    If you're new here, welcome! I've got something for you. It's my book - The 5-Step Plan for English Fluency - and it's free to download: www.tofluency.com/5-step-plan/

      This is an interesting topic. When I statred out in Spanish I found the '3000 words' idea really motivated me to learn 10-20 words per day. That said, I find "confidence" can often largely depend on context too. When my Spanish was at around B2 a few years ago, I thought I was doing pretty well. Then one day, I was at my girlfriend's flat surrounded by her Spanish student friends who were having a heated debate about the country's current political situation. It took all of my efforts just to follow along. I wasn't able to take part in the discussion as I couldn't keep up with the pace. Two hours later I was absolutely exhausted, but you can bet my listening improved. So my advice is this: don't wait until you become 'confident'. We gain confidence by doing.

    this channel is just amazing. The speaker is incredible. The guy speaks clearly and understandably. My problem in English is that I understand very poorly by ear and catch only the main idea of what was said and about 10%..20% of the details. But in this case, I understand about 70% of what was said thanks to the speaker's effort to speak clearly.

    I don’t know exactly how many words I know, but I think over 8000 words. The difficulty is that some English words have many meanings in my own language German. I learn new words from books and articles. I learn daily for three hours a day and watch Netflix in English with subtitles, but I can’t understand all. I make progress every day and learn more words.

    You can do tests online that ask you about 70 words and then estimate the size of your vocabulary. I'm a native English speaker and I did two tests. I got 23,600 words and 36,000 words. The latter result represents about 60% of the total words in English. I got 25,000 in Spanish (I'm sure that this is an overestimate) and 4400 in French.

Someone can know by heart more than 3.000 words but his shiness stop him to talk or he simply cant use the proper grammar. Learning a different language is an endless task!

    Just in case remember that to know one word means not only this word but also a word family ( a group of words that share the same root word), for example: Write-Writer-Wrote-Written-Writs-Writing, etc.
    All this represents only one word, not several words. Consider this.

    • @putinisakiller8093

      A verb, a participle, a noun and an adjective are different words that have a common root.

    • @olpicado
      @olpicado Год назад

      @@putinisakiller8093 In my case I count all those as only one word, but if you do it other way it is okay. My point is just don't forget to consider that when measuring and comparing by using the correct pattern previously set up for that. Otherwise, we would be either overestimating in your case or underestimating in my case.

    • @putinisakiller8093
      @putinisakiller8093 Год назад +1

      @@olpicado
      I'm not sure that there is the only correct way of measuring. Different languages different problems. My native language has 24-28 forms for every adjective. And each of them may have 2 or more meanings. 😊 HOW to count them?... I understand your approach, but words can have several meanings. Is it one word or more?...
      How many words is a word (a) nail?

    • @olpicado
      @olpicado Год назад

      @@putinisakiller8093 yes, I understand your point, even I'm not saying there is only one way, but we need to consider first what is the rule used and then we can compare or estimate accurately. I thought I heard in the video or in some articles from other polyglots that measure (1 word per family) as the most used at least for English but I could be wrong. The important thing is to take it into consideration in order not to be comparing apples with oranges, let's say for example that person A counts all the words separately (write, writing, written, etc), on the other hand person B counts all that group of words as one, that way at the end of the day we could be wrong when measuring the progress of each person or even the level of vocabulary they manage because of this misunderstanding, as well as we could develop research with inaccurate data.

    About 'meldrop and want'... I think most of us know which words are the 1000 most used words. Because we also know which words we use a lot in our own language. Things like to reach, to forget, couch, tv, work, loan, run, decide, etc. But I think it can be difficult to know if a word belongs to the 8000 most used words.

    Hello, I would like to know if with 15,000 to 20,000 word families I will be able to read entire books like novels without having to look up the meaning of a bunch of words. I took the tests and my score was 12,000 but I still find it difficult to read more advanced books. I have set myself a goal to reach a vocabulary of 18,000 words so that I can read novels fluently to enjoy reading as a hobby. That is, there are 6,000 words left to learn. If I learn 10 words a day which is an ease pace then it will take me approximately 1 year and 7 months to reach that goal. Is 18,000 words a good number? Reinforcing here that I am only concerned with passive read-only vocabulary.

      It depends on what you read. If it's sci-fi, fantasy or technology, 20,000 may be not enough. To read native adult books, you have to know as much as an average adult native.

    Wow I got like 11,100 in the vocab test but I still lack the confidence and still experience stuttering. I'm only confident when I'm writing in English (like this one)
