That is exactly right. The UAV allows operators to see parts of the pipeline that would otherwise not be visible, helping ensure safety across the pipeline.

Thanks for recognizing our efforts. We think its pretty great too.

Thanks for the question, James. BP does not have a program/department dedicated to aerial surveillance techniques or unmanned aircraft. BP has a Chief Technology Office that assists groups in BP explore and test different technologies that could enable doing a job in a safer or more efficient manner. We are working with the UAF research facility exploring practical uses of the UAV in our remote Alaska arctic operations.

Great question, Joe. The Aeryon Scout will operate/perform in up to 40mph winds. IBP has tested it on the North Slope at approximately -15 below. The average battery life is 20 minutes. In the extreme cold the battery lasted about 12-14 minutes. It is a quick change for battery swap out.

I love it. Very simple design and strong. Hope it goes into service for other companies aswell. Very useful.

Justlooking58 is correct. The UAV can fly safely and closely to the pipline whereas a manually operated helicopter cannot.

I work in the field of pipeline monitoring in Western Siberia, we work for an airplane-type UAV

cool someones gotta good job,in the process of building a opticoptor and would highly recomend the APM 2.5 Arducopter Flight Controller + GPS,theres a free program mapper for setting way points with hight, longitude, lattitude, click of 1 switch on the dx8 and sit back and wait for it to come home

a quad has a more stable platform for camera work than a helicopter and can hover in one place allot better than any flying object.bp and other companys are sure to use these in the future for inspection and site arial pictures. and they have less moving parts to break as opposed to a helicopter

I work in my contry in a gas inspection company and we intend to do some like that in our pipelines.
What is the brand, and where can we get a similar UAV? Is that UAV "ex" explosion prove?

Thank you for loading this video. I am earning a doctorate in aerospace science from Ok. State U. and need more general information like this. Does BP have a dept. or program dedicated to this technology?

I'm wondering what's the range for this? At least I know that if I catch something moving out of the corner of my eye, it's just the UAV.

Would BP be interested in a better designed VTOL UAS that flies 100mph for an hour, is IP65 weather sealed, flies beyond line of sight and is totally autonomous from launch to return and recharge? Meet AEVA

In this case, the system being used is a highly reliable, military-grade piece of equipment, albeit there are certainly other small UAVs on the market that ARE little more than glorified RC's... just not this one. The costs of maintaining this UAV, even if it were entirely replaced annually, are negligible compared to those of maintaining and operating a helicopter for this role.

to build m thermodynamic resonant engine maybe next time we can change the path for something like that. I mean ISON no BP. Also BP I split in 2 this app. I was thincling for safety and in second one is a surce for a clean energy at USPTO I hope soo.

What are the risk with flying an electric motor near a gas pipeline?

      Eddy red
I appreciate your input Eddy but I am still interested how this technology would work on the over 4000 miles of gas pipeline BP owns in North America. I am sure BP has addressed this issue and what those investigations have discovered would be of interest to many. If the Alaska project fairs well I imagine BP would consider similar technology to manage all their assets.

The UAV can fly much closer to the pipeline and is safer.
