Fan Zhendong has always been a slow starter. This is when Fan was 18???? In the 5th game, he played just like he is today. In this match, we anticipated a TT champion in development. I am really surprised he has not won an Olympics gold and the WTTC Single by now, the year 2021. I believe the delay of the Olympics for a year cost Fan the gold. Back in 2020, he would have slain the Dragon.
This tendency (hitting the forehand further in front than optimum position) is common among many players (especially youngsters and amateurs) who have a far better backhand than forehand. A fairly simple issue to resolve for FZD, given China's expertise in training program and structure.
FZD's forehand is a clear weakness of his. A root cause of his weakness is his tendency to contact the ball too far from his body, in front of his body. The optimal contact position (relative to body) should be somewhere diagonal from the shoulder. FZD clearly missed this spot, evident from the many times he awkwardly overreach his racket in front for the topspin drives. Another compounding factor is his footwork positioning when moving for the forehand shots.
