did not require a doctor’s attention, caused unnecessary expense and inconvenience to the family and added to my already overwhelming work load. I finally called the daycare and explained this to them. I said that it might have seemed to be a good idea to protect the other children, but they never realized what the consequences were for their rules. Had they ever asked a doctor for their opinion on this? No. Luckily for me and my clients, they discontinued this requirement.

So my boss got all upset when I had to call in sick one time. I didn’t know what what going on but I was in serious pain and had gone to the ER in case it was appendicitis. My sister had to go to work for me because my boss has no extra employees. Turns out it was a small kidney stone. It took a solid week for the stone to dissolve where the pain was so much that I had to take constant hot baths and heavy painkillers just to sleep for a bit. My boss was better with the rest of the week but that was also my first time asking for a sick day for that job.

At my current job, we've never needed a Dr's note, but we did have to submit Covid results to return to work after covid. Quick at home test. Photo of negative results on group chat, back to work. I love my job!

I've never worked for a temp agency. Every time I've gone to sign up for one, I've found some kind of procedural nightmare waiting in the paperwork. Like "you have to come to our office on business hours on Tuesday to get paid", which is impossible since _I'd be actually working at that time._ So I've always backed out. Don't sign on to temp agencies. They're great for companies that want to hire expendable workers that they can get rid of risk-free, but terrible for employees.

Story 2 sounds like the job I just left. We had that rule, but anyone that wasn't management ignored it.

Story 2: this is why the nurses for my church’s girls camping trip always say “Hydrate, don’t Diedrate.” It’s an extremely memorable phrase, so NONE of us girls forget it. It’s also rather funny. 😆
