We used to call it power shifting. Fun.
Flat-shifting!
Read that the late-great drag-racing legend Bill 'Grumpy' Jenkins would grind half of every other tooth on the gears to make for more positive 'flat-shifting'.
Agreed.
Still do. Still are.
Exactly ! Power shifting ❤
Stock m-22 rock crusher trans of aftermarket with dog face gears ?
The adrenaline rush before the launch! Hell yeah!! 👍
That's meth tweek...
@@motorman1873 tell us you've never drag raced without telling us you've never drag raced. Weak.
@msh6865 Kind of like the shakes you get after you almost die but don't....😂 👍😂
Am I in first? Lemme double check. Not sure, let's check again.
Now THAT'S how you shift a hot rod!! I've tried to explain this to countless "racers" on this channel that they are granny shifting and losing ET. It's like I'm speaking a different language. Great job, my friend! Excellent!
Now take care of that wheel hop .
Bench seat 4spd power shift… hell yeah!!!
Its harder to do with modern cable shifted transmissions, hence it being a lost art
@@Cutlass_Rudd It's actually not. A modern manual shifter will actually make it easier. It's virtually impossible to miss first to second. The talent part is that left leg tapping that clutch pedal just right while having the stones to not back off the accelerator, keeping it to the floor, between shifts. Second to third is the most difficult because you could mistakenly go back to first. Third to fourth is a piece of cake. Unless you have some wild rear gears, you shouldn't need to go into fifth.
@@Cutlass_Rudd
Nothing like the agony of defeat doing it with the stock shifter and jamming the rods 2nd to 3rd. Time for a Hurst! Yup
Great technique, notice how he rolled out of the hole - with minimal wheel spin, then got on it quickly. Also, that's a standard bench seat car - which is why the shifter is shaped that way. Lastly, anyone catch the shift light - lower / right dash?😊
Yes, I did see that. Sounded like 6500. You don't just side step it or snatch your foot up with narrow tires, you have to listen and feel what you think it can take until it hooks.
Right on!
Well done!
Ah,the good old days, when cars were cars, and men were men
💯 facts 👍
...women were too and sheep ran scared.
And transmissions were a dime a dozen.
@john Says the guy with the cat photo? You pha-gette
And sheep were nervous.
Wow, honestly that shifting was superb. I am in awe. Well done!
Back when you had to “Drive” your car. No rev limiter! No traction control! No bullshit. You beat it like it owed you money. If you screwed up? BOOM!!!!! Send a piston to Jesus. Look up Herb McCandless!! He was known as Mr. 4 Speed. There’s a reason for it too🔥🇺🇸🤘😎
This guy is good...I shifted my 66 L79 nova just like this ...grate time to be a teenager...
Same! I had a L79 66 Nova in the 90s and used to drive it like this. I regret selling that car every day…still have a 66 and a 67 but they arent the same…
Two buds had them, my choice of a car from "back in the day". I personally owned two Chevy IIs, '63 6 cyl /3sp and a '64 SS that the prior owner had dropped a 327/300hp engine (4sp). Yep, those were the days. On my life's highlight reel
That’s also a V-gate (vertical gate) shifter so it’s a lot easier to power shift
Heck of a driver. Knows his car.
No fancy clusters on the dash or technology assist. The way it used to be and should be.
Going by RPMs, sound and feel.
She's a beast!
That's a well put together Muncie and a driver that knows how to handle a big block. 👍😁
That's the way it's done. That's how I shifted my 1967 Malibu.
Used to power shift all the time with my Darts and Duster. But never with a round ball on the shifter. I used a Hurst 'T' handle. Better grip. Missing a shift was definitely a no-no. Thankfully I never missed. On Chrysler 4 speeds, removing every other tooth off the synchros and you can not bother with the clutch too. Great vid.
“Bill Grumpy Shifting”.
Is the absolute best gear shifting video.
HANDsDOWN.
NOT EVEN CLOSE ..... 👍
Grump had 277 runs without missing a shift!
Grumpy did it while smoking a cigar too!
Nicely done. I do that regularly when I'm driving, if it's a straight line road. Not always full throttle to the floor but steady throttle, this keeps my reactions sharp. Great Fun.
I learned that at 18, in my first strong car. 68 Camaro 396 M20 Muncie, HurstCompetitionPlus, 12:1, L88 solid cam, 40lb flywheel, 12 bolt with Summers Brothers spool and axles and 5.13 Eaton pro gears.
Were you doing wheelies with that setup???? 5.13 Holy crap! That couldn't have been a street car with 12:1 and 5.13's, was it?
@@briansauer6695 Did he get a car from his Dad - John Force....Lol....?
Man I was distracted by the car and then realized this is my local track lol, love to see it
We called it speed shifting. Never let off the gas and shift through the gears! Had a 67 Camaro with 327 and 4 spd Muncie used to race with. Good times!
M22 sound is music to my ears!
I used to “Power Shift” my ‘55 Chevy with a dual-quad 409 all the time when the space (and the absence of law enforcement) allowed.
Either choice of wording, nicely done!
Nicely done !
Nicely done!!!
That’s power shifting done right.
Awesome love the radio delete plate
A thing of beauty. Almost a lost art. Everyone thought my 66 Step side was an automatic. They had to look for proof. 400 small block, aluminum Muncie 4 speed, 411 rear.
That’s what we did back in the 70s
Stomp on it and you don’t let it up till it’s over ❤
Whatever you do, don't miss that shift! Three pedal glory!
What was your time? I used to own the 70 Chevelle LS6 454. My best time in the 1/4 mile was 11.67
I have never been able to do this in any of the manual cars ive owned, but not for lack of trying. I now have a 2014 cts vsport with paddle shifters so no need for a clutch anymore. I love modern tech. 😂
Thanks for posting. 👍
Well done!
Been there done that many times.
Nothing like driving an old 4 speed muscle car!
His hands seemed to show nerves but he was all business when that tree came down. Great throttle control off the line.
"HOW D A R E YOU ! ! !" Gretta Thornburg. ( lol ) ☆
Love your sense of humor - IF I hear Gretta's little whiney voice in my head, I I'm going to Floor My Buick 455 for a while - !
In Philadelphia in the 60s, called flat shifting. Worked Bash speed shop 70 hours a week. 70 camaro Lt1, 514 rear, street daily, with 10inch MandH on the back, ran 10.82 128mph
And that my friends is how shes done nice job
I was pretty good at that with my Challenger. Pistol grip has great ergonomics. First time on a strip I was by myself I asked a guy to ride with me and talk me through the process of where to stage, etc. He complimented my shifting.
I had a 69 Chevelle SS. I remember shifting that way.
The Good Old Days !
Had a Jeep CJ-5 with a V-8. It had a heavy duty truck transmission, long throw top loader and use to do this like several times "every day". Unbelievable I survived those years.
Nice driving!👍
well done boss
Soweeet!! Now go check those U joints after that beating!! 😂 that was awesome!
Simple, just mash the go pedal and keep it there, just clutching between shifts. Just don't miss a shift !
In the 80s we used to file off every other tooth on the syncros in the trans. You could shift without using the clutch! Of course you had to use it when leaving the line, but not when making your 1st to second shift and so on!
Cracked the windshield of my 68 Lemans, banging 2nd gear w/no clutch, had a BW T-10.
Out of all comments I've read I was thinking about when we use to do that LOL THE GOOD OLD POOR MAN DAYS 🤣😂
This is what my friend and four speed racer from the 60's called "Flat Shifting".
Love you guys! My thoughts exactly!!
Damn Rockcrusher be like, " bout Time somebody knows how to use that stick up there"! 🤣
Now this is how you properly shift an old 4 speed and big block on the strip
I remember those "good old days". I can still see all the clutch and transmission parts flying sky high behind the car. Ronnie Sox would've called me a bum and had me banned from the drag strip.
Geezer - Regrettably after reliving my youth with a Pontiac Tempest 400 4 speed I drove extensively from 2013 to 2023 going through three different engine iterations and about 50000 hotrodding miles, I had it with 4 speeds! Noisy Throw out bearings, Pilot bushings, rubbing and bent clutch forks, hanging up linkages, just the repeated mechanical action EVERY SHIFT you can feel the wear of each acceleration run, and then the Oh Shit moments. Done with it- Buick GS455 with TH400 auto for me now...smooth and lays it down just fine, and SO MUCH more reliable not even a question if you are doing serious miles.
Power shifting, flat shifting, bang shifting, etc. No matter what you call it just put your foot down and don't let up till you run out of gears or road! We used to do this in the work truck as teenagers at our first full time job on the way home from the job site with an empty rig. I've done this in everything from Firebirds to Dodge Neons and everything inbetween. If it has a manual, it can (usually) be done. Car be damned, if you wanna make every second count this is how you drive...
Great video and nice shifting! I dread rebuilding the m22 after the thrashing takes its toll but its the cost of doing business 😂
Love that M22 whine
That's the way she's done boys, reminds me of my youth.
Hell yes! 👊🏻💪🏻
I can somehow feel and smell this exact moment. Sounded good bud…
What did she run?
Grumpy would be proud
The hydraulic clutch ruined the speed shift. I always liked the feel of the pressure plate, would drive barefoot too. 1972 455HO 4 speed Pontiac T/A and a 1990 ZR-1 corvette, there is a world of difference in the feel and the ability to never lift.
Very nice video, brings back a lot of memories, kinda sad too. 👍👍🏁🏁
Yeah, what he said. ditto on that.
What was wrong with that? I did it all the time back in the 70's. Sweet video !
Like a Boss!!!
I love the sound of a Muncie Rock Crusher!
Sure love going fast!!
And that my friends is how it's done, but it's called "power shifting".
Nice Pass!! Old school 💯
Love to power shift
That’s fun for awhile, then get your credit card out…..
Badass there.. nice looking cockpit.
I get the feeling that he's done that before.
Nice Run! Trans Gone!
Looks like you’re having an epilepsy spasm in the beginning then you got your shit together lol nice shifting
The " rock crusher" 🤣😎
Yesr they were tough 4 gear blow up a lot of cluster gear in the M21s no more after the M22 💯
Awesome shifting my man
A lot of nervous hand movement..lol
Noticed that as well.
I doubt it’s nerves, this guy is no stranger to the track. More likely eager anticipation!!
Thats the way we shifted in the 70s but we run as short a stick as possible to make it quicker fun times
That's the way my man!
Can't like this enough
No. Lift. Shift!
Awesome!
We used to call that speed shifting. A power shift was without the clutch pedal. Either way, cool vid
I wonder if a clutch less Jericho can use a vertigate shifter. That could really be fun.
Flat changing gears💪
Good stuff right there 👏 👌 👍
damn thats how i shift my dirt bike !
Nice shifting brother 👍🏻
Nicely done.
But tell me, how much coffee did you drink during the day before that run? You were fidgeting like a cat on a hog tin roof! 😅
Drive it like you stole it. Hell yeah!!!!!
Now that's the way it's supposed to be done!! I call it speed-shifting
That 2nd to 3rd shift!!!!
Yup now we have paddle shifters
Spicy!!!
Now its called rev. Matching according to my 29 year old son.
Great job on the shifting the one two shift was awesome
hell yea
Every morning driving to school, lap belt only. 😅 could have walked to school but whats the fun in that
Power shiftin
Don’t know how shifting a car can be so cool….but it is!
Sweet !!!
Holy hell what was the time/speed? Amazing!
Nice man! Englishtown? What time did you run?
Sounds on song !
👍😊 yep
It’s called power shift….. then and now, make damn sure not to miss a gear!
Crushing rocks 😃
nice shifter now i know what powershifting is
Said bye bye to that firebird. What time did you run ?
