Hillsdale County MI here, we plant our last round of carrots in mid August. Once the green tops appear, we cover them with straw and let them grow into winter. In February or early March, we dig through snow, remove the straw, dig through cool pliable soil and wallah!! We dig super sweet carrots! Fun for kids and adults too!
What variety of carrot do you grow? I garden throughout the winter too and I haven't found a carrot that works for me

@kat amen. The older I got the longer it takes me to do anything. I still try everyday to stay active no matter how much I hurt.
I’ve learned that as long as you don’t have a problem with kidney stones or take blood thinners

I have been gardening my whole life. I'm just getting to the beans and just got the tomatoes in the ground Saturday. The older I get the longer it takes me to get everything planted. My first tomatillo ever is growing! My first year growing celery. Doing good.
So glad to not be the only gracefully aging, slow-moving gardener!
FYI, you'll need a minimum of two tomatillo plants planted in close proximity to ensure pollination. Speaking from experience. Also, they get pretty darn big. Good luck

I’m with you! I gave a gardening talk at a local event, this weekend, and still don’t have any of my warm weather stuff in the ground🙄 I think learning to grow/ enjoying more Spring stuff also contributes to my lack of urgency in getting the warm weather stuff out:)

We have had much cooler than normal weather in May/June so far. When this monsoon we are having in the PNW passes through, the weekend will be all about planting my warm weather crops outside 👊🏻🌻👊🏻

On the other side of the country we never had a winter. Turkeys laid eggs a month early. Berries came in a month early. Sunflowers were 5 feet high before our typical late frost date. Strange times!

Doing three sisters this year. The first ring of corn is in and up to 2’, the second is planted. Third and fourth are waiting. The beans were planted today to go with the corn. I put in four spaghetti squash seeds. I planted my cornmeal corn at my daughter’s place. This way it won’t react with the heirloom sweet corn. First year garden in a new state and zone. Peas have done really good the past month. I’m getting fava beans right now. First time and I love them.

Speaking of mammoth sunflowers, growing 3 MI Gardener mammoth sunflower seeds this season as well. Additionally growing MI Gardener Autumn Beauty & Velvet Queen sunflowers too. So far, they are all doing well.
We have only had one day without rain, which was May 27. But, our power just came back on. Stormy springs prevent gardening.

Ok I live in northeast and we had a frost on May 30th and the 1st week in June ,the night temp have been below 50. So I just started planting warm crops

I planted about 400 of your peaches and cream sweet corn in late April. Great germination with these non sprayed seeds.... Fertilized....Hilled....and weeded.....Waist high already! Thank you from Indiana.

9b here. Our triple digit days are coming quick. I put up my sun shade this past week. We dont dare plant most of those until late sept. But our growing season is so long we can even plant tomatoes from seed now. We dont get any freezes til late jan.
I planted more green beans less than 2 weeks ago and they are doing great. They love this heat and are beginning to climb. I killed all my squash this year by moving them when i reconfigured my garden but i will be planting more of those next month anyway. I planted some store bought bu ching onions last yeat and we are still harvesting off them.
Thanks for this video. I just ordered some of the seeds you mentioned. I’m in northeast Ohio and we had an unseasonably warm May so I took a chance and planted out my garden early (which I never do before memorial weekend) and it’s doing very well. I used to have my garden in the back of my property but it was a chore to drag 200 feet of hose to water and I didn’t know about soil amending and every year my garden would fail. Now I have raised beds closer to my water source and I’ve learned a lot from your channel which has made gardening so much more enjoyable. Thank you again for sharing all your knowledge. 😊
I struggle to grow spinach here but malabar spinach does amazing for me Spring, Summer and Fall. Then I grow it indoors in Winter. Red malabar is much more vining and needs something to climb but green malabar can often free stand. Both are delicious but to keep leaves tasting good through the whole life of the plant, pinch off flowers as they form. Also if you pinch the vine back (red malabar) the base plant will grow a new vine. Using that method and moving the plants indoors in Winter, I can keep my plants producing spinach for years.

West GA here and we’re getting ready for our second round of squash, cucumber and beans. I’m also going to buy some started tomatoes to fill in some spaces where other things have come out.
We had frost late last week, so I’m only planting now. 😅 I’m also still in the process of replacing my old raised beds with new ones, and my kids were sick last week, so I’m running behind. But I’ve got some tomatoes in the ground now, and I’m hoping to get some beans, sunflower, and squash seeds planted in the next few days.

Another hot weather option like Malabar spinach but non-vining is New Zealand spinach (it is not a spinach, but it tastes the same, they tell me). I have one growing for the first time this summer.

When do you sow Purple Sprouting Broccoli and when should you transplant it out into the garden?
I live in Utah where we get cold winters and hot and dry summers. Every year I grow a lettuce called parris Island. It’s like a romaine type lettuce, but it actually tolerates heat better than any other I’ve tried.
In NE OH. Just planted out some tomato and pepper seedlings last weekend. Still a few more to do. Planting beans soon! Haven't decided on corn yet. Still ha e some squash to plant too

I have some Chinese Cucumbers in the ground I bought from a local nursery about a week or two ago and they're already blooming and starting to produce little tiny fruit. I tied them onto my arch trellis his morning and am looking forward to when they grow all the way over it. I also have some Biet Alpha and Armenian cucumber and Sugar Anne peas hardening off on the porch, as well as several types of melons. I still need some green bean seeds. I was wondering if the yard long ones taste the same as the regular varieties?

@@gferraro8353 I wait for my hard neck to get the first curl. Then I snap them off close to the base. Then three weeks later it should be done. Sometimes four. For softneck when the bottom three or four leaves are dry. You can did gently around the bulb to see if it has defined cloves. If you wait too long the cloves will split. They will still be edible, just not long storage. I peel and freeze any small or split cloves in a doubled ziplock bag. They defrost quick.

Did broccoli and cauliflower, both went straight to seed. 😢 I planted in late march.
I have to say that my seeds are fine, but the plants are not growing here in the Berkshires. No idea why this year is different, but went to the nursery for plants yesterday. Have changed crops over already and it has only been 6 weeks. Peace

I grow New Zealand spinach in the summer. It's not a true spinach either. Has a hint of lemon in the flavor. Goes nuts in the heat. I had one plant that grew to cover a 3 ft by 4 ft area as I was curious how big they could get.
My cucumbers are being grown in a big felt grow bag but they are bitter. How can I fix this?

I am just now able to ant out my tomato plants due to hopefully the last 2 hard frosts last week. Those peppers and squash plants need put in the ground! No succession planting other than maybe beans or squash or cuc plants that the bugs get after I put them out. Our spring frosts are running later than normal the last 4 years or so as well as early frosts in fall. My area of n. Idaho has Not moved into a new growing zone or time like they are trying to tell us!!

A word on Malabar Spinach since it's been ramping up in popularity as a spinach replacement for summer; it doesn't get bitter BUT the texture is a bit MUCILAGINOUS or MUCOUSY. Fair warning.

Red Malabar spinach doesn’t taste like spinach. It has succulent qualities. It has thicker leaves and they’re shiny. My husband and I hated it. Also the dang thing self seeds itself and it’s all over my garden this year. Do not recommend.
Have you tried green Malabar spinach?
If you grow your Malibar in the shade, the leaves will get the size of a dinner plate. Just saying.

I just looked up nasturtiums because I've never heard of them. They sound like they would be great on a sandwich or salad. The zone hardness is 10-11. I'm in Chicago at 5a. I know you are around Detroit at about 6g and are having great success growing nasturtiums so is the zone 10-11. I would really like to start growing it so how does this work?

They are annuals, germinate and grow quite quickly. I grow them easily in zone 3a. They usually last til October up here. They also set seed quickly, too. 😊
I moved from 8A zone but had nasturtium grow from summer til the freeze in Texas. Someone watered & left my wrapped containers of nasturtium. That was the only thing that took them out.
The leaves are adorable, but they are phenomenal when they flower. Good luck.
I grow them non stop in inside beginning in May, put on 1st of june..but just started more 3 days ago and they going crazy already...I love them to deter bugs..and the pepper taste to them in salads.yummmm..ur weather should be close to ours!good luck!!! Try it...they super easy and hard to kill.lol

Although I usually have success growing most things, beans have been an strangely difficult thing for me to grow. I've tried 3 years in a row. Something is eating leaves off young plants. I began covering each of them at night with food containers and still finding the leaves eaten off, have no idea what is the culprit.
Malabar spinach is slimy when you chew it raw, and is best used to thicken soups and stews much like okra (think boiled okra). It's flavor is earthy, and I especially like it when put into tom kha ghai soup... here in N. Georgia it reseeds and comes back every year. So. Plant it once where you dont mind it coming back, and be prepared to find it all over your property because the birds like the berries it produces...
I started my corn and zucchini in early April, and my pole beans have already taken over my trellises. Unfortunately, the leaves on my zucchini are light green, almost yellow, and I believe it's just due to too much rain and overcast they got throughout the previous month (Texas sure got wet); however, they are making new flower buds which seems good. I hope for more upcoming days to stay sunny for their sake.

But but the pill bugs and earwigs are eating everything. I feel like I am just planting plants to feed the little monsters. 😭😫 Also the leaf borers. haven't gotten a harvest of Swiss chard or beets since I started growing here. Yes I put so much DE down. I order 4lb bag on the monthly.

I was feeling overwhelmed because I still have so much I've not done that's on my list and I was thinking it's too late, but this video helped my to realize that some of the stuff I need to plant will be right on time, actually. So what if you take carrot seeds and put them in a ziplock and damp paper towel and put them in the fridge for a week before planting?
Do you have a specific kind of cabbage or can you do any kind o always miss the Mark on cabbage the one yr I did them earwig ate them up
This weeks going to be so hot. I juust walked out to some spouts that are wilted and done. Glad they were free😂 i hate transplanting for that reason.

Just put in some melons and when I was at a garden supply store they had some poor onion plants on sale to get rid of. I had just cleaned out the area where I had my early radishes so figured the plants might make something by fall.
i've got successive bush beans planted in several places... when one section is done putting out, the others (including some vine beans) are in line ready to give those yummies too... and while theyre putting out, there will be new ones direct sowed in the first spot...
i've got a variety of lettuces i planted 3 weeks ago, in a taller raised bed and they should be fine thru the hot months bcs i have some 30 year old plastic lattice that i have hooped over the bed (repurposed from our inlaws old pool deck). i put an old sheer curtain over it to further keep it shaded and protected from the summer sun and they love it. did this last year in a different raised bed and they did quite well.
The seeds I need are short day onions, purple and chedder cauliflower.
All of these can be sown from seed now?
